Hey nice job!
I was skeptical about translating the ships to 3D, but they look quite faithful to the 2d versions even while pitching and yawing about Smiley

This is awesome! Smiley

I submitted it to digg!  (and kotaku and joystiq but they only report on things MS Nintendo or Sony)

4  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: UQM, Timewarp and ship rotation on: September 26, 2008, 08:22:00 am
I had my ship rotation code laying around so I did a test

http://www.viddler.com/explore/Mrbrian/videos/2/

Because of how I am layering a 50% transparent sprite over an totally opaque sprite, it still pops- but if make the two layers both 50%, the image is not totally opaque and fades in and out between each angle, which looks more weird.
The difference between the two is probably not super noticeable when in a zoomed out battle scenario
5  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Playmodes avoiding borefests, useless ships on: September 19, 2008, 10:04:21 pm

-Games with objectives.
..
-2vs2 or 3vs3 games
..

Seeing ships fight in different contexts will change people's perspectives of ship values and their abilities. It will also be more 'realistic' in the sense that you can imagine how a mega-battle between Hierarchy and Alliance forces over a piece of galactic real estate might actually pan out when it is not limited to merely sequences of 1on1 battles and instead has a diverse array of tactics from different ships used in combination. I also think that the time limit gametype could fix the "Thraddash Problem" pretty well, instead of requiring a re-valuing or ship balancing mod.
I'd be interested to see what other alternative game type suggestions others might have.

I'm interested in seeing the SC2 ships in a 16 player  Battlefield type scenario- capturing different strategic points, turning them into spawn points, etc.  Kindof like Undertow  (a underwater 2d shooter, with the point capturing).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ2ie_FkIuU

There would be some super interesting strategies there, which ships are best for defense, offense and support..
A good place to try out using the Syreen as a medic class Smiley   (get the crew from enemies and use the syreen call on yourself to drop them by teammates)

Obviously, thats probably not something that will make it into UQM but just a thought  Smiley

I've put some of my fights to internets. Quite few of them have nice moments, but none of them matches to the umgah of Elvish Pillager...

Should upload these to Viddler or maybe Youtube even Smiley
More Star Control vids!
7  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: The Ur-Quan Masters: XNA Melee on: September 08, 2008, 06:06:11 pm
It looks nice. I am wondering though, can you still see what direction the ships are facing when you're playing this on the Xbox? I bet you need HDTV, right? (Or is HDTV mandatory with an Xbox anyhow?)

Hm, on a non HDTV you probably would have trouble seeing where you face, I have been playing it all on my monitor.  But thats one advantage of using the Xbox controller, if you play with the analog stick, the ship will face where you are pressing it

9  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: UQM, Timewarp and ship rotation on: September 08, 2008, 02:02:10 am
Well..  I tried it!     Tongue

It works good, helps alot with the laser weapons.  Removing the angle limitation is just an option, you can play it both ways

Timewarp is a cool project- they did alot with it, but for me it is not enough like the original Star Control that I love Smiley

12  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: August Gimmick Tournament on: August 25, 2008, 02:13:28 am
For being my first time in a tourney, this was pretty fun
The auction part was perhaps as fun as the fighting Smiley   even though it took 2 hours

alpharesh:  A high-res video is available here (hopefully you can view .wmv):  http://cid-e4f1227696c43a98.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/UQM|_Arcade.wmv   and I'll fix that cursor  Smiley

Shiver:  Yes, I didn't show it in the video but you can target a specific ship with your weapons.  Or did you mean with the camera?  That wouldn't be too hard to do.  You can see some targetting in the previous video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW9XnbjxE9s).  Its the red ring that shows up- I'd like to change the reticle style eventually.
re Asteroids/planets:  Not right now but I can add an option menu for those sometime.
VUXDrop hasn't implemented yet, but being able to specify a target before you select a ship should be a pretty simple task.

On another note, I've made the source available at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/uqm-xnamelee.  This is still an Xbox project but considering the not so good chances of released on Xbox Community Games right now, I'd eventually like to port it to SDL/something more PC friendly.
14  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: The Ur-Quan Masters: XNA Melee on: August 11, 2008, 08:07:14 am
New video update-   This time with awkward commentary!  Tongue

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHVYSSPpBIs

Shiver: The background is still a placeholder.  It will eventually change but I haven't spent time on what it should look like yet.  I've been thinking it could be fun to have several backdrops (eg: our solar system, .. other ones / milky way?)  Of course there can always be a classic style mode
15  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Trick with Cruiser's point-defense laser on: July 19, 2008, 11:14:05 pm
This is what I think whats happening.  The plasmas that are in front of the ship do not catch the lasers that are trying to hit
the plasmas behind the kohr-ah ship because they've already been zapped, toggling their collision flag.   The lasers pass on thru to the next object that hasn't been hit, which is the ship.

Neat trick, I'll have to verify sometime that works in uqm: xna Smiley   I can actually seeing that be a viable strategy in a multi-ship scenario
