31  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Shofixti KYAAAAAIIIIEEEEE!!!!!! Victory? on: January 31, 2009, 01:21:34 pm
Not with a military victory, because this is a scaled down analogy of the previous example. But if you look at it at it's most basic, he is your enemy. If he wins, he has defeated you and stands victorious. If you give your life to stop him then you are victorious, having protected that which is more important than life.
No, he is not my enemy - he is just something which is likely to kill me (and this hypothetical 'wife'). Compare: a tornado suddenly appears as my wife and I are walking down the street. If it kills us both, it is not 'victorious', and if I manage to die while saving my wife, I have not somehow 'defeated' the tornado.

I'm reluctant to assign victory or defeat except when both participants have agreed (at least implicitly) on a particular contest.

Fixed that for you. Knowing what you're doing doesn't really help; it's still a pain (under Windows at least; simplifying this stuff is one of the primary reasons why Linux distributions exist!), just a more surmountable one.
Haha, windows losers Tongue

That's what the losers say. The winners either say something along "Har har we've got your womenfolk and riches you weaklings"
Not when they are all dead Tongue

More seriously, not anymore. Technology has accelerated the costs of both building and being hit by weapons far faster than the benefits of pillage.

A simpler way to do explain this might be to down the scale. You and your wife are walking down the street[...] 2) Throw yourself in front of your wife and die, but don't hurt the robber because then no one wins. He kills your wife 3 seconds later. 3) Kill the robber and die yourself, protecting your wife. Ignoring my ridiculous "just so" setup, I've been arguing that in general solution 3 can sometimes be a valid response. Because you may value some things much higher than your own life.
Yeah - 3) can be a valid response. It's just that it doesn't have anything to do with victory.

I'm with the filthy hippy. This whole thread sounds like an argument for the futility of deciding a winner in war.

I'm sure you can see my Adsense ads, right?
Not if I don't go to your website. Tongue

Am I doing something wrong?
Yeah - advertising your site to people not stupid enough to click ads.

Worry away.
37  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: NetMelee ranking system on: January 26, 2009, 01:06:14 am
Ranking systems are useful for having a way to know someone's play skill without playing them. The UQM melee community is so small that this is kind of useless. Shiver already keeps track of how good everyone is, anyway.
38  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Fan made Star Control sequel – how should it be made? on: January 20, 2009, 12:14:32 pm
I think we technically could could sell it, as long as we didn't use any of the same game content. It seems like a stupid idea though.

Hmph. I never liked football, so I just looked up the cheat codes and gave myself infinite lives and ammo.

The Mmrnmhrm tends to charge in while in Y-wing form, without changing to X-wing. A very dumb and often lethal move (sort of like what the Thraddash does).
It generally chooses its moments of transformation very poorly.
Yup, and as with most ships, when you get to know the AI, you can viciously manipulate when it transforms.
41  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Awesome Cyborg on: January 16, 2009, 02:10:03 am
Kohr-Ah attempts to charge in close when the best tactic would be to stay far away and attack from long range.
And, of course, wastes its FRIED energy.

(I have not played very much against supox, so this may be inaccurate)
Supox has no unique faults.
When you fight near the planet, it bumps into the planet fairly often because of its shoddy special usage. It's clumsy in other was too.
42  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: New Netplay Rules Proposal on: January 16, 2009, 02:05:26 am
I can confirm it too. I started up a game with myself with two instances of UQM running on the same fricken' computer, and 2 Slylandro made it desync.

Where's "All of the above"? Tongue

Actually, I'll probably be too busy with other things. Would probably help with the code a little if this thing ever got off the ground.
44  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: why don't we make it ourselves? on: January 16, 2009, 01:57:27 am
Yeah, you're right. Clearly this is a job for Death_999.
Naturally, I was implying that it was a job for me.

Nah. I would probably make the story too serious. Undecided

On the secrecy business, I'd say - who cares? The only people who are hurt by story details being spilled are the users, and if they don't want to hear, they don't have to listen.

By exacerbating the point-cost discrepancies. Cool
