The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: FOT FACE OFF - July SuperMelee Tournament

Option 1 will give you NO time to catch up on league games. Everyone will be too involved playing their 3 tournament games. Options 2 or 3 will give you the opportunity to play league games.
I meant that since other people will be busy playing tournement games (with option 1), that they will not get even further ahead of me, since I can't play today. That will give me a chance to catch up by next Saturday. In any case, if you guys play the FOT Face Off today, I'd be interested to see the results.

We might want to think about adding a rule to these tournaments that deals with games that crash, or those where the lag makes them unplayable. My personal opinion is that since you cannot place blame on anyone for the stoppage of play in a crash situation, then a mandatory restart should be enforced. The reason that I say that is because in many cases, you might be able to recreate the remaining ships at the time of the crash, but recreating the condition (crew count) of those ships is next to impossible, and that could really affect the outcome. So, to avoid any controversy/protest, a restart should be the only option.
In the case where the lag is horrible, and one player chooses to drop out, there should be no penalty assessed. Actually, I think that we may have run into this one before, and that may be the way it was handled, but it should be stated in the opening rules, so there is no confusion. Plus, it should be stated that to "qualify" for no penalty, you need to drop out with at least 100 pts of ships left (or something like that), to avoid people dropping out just to keep from taking the loss. If someone drops out, supposedly due to lag, and only has one ship left, then maybe a loss would be charged with 150 pts against.
In any case, at the very least, these situations and how best to handle them should be discussed.

LOL I'm the lowest ranking on that list! I guess I need some practice. Amiga_Nut got Don't get discouraged, Amiga_Nut! You actually played two tough games to start out. Although, practice always helps! : ) I don't think that I won a single game in my first tournament. Hey Cedric, What are the best video/audio settings for Screen VidShot? I ran a test with the defaults and I guess it used a RAW capture, which took FOREVER to process (not to mention the disk space it took up). Any tips would be appreciated. I want to get it set up for the next session.

Cedric,
Small correction. I actually beat Critta by 48 pts, not the other way around. So, my standing should read as follows....
Galactus P:2, W:2, T/A:0, L:0, F:116, A:0, Pts:4, Diff: 116
Obviously, that affects Critta's standing as well, which would be adjusted to....
Critta P:3, W:0, T/A:0, L:3, F:0, A:120, Pts:0, Diff:-120
I think that the confusion was in the fact that he reported the score as being 48-0, which suggested that he won. He should have said 0-48.
Thanks! And I'm looking forward to next Saturday!

Not sure who you included in the original headcount, but I'm usually always up for a tournament, as long as life doesn't get in the way of the schedule.
Maybe Cedric could create some sort of email distribution list for his tourneys. I missed the last one, because I forgot to check the forum. However, email is something I always remember to check. We could start building the list with those who stated interest in this post. I'm thinking that more people would respond to an email notice and as the list grows, then tournouts would be better. Also, we could email PR3 and the rest of the TFB team about them going forward, becuase they probably don't read the forums much, if at all. If they were to announce that they would be showing up to one ahead of time, I'm sure that the tournout would be huge!
Also, if Cedric, or the tourney organizer, could advertise that response was high with a follow-up email, then that might provide an incentive for more to participate on the day of the tournement.
On another note, since tournament histories are being recorded, maybe a handicapping system could be used during league play for the "Superstars" of Super Melee, so as not to discourage new players from participating. I'm just trying to think of new ways to drum up support for these things.

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Help! Competitive netplay hosting policy
|

How about an alternate host solution? If someone could set up some sort of a VPN tunnel to a viable host system, or use some sort of remote host control program, like pcAnywhere, Remote Desktop, or VNC to remotely control that viable host system for the duration of a game. That is one possible solution. Not sure how latency would affect that solution, but that's got to be better than just taking a loss, or a tie, for the game. Obviously, connecting to the closest possible viable host would be best. Until someone comes up with an interface into a game hosting server for netplay, much like GameSpy, or Battle.net, than remote host control might be the only way.

AAAHHHHHH!!!!!! I can't believe that I missed this one! My wife had a baby and that took me out of the action for a little while! Damn kids! : )
Anyway, now I'm in the same boat as PurpleBridge. I'd love to be able to catch up, especially with some time until the next play date, but not sure how. Would I be able to catch up before the next date? Is that "legal"? Does anyone in the league currently even have time to play me before the next date? If so, please let me know. I'd very much appreciate it!

Not sure if this will come out any better, but this is one idea.....
Save the results if you could. I could put a link on my website for all the tourney results going back to the begining. That is, unless they would agree to post a link of of the Ur-Quan Masters main site.

I'll play anytime!!! And I don't even want a bye!!! The more battle, the better!!! Just to get things straight, I plan on logging in at about 2 pm on Saturday, which is Mountain time (2 hours behind New York). Haven't followed all the time zone chat. Hopefully that is right. Let me know if I'm wrong. By the way, you still referenced the Pkunk Plate in the tournament timeline for the final.

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: New crazy mod

Great work EP! It's a refreshing twist on Super Melee. However, I was wondering....could you include some sort of config file with this, so players could modify some of the game elements themselves? Like when a planet is destoyed, setting it not to reappear, or being able to increase/decrease the time interval of the planet reappearing, or setting the number of planets and asteroids. Things like that...
If not, would you be able to make a very simple mod that just eliminated all of the planets, and maybe added a bunch more asteroids instead?
Actually, it would be great to see some sort of planet tracking icon (maybe something at the edge of the screen) that helped you track where the planet was when it goes off screen, or at least in which direction it was, in normal Super Melee. It's kind of annoying that you can't tell where it is until it's too late sometimes.

Yeah, I guess that I thought being logged in to the uqm-arena meant that you were intersted in some net play. So, it would follow that if anyone was there to respond, that they would be interested in playing a game. However, I will try being more direct about my interest to play, and see if that helps.
About more people being logged in there, maybe a link to the web/cgi page for that channel would help direct people there, especially those that do not use an irc client. It is a nice utility, why not advertise it a bit?
Yeah, I haven't seen the poll yet, but I will definitely cast my vote. Thanks for setting that up Meep-Eep!
Cedric: I look forward to your tournament post. However, how do you deal with the lag?

Really? Where do you live?
Yeah, I actually managed to strike up a game with edmund last night. He was nice enough to endulge me, even though he warned me of the lag beforehand (being that I'm in the States and he is in NZ). The lag wasn't horrible, but it was potentially annoying. So, I have a feeling that he didn't give it his all in the interest of ending things a bit more quickly. Definitely a good player though. That leads me to a question....
When things are laggy, do you increase the network delay at all, or do you keep it at the default (2)?
In any case, hopefully some of those people get involved in your next tourney.

Maybe we should plan on getting together on the uqm-arena sometime and setup a game. I've only been logging in there for the last few days, but there always seem to be about 10 people logged in. Problem is that few if any respond to any chat. I think that they stay logged in to sort of keep a history of any activity there, and that's about it.
In any case, let me know when you are available to play, and we can plan something. That goes for anyone else who reads this. I'm usually available and willing to play a few quick games on any given night, and I'm usually home and up late (due in part to having small children). I'm in the Mountain Time Zone, but if nothing else, I would be willing to schedule some weekend competition. Just let me know.
