1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Linux Pronunciation on: May 01, 2012, 12:51:34 pm
I pronounce it Lie-nix (close enough to the second option that I picked it).  I've been told (often) that I should pronounce it Lin-nix.   Undecided

I notice you mention a desire for cross-compatibility, but that the 3D is rendered via directx.  Any chance you're switching to opengl?
Eventually, it's pretty far down the list; after the remakes release.  I'm still using an awful library that I wrote that basically wraps the DX9 fixed function pipeline.  My intent is to refactor it out the way so that I can switch to DX9 with shaders, DX 11 (someone else is working on that renderer) or OpenGL.  Currently all the nastiness has been contained in one class which is enough for SC:R.

In other news I  had all the SC1 ships flying around and playing nicely with the (test) UI this weekend.

How is this project going? What is PnF?
It's still going and it's completion is anywhere from nearly done to some-time-in-the-next-millennium depending what my next wild tangent is.   Of course it doesn't help that I've been distracted by *that* project.

Indeed, the correct link should be http://www.mediafire.com/?naz99fd7khlycu1
Unfortunately I don't have speakers so...  Undecided

And if some company offered you double what you're being paid now for the same job? Would you consider that a better job opportunity?
PS: In euro's your salary is about as much as an average supermarked employee makes over here... No wait, it's even less than minimum wage.. wtf? Ofcourse Intel isn't going to go bankrupt on paying such salaries
On the other hand that's eight and a half times higher than minimum salary here and one could live pretty well; so it's all relative.

I strongly disagree! I do not know nor care who you think you are, but I am no drop of water!
Err, then what are you? What is your significance in the world, or even in the country you're living in?
I think you may have inadvertently made Angelfish's point for him.  You might strongly disagree that you're unimportant but teh goverments, it doesn't give a flying wombats fart what you think.
6  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: SC2 original PC version on: November 08, 2010, 01:31:23 pm
Any reason it cant be run through a Decompiler?
The short answer is because a generic C decompiler doesn't exist.  The longer answer is that one would have to take the existing machine code possibly convert it to assembly instructions and then convert it to C.  Unless you have debug information for that executable the best a decompiler can do is give you C-that-looks-like-assembly.  If the executable was hit by any sort of optimising compiler then any of the original program structure will have been lost and the decompiled code would be an unreadable mess.  It's not a solvable problem.

I use DOSbox to run it. It's really cool. sound quality sucks but nevertheless.
I happened to have been playing SC2 in DOSBox (0.73) last night and the sound was fine.  Try turning up the CPU cycles, that might help.  Beyond that I have no suggestions.
7  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Linux build crashes. on: November 08, 2010, 12:46:07 pm
I was going to suggest uninstalling Pulseaudio (which is still not quite there yet) and re-installing ALSA in it's place but if you use aptitude/synaptic it'll take out the gnome-desktop too (which is bad).  Practically I have nothing valuable to add.   Cry
8  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Ur-Quan Masters HD Mod on: November 03, 2010, 10:33:24 am
Dragon has made some pretty models for the SC1 ships, and about half of the SC2 ships as well, although I still haven't managed to get the SC2 models up.
I've now rendered then out as well, if you head over to this thread at the SCDB you can find the full details there.

Or you can just grab the file here.  Renders are 512x512 and each ship has 72 frames of rotation.  eg:

In regards to the HD work, i'm not quite sure if these look better than the models already created for Timewarp.
Quite often mine don't look better (see Mycon Podship in particular) however the problem with the Timewarp images (or maybe it would be better say the decision taken at the time) is that they're really, really small.  About 50 pixels across vs 500 so on modern screens running HD they can't be zoomed in for close combat without looking pixellated.

I've answered Angelfishes comment here and at the SCDB because there've been a couple of comments about using Timewarps sprites in the HD project and my opinion is that I don't think they'll work unless they're re-rendered at larger resolutions.

One day, hopefully, there will be FreeOrion.  Last time I tried it the tech tree was pretty unbalanced so play it at your own risk.

It's not a 4x but there's also Homeworld 2 Complex - a mod for Homeworld 2.  As of fairly recently someone is camping on the homepage so you'll need to do a bit of googling.
10  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Star Maps for Star Control I and II on: July 27, 2010, 11:41:47 am
I thought the whole point behind "abandonware" is that they don't care anymore about trying to sell/maintain it?
Unfortunately "abandonware" isn't a legal term.  A game can be officially 'abandoned' if the copyright holder puts it in the public domain but that very seldom happens.  More often the copyright holder ceases to pursue copyright infringements on old software that has no commercial interest.  Occasionally it's uncertain who the copyright holder actually is - as companies are bought and sold then who actually holds the copyright can become confused.

Also with regards to SC1 and it's star maps.  Unfortunately TfB no longer have the original source code to SC1 which includes the rather nifty random star position and link generator.  I took a stab at reverse engineering it a couple of years ago but didn't try very hard.  Zeracles has since provided an algorithm that generates SC1 style starmaps, complete with connections and clusters (Yay!).  As Alvarin said it'd be very hard to print the 3D representation and each map is only be valid for one scenario (and the games are fairly short).

You could take a look at Cymon's Games.  It's run by guesst (now cymon) who still lurks in these forums.  He's probably one of the best people here to weigh in on this topic.

For my part I'd suggest starting small before jumping into the UQM code.  It's possible to do some very strange and confusing things in C/C++ that could leave you scratching for a good while before working out why they work.

Zum Glück sprechen wir Englisch an der SCDB. Nichts für ungut an die schwedische.

Yes alright, I haven't had to try to write in German in about 8 years.  It's bad.
