I was wondering how SC2 does certain things:

1. Slowing down the ship when attempting to thrust if you're already above max speed
Pretty much just adds a linear deceleration of more than your normal thrust.

It also has to do with the fact that the Chenjesu were super-technologicians (or whatever you call them) by nature. Kind of a stroke of luck. IIRC, no race before the Chenjesu had even been a challenge to the Ur-Quan. This quadrant in general - location of the Precurors' final actions (including the Mycon), all the Alliance races having been given technological help by the Chenjesu, the trans-dimensional races and the creators of the Mmrnmhrm being interested in it for some reason, etc.

Crappy turnout could be because you set it for Valentines weekend. 9 / 10 girlfriends say they will dump your ass if you ignore them and play in a tournament all afternoon at this time.

Yes.

Tip: the shield is up when the ship element's life_span is greater than NORMAL_LIFE.

I tested something with SuddenDeath on net melee. We  build our fleets and then picked our ships in the order they were on the ship list, from left to right. It was quite interesting, and I think it deserves to be a ruleset of some sort.
You could add it here.
