Hi there. Every few years I play through the game using the walkthrough I designed and posted here now 12 years ago. (Wow!) After starting up my semi-yearly playthrough last week I started thinking about adjusting it to be more coherent with the story. Then I started thinking about how helpful a mapping utility would be to creating a "perfect" walkthrough, so I started writing one this week. To that end, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for features they'd like to see. Once finished I'll release it as freeware, along with complete source code. It's only been 2 or 3 days, but so far the map draws the stars. It works like an image viewer, where you zoom in and out with the mouse wheel and drag scroll the whole map. So far I have about a third of the constellation line connections. Here's a screenshot: Starmap Proof of ConceptAnyone have any ideas for features to add?

heh, agreed that it is not lacking. I'm skating by with my "that I found" qualifier; I don't recall seeing that before. Was it there in 2003?
My walkthru is very clearly different, and was not plagiarized from anybody. It is original to me.
I note that your walkthru includes specific worlds to mine, so props for that. I'd be interested to see how similar our mining directives are, but am too lazy to compare them.
EDIT: I wrote this back in 2003. I just last month finally upgraded from dialup to cablemodem, so I had been using uqmv0.2 all this time. I thought to search for a new version a couple days, and was thrilled with all the improvements. (Love the slideshow intro.) That prompted me to spend a couple hours on Saturday reformatting the walkthrough from Excel to vBulletin.
On a related note, the vBulletin formatting on this board is odd. I was unable to figure out how to put a blank line after a list, so that's why the missions are broken up into individual posts. (It was also surprisingly difficult to figure out how to make embedded lists.)

Okay, based on the info in the linked page, I've adjusted the Dynamo Unit / Shiva Furnace ratios in all applicable missions. Thanks again for the link.
I stand by the multiple fuel tanks. Calling the Melnorme to refuel mid-mission is tedious; the way the missions are currently designed you never have to worry about fuel at all, which is nice. For just flying around, I'm down with the concept of only carrying a single fuel tank. But when you know exactly where you are going and what you are going to do, why not just bring all the fuel you need and not worry about it?
As far as the point defense lasers, I find the Kzer-za annoying without one. I also find it gratifying to dissipate the Mycon attack with point defense lasers, though I'm not sure why when you can just shoot them. Something about watching them disperse...

Thanks for the tips (and link) everyone. Clearly the Sa-Matra battle is the thing I know the least about.
Back in '92 I never managed to finish the game. After of dozens of hours of gameplay the Ur-Quan up and killed the galaxy. I was quite annoyed and gave up.
Then a buddy burned a CD of The Ur-Quan Masters for me back in '03, and with the help of the internet I managed to win the game.
I found it so fun that I immediately sat down to craft an exhaustive walkthru, since everything I found online was IMO lacking. Even with all the info, I still found myself wandering around aimlessly looking for good spots to mine, and the order of events never seemed satisfactory to me.
This walkthru is my present to the SC2 fans; the idea is that it lets you play the entire game in as short a time as possible, so you can come back to it again and again without sinking oceans of time into it. I tend to play the entire thing from start to finish once or twice a year; the game is just that good.

Star Control 2 Complete WalkthruDesigned by Ellis DeeGeneral Notes: - "Mining" implies gathering all life forms and minerals (that meet mission minimums)
- Be sure to return lander before it gets full. (Whatever doesn't fit is lost when it fills up.)
- You cannot let your lander be destroyed.
- You can let virtually all the crew die on any missions.
- Don't forget to take crew from any acquired ships if running low mid-mission.
- Don't buy technologies or info from Melnorme unless explicitly stated; "Refuel" means max fuel.
- Recommended save games:
- Use slot 0 as "current action", where you save frequently mid-mission.
- Slots 1 through 8 should be saved at the starbase when finished with that number mission.
- Ship modules are listed in placement order; place the first module listed in the far back. (left)
- For the final mission, feel free to change your combat group around. I'm much better with Spathi than Utwig, so this walk-through is designed to keep the Spathi option open. If you have success with the Druuge against the Sa-Matra, you can sell them the Portal Spawner for 3 more ships, totalling 4, but this requires a little tinkering with mission 8. My own personal preference is 4 Pkunk, 4 Spathi, and 1 Druuge, leaving 3 slots open, but that's just me.
- This walk-through is a tribute to how much I enjoy the game; it hits all aspects of the game, even if they aren't strictly necessary in order to win it.
