31  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Programming Language on: November 13, 2008, 05:18:30 am
Take the opportunity to learn tho! Around here knowledge is fair enough to allow you to understand new things...either about programming, sound effects, graphics ..yada yada... If you decide to do something and you got question...Everybody around here will try to help you. Here let me ask you...In computer, what is your best field, the one that you feel quite confident about it. For me, it is all that is related to sound, manipulation, recording, modification etc... What about you?

For ME (don't know if you are talking to me or not), it is Microsoft programs (how to use them, etc.), and Paint-related things.

Of course I've moved on from space games to RTS games and freeciv mostly, but when I played UQM more, I liked the Androsynth, mostly because of their amazing technological insight.
I completely agree. Not the "moved on" part, but the "technology insight" part.
33  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Ideas for more alien races on: November 13, 2008, 05:14:57 am
A race i would add you be one (that i made up) that is an off through of the Mycon. They are total reverse of what they Mycon are. They are still Mushroom/spore like creatures though. There ship is called the SNOWBALL (which looks like the Mycons except the black is in the spots that arn't covered with a spot of, blue in this case. Also the plasmoid that is the primary weapon is red and instead of regenerating crew, they can become invonerable if you have the battery) and the race's name is HAICOZ (They look pretty much similar to the Mycon only they act as if they think the opposite of Juffowub). They would fit into the story line by, if you don't lead them into the Syreen Trap, they (after 3 months Talana said her ships were ready) would slowly creep up to the Mycon area of influence and right when they would touch, they would start fighting eachother. The fight (as they would slowly go into each other's Sphere of Influence) would last 1 year, and the conclusion would be both races destroyed completely. You could obviously talk to them if you got into the sphere of influence they own. All they would say is something like "WE ARE TO BUSY TO COMMUNICATE. LEAVE NOW, OR FOREVER PRAY YOU DO NOT GET KILLED BY OUR BROTHERS!" and they would leave the conversation, with you just coming back where you were in hyperspace/truespace. There homeworld is Organon 3 and that is where you would be able to talk with them in a complete conversation.

i know, the first time i played SC2 was when i was like 6 or 5 (a few years after it came out). I was also wondering what heppened to them, but then i was just like: "you know what? WHO CARES! They are AWESOME enough to not matter what happen to them!". I wish they would make another SC (a real one by the actual makers) with the Androsynth just APPEARing out of no where.

Wait a moment. The tongue goes out instantly, and only takes time to withdraw? I didn't realize that. I thought the hard part was estimating its delay. And in the end, I guess the correct delay of 0 was hard for me to estimate.
i thought i saw the tounge go out (like it took time) the last time i played as a ZFP, and it took even longer to come back. DOes very little damage though (which sucks).

you never know what happens since the creators barley said anything about anything! Undecided Undecided Undecided Undecided Undecided

UQM is making you want to be a programmer when you grow up?  Grin

Um... A little hard to understand...

If you mean to ask "do I want to be a programmer and remake UQM", then partially yes. I do want to make games (and have started my novice career using Game Maker to make free games), but I do not intend to do anything with UQM anytime soon.

What I DO intend to make would be platformers (like the one I'm making now!), RTS games, and possibly one space game. But I will in no way try to remake UQM. That would be totally unoriginal, and no fun at all.

However, maybe sometime I'll tweak the story a little bit for a small mod.
I would really like to be able to make a game like SC2, but i just know deep down in my heart that i just won't be able to do it. I mean i could make a game LIKE Ur-Quan Masters, but i couldn't EVER make an exact copy. EVER!

Interesting point this brings up: Does the tongue actually take damage?

No.

Fun fact: The tongue is also only present as a damage dealer for the exact frame (1/24th of a second) you press the button. It's quite possible to touch an enemy ship or projectile with the tongue afterward as it withdraws back into the ship, but you will inflict no damage. This makes the weapon a pain in the ass to use, which is likely intentional.
I can imagine why it is a pain in the ass because the Zoq Fot Pik are a Pain in the Ass alien race.
40  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Androsynth Reproduction on: November 09, 2008, 07:09:05 am
The Androsynth can just clone themselves (like someone said before) so they don't have to get messy.
41  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: AI ship wiggle in gravity well on: November 09, 2008, 06:47:20 am
This is against the computer, right?
I suspect they just want to steer towards a direction just around where the threshold between two images is. And as there are only 64 discrete directions, steering in a specific direction in between two of those requires continuous adjustment.
If this happens more often for some ships than others, that may be because of their specific mass, thrust, and max speeds, which require more intervention to get to where they want to go in a gravity well.
I think I've seen the behavior outside of gravity wells too, when running away with the computer chasing from a specific angle.

I agree, this happened to me when i was fighting a supox, i was an arilou and i kept on teleporting around it and the supox ship like, freaked out.

I can't figure out why it won't let me in the petition...  Angry Angry Angry

EDIT: Never mind, I got it! I said "PLEASE LET TOYS FOR BOB MAKE ANOTHER GAME!!!!!!" Not completely like that, but you get the general idea.

I think my dad can program in "C" but i don't know for sure, it would be interesting to make a game like Star Control 2.

i'm not completely sure if you are joking or not.  Tongue
45  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Androsynth on: November 09, 2008, 06:25:57 am
Hey everyone, I am somewhat new to the board, but i play A LOT of Ur-Quan Masters. I have a question though, who here ACTUALLY likes the Androsynth? I mean i do, but i wasn't sure if anyone else did. I don't really care what happened to them, i like the Orz and Arilou, but i am just curious if anyone else likes the Androsynth since you don't see them at all is SC2.
