1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Alternate Ur-Quan Universe on: September 18, 2007, 08:21:27 am
The mod Nicholas is working on in the other thread sounds fantastic.  I can't wait until that is done.

Quote
always wanted a random mod of SC2; randomely generated starmap, artifacts on random planets.

I find the "universe" of Ur-Quan Masters very compelling.  If there were 10 or 12 alternate universes to play, that would be great.

I liked how Starflight 2 took the wimps from Starflight 1 and made them powerful.

I could see several really good plotlines for remixing the Ur-Quan Masters data:

1.  A universe where there is no Sa-Matra and you need to beat the Kohr-Ah by destroying 1000 ships.

2. One where the Spathi are evil and mighty.

3. Some universe where the Ilwrath are the bad guys and some artifact nullifies their cloaking device.

4. Ur-Quan Masters the Prequel, stop the Ur-Quan from winning the war against the Alliance.

So many opportunities.  Perhaps in the future, project's like Nicholas 's will be finished and maybe others.  In fact, it seems difficult to imagine this not eventually happening since all of the resources are available.

But I sure wish there was a comprehensive modding guide or that type of info in the Ultronomicon wiki.

Are there any mods for UQM that have made a new map for the universe and possibly a new sequence of events or plot?

If not, there are specifications somewhere for the file names of the map data and how to create such data files.

This sounds like something interesting and fun to do, possibly with an alternate plot line.  Perhaps something similar to how Starflight 2 was very similar Starflight 1 but with role changes.

I like UQM quite a bit, and if nothing like this exists to play then I might attempt it myself in my spare time (it would not have replacement ogg files, that would be text only).

/No I'm not asking anyone to do anything for me, except find information on how the map data is stored.  The .uqm files are uncompressed zip files and I've got a general idea of how much of the data is stored.
4  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: NEWS: Toys for Bob go for a new Star Control and need your help (READ!) on: August 12, 2007, 04:07:55 am
When I was very young, I played StarFlight and loved the game to death.  As this was the time before easy information (the internet), I never had the opportunity to play StarFlight II until over a decade later (probably because I didn't know it existed).

I just finished playing the Ur-Quan Masters and I found it very refreshing in a way far beyond what StarFlight offered but with a far more character development.

I primarily stumbled upon Ur-Quan Masters as somewhat of a GPL enthusiast and have participated in more than a few GPL projects and I have to say I am doubly impressed by the media in the game.

If a new sequel does not happen for this game, it would surely be a shame.  Far too many game titles are released in modern times that are truly "me too" games and for me the Ur-Quan Masters/Star Control 2 took me back to a time when actual creativity, plot development, mystery  and forward thinking was expressed in-game rather than an emphasis on the visuals.

Although seemingly no one has a way to gauge the probability of Activision approving a new sequel of what generic minds would perceive to be the resurrection of an old game, I would certainly buy it.  Living in a "me too" world, it feels like the odds would be slim and they would rather finance another generic 3D shooter  Grin

Even if that ends up being the case, it sure would be nice to modernize the interface (mouse controls, remove command line parameters).

Either way, great work.  Playing Ur-Quan Masters was a great experience and it reminded me of a time where the concept of space was filled with wonder and imagination.  I still can't get over how cool the Melnorme trader was, the Mycons were, the music when the VUX were encountered or the comedy of the Zoq-Fot-Pik.

Sigh ... now what do I play now that I have completed this?
