1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: installer crashing in winxp on: March 19, 2003, 12:16:35 am
Uqm should most definitely NOT delete the .exe  I have no idea what would cause that.
However, if yu manually download the .zips, you should be able to get the installer to use the local versions.  If that STILL doesn't work, perhaps you can just install the core, and manually unzip all the .zips into the 'content' dir.

2  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Memory leak? on: March 10, 2003, 08:53:20 pm
There was a pretty severe memory leak in 0.2 (leaked 3.5MB everytime you enterered planetary orbit).  This has been fixed in CVS.  There are likely lots of other leaks, and the memory usage in uqm generates lots of fragments that are hard for the OS to reclaim.  So this problem still fundamentall exists, though one of the more egregious offenders has been fixed.

I'm running an XP machine and I'm getting the kernal failed to load error.  I have a 1 gHz Duron with Geforce 3 and 512 MB of RAM.  Any ideas fixing this problem?  Thanks.

this is most likely an installation problem.
Did you try to upgrade from 0.1 or did you do a fresh install.
if you did an upgrade, you should rerun the installer, and make sure to choose 'Upgrade' from the drop-down menu (instead of Full Install') and rerun the installer.

If you did a full install, please cut and paste the entire message that appears on th screen.

I've got the source compiling now (updating from CVS as we speak).  I'll have to have a browse and see how big a job it is to convert it over to PhysFS.  Since the PhysFS stuff is similar to the stdio functions, it shouldn't be a major problem... just time consuming.

Feel free to do this.  Feel free to submit teh patch in bugzilla.  Please DO NOT release those binaries to others.  This has all been done by others before.  We (well Meep-Eep) have a specific goal for the resource management, and know how to do it.  It will eventually happen, but please do not rush things.

Any tuxers have this prob? I did a selfie compile, have a /comm/location of ogg dir and also get no voices.

_GetMusicData(): loading lbm/starbase.mod
   decoder: MikMod, rate 44100 format 170202
       'comandr.con' -- 223 bytes
       'lbm/player.fon' -- 1 bytes
       'comm/comandr/comandr.ani' -- 2731 bytes
       'comm/comandr/comandr.fon' -- 1 bytes
       'comm/comandr/comandr.ct' -- 292 bytes
       'comm/comandr/comandr.mod' -- 67076 bytes
_GetMusicData(): loading comm/comandr/comandr.mod
   decoder: MikMod, rate 44100 format 170202
       'comm/starbas/starbas.txt' -- 61508 bytes
Found timestamp file: comm/starbas/starbas.ts
SpliceTrack(): loading comm/starbas/starb011.ogg
StreamDecoderTaskFunc(): finished playing comm/starbas/starb011.ogg, source 6

This isn't actually enough information.  I need to see something more like:

SpliceTrack(): loading comm/starbas/starb128.ogg
SoundDecoder_Decode(): eof for comm/starbas/starb126.ogg
Switching to stream comm/starbas/starb129.ogg at pos 0
SoundDecoder_Decode(): eof for comm/starbas/starb129.ogg
Switching to stream comm/starbas/starb129.ogg at pos 32347

(play a track with multiple pages of text output)

Otherwise, i can't help you much.
6  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: help with gamepad on: March 07, 2003, 08:09:55 pm
There is no difference between the '-' on the keypad and the '-' on the main keyboard.  If you don't believe me, bring up the file in a hex editor (and then prove me wrong)

The most likely cause is due to CR/LF issues.  Also, having space at the end of the line may or may not cause problems.

I can add some debugging code to uqm to help resolve this, but you'll need the ability to compile from CVS.  If someone with one of these hosed pads is willing to do this, let me know, and I'll walk you through what needs to be done to test it.
7  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Game crashes during battles on: March 07, 2003, 08:03:16 pm
This is now fixed in the latest CVS build.

Perhaps Striker or some other kind soul will begin building development builds again soon.

We have at at least one testcase that  shows a similar behaviour, that we are working on (but no solution yet).  I'm not sure if it will redmedy your instant  crash on using special ability.
9  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Sdl.dll not found on: March 01, 2003, 06:10:20 pm
It should have been installed by the installer, and e located in the "The UrQuan Masters" directory.
If it is not there, your install did not go through successfully.  You can try rerunning the installer, and only selecting "Graphics/Sound libs"  This will reinstall the libraries without downloading any files.

If the files are there already, and clicking on uqm in that  directory still doesn't work, then you must have a conflicting  version of SDL somewhere on your system.  Run a find for"SDL.dll" and see what turns up
10  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: help with gamepad on: March 01, 2003, 06:06:33 pm
It sounds like the correct settings for your pad are:

<Joyport0-threshold0>
"left" <Joy-A0+>
"right" <Joy-A1->
"up" <Joy-A1+>
"down" <Joy-B0>
"Enter" <Joy-B1>
" " <Joy-B2>
"Rctrl" <Joy-C0>
"Esc"
"LShift"
"RShift"

I don't really know how to make buttons 2 and 3 work(I just threw in some guesses), But I'd just try using different values for B and C (i.e. B2, B3, C1, C2, etc)

your gamepad behaves very strangely btw.  the axis are defined plain wrong.  I expect  this is a problem with SDL not liking your gamepad, but whatever the reason, we should be able to find controls that will work.

Let us knnow how it turns out.
11  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Problems with starting and also with keys. on: March 01, 2003, 05:55:19 pm
Thanks, this may be of use.  I need to study  the code some more, and the grafx gurus may need to get involved, and we may still need more info, but this is a start.
12  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: still missing weapons fire on: March 01, 2003, 05:53:03 pm
The first problem (gun-shots and UrQuan fighters disappear in melee) is a known bug, and is being  actiively  worked on.

I have not  had problems with the comm with those two races, even on m 366MHz machine.  Are you gettingDCQ Overload messages in the textbox message window?
13  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Kernel failed to load! on: March 01, 2003, 05:50:20 pm
See this thread:
http://uqm.stack.nl/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Techissues;action=display;num=1046359147

Unfortunately, we do not  yet  know what  is wrong.  But we are workinng  on it.
14  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: crash before combat on: March 01, 2003, 12:53:29 am
they should be in a directory like:
C:\Documents and Setting\Username\Application Data\uqm\save\
the save numbers are 1 less than what you see in the load screen (so game '10' is starcon2.09)
15  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Problems with starting and also with keys. on: March 01, 2003, 12:50:35 am
I'm still not sure what is wrong.
can you try doing:
gdb uqm-debug -n "/usr/lib/games/uqm/content"

(note that you may need a space between '-n' and the dir  (I'm not really sure tho)

you can then type 'run'
when it dies, you can type 'bt' and paste the entire log here.

That should help us determine what is wrong.
