1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Intrest in a Java port? on: June 28, 2009, 12:48:05 pm
Personally, I would most like to see a version of UQM for web browsers. JavaScript or Flash would be the obvious choices for that, but a Java applet would be another option.
Flash port using Adobe Alchemy might actually be doable. People have already ported Doom and at least parts of SDL with it.

game works well, albeit the loading times are a real pain, and navigating the star map is kinda hard with no zoom
There is now a new version available. Game startup should be much faster and starmap zooming is now accessible from keys '2' and '3'.

30M of free RAM is required
I think that only new and expensive phones like n95 have that much?
Or does that mean whole free memory?
It means the free executable RAM after OS and other pre-loaded stuff has taken its share. Unfortunately a lot of the older phones, even expensive ones like first-generation N95 (not 8GB model) has relatively little amount of free RAM so UQM will not run for long on those. On my N73, there is about 15M and it is enough to start the game and play for like ten minutes until out-of-memory occurs.

It might be possible to optimize the memory usage somewhat but I haven't looked at it yet.

As for the SDL, it does not actually connect to network or anything like that, they are just capabilities which are required by the SDL port to function.
I got answer from the developer of S60 SDL and seems that the reason for this is that a library needs to have the same capabilities as an application which uses it. Currently UQM would not need those, since it is not reading or writing any data from e.g. memory card and netplay is not supported. However in the future, they would be needed for enabling addon packages and possible netplay/bluetooth support.

The message which user gets when installing is misleading and somewhat scary, but it is fault of the S60 platform security itself.

There is still mod music, i.e. the music from PC version. Only 3DO version music is missing.

As for the SDL, it does not actually connect to network or anything like that, they are just capabilities which are required by the SDL port to function. Since I did not do the SDL port, I do not know details of it. I think I'll try to check, whether it would be possible to compile SDL without those capabilities, to avoid confusion like this.

Experimental support for S60 based mobile devices was added recently to UQM SVN. To get the port more testing, I've now created a page which contains a pre-built SIS package and other information about it at http://mk.kapsi.fi/uqm-s60/.

So if there's S60 smartphone owners here, feel free to test and report how the port works.

Fonts are called SFJuggernaut and SFMoviePoster. I don't have them anymore myself so hopefully this information is enough.

Fixed. Thanks for informing.

I cleaned the mess and disabled guest posting for now.

Merged Mr.Eos posts from non-mmorpg thread to here and locked.

- Finally, I'm against the very idea of erasing past mistakes as a matter of principle. Let them stand, and let us learn by them instead, dammit.

Sorry to sound like a sour grape here, but this truly could have been handled a little better. :-/

EDIT: The Hall of Fame thread is gone too? What harm did that ever do? Shocked

The posts could have served as an example for more trolls to create havoc here, had I not removed them. Besides, the situation went way too far, locking should've been done much earlier but Meep-Eep is quite a bit more tolerant than I. But he too would have preferred of not changing the past, so I won't do it again like this. People can edit their posts too, so history is never preserved perfectly.

Hall of Fame probably went away as too-much-zanthius-infected or just accidentally, I wasn't too careful when deciding what goes and what not. I was too pissed about the situation.

Anyhow, this is why I asked your opinion about how to handle these things, so I and other moderators can do better next time.

One question: are certain individuals that caused all this banned from the forums, or are they still free to come here?

They are banned, and will be banned again if they find a way around the bans.
13  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Kohr-Ah came to a visit on: June 18, 2005, 06:23:30 pm
... and cleansed some filth, as you may notice. In addition, they disabled guest posting for now. Praise Kohr-Ah, for peace is here again, at least for a while.

You may or may not like what I just did, but in my opinion it should've been done a long time ago. I'd like to start enforcing strict policy to ban spammers and trolls without warning as soon as they start get noticeably irritating.

What do you think? Should we moderators use our powers like this to keep things in control? Other option might be to remove whole Starbase Café, if posting quality doesn't get better.

All other speech dialogue has been stutter-free, except for occasional pause after I choose a response.

The pause after choosing response happens because you use v0.2 voice .zip, which is compressed; v0.3 one is built with "don't compress" option so it's much faster for game to unpack the oggs, with almost no effect on size of zip. If you don't want to download v0.3 voices, you should repack the zip yourself without compression.

I don't remember exactly what changes we made for the voices between 0.2 and 0.3 but you probably miss some subtitle related fixes (wrong text/synchronization).

Windows executable of uqm includes openal by default, you can enable it with --sound=openal
