The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: PNF news flash: StarCon video released.

Although I remember looking at a few screenshots at the time, this is the first time I've ever seen gameplay video. Having said that, I'm really glad this game wasn't made. I think this would have made SC3 looked like an all time great. I remember reading that they were going for a Colony Wars type game, but this looks a lot worse then anything I ever saw out of that franchise. Granted, this is basically beta footage, but I'm happy the Star Control franchise never officially went down this path.

The Commander makes a number of announcements throughout the game, most of which are fairly important. I don't think the game has any sort of log feature that maintains a list of past conversations. So you're pretty much on your own to keep track of these things. Now given the stage of the game you're at, based on your description, I don't think this particular piece of information Hayes is giving you is critical. No, this probably falls into the "nice to know", but not terribly important category. So you can probably get away with this one without crippling your game. Next time, however, write it down! Or you may not be so lucky!

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: A question about annoyance

I found myself truly curious as to whether I am also someone people find irritating and such.
Nah, not at all. Admittedly I don't read every post or thread in here, but I've never seen anything inflammatory or obnoxious from you. I really doubt you have anything to worry about. For me personally, very few things really get on my nerves when it comes to message boards and such. Spammers and shills are probably the most annoying to me.

Mycon are definitely asexual, but at one point the offer to implant a spore sack in the captain's brain. Would this count as a hybrid? Presumably, a human with Mycon DNA swimming around in its head would behave quite a bit differently then other humans.
I think it's fair to say if the Mycon can do this with humans, they can also probably do it with other similar species (Syreen, Shofixti, etc).

I think the way the game was written gave stars and constellations arbitrary locations, but I definitely don't think the names of the stars were arbitrary (Betelgeuse, Sirius, Vega, Rigel). I don't know whether all the stars mentioned in the game are in our local sector of the galaxy, but at first glance every star and constellation corresponds to a true Milky Way name.
The names might be the same, but according to the original paper hyperspace map, the constellations were first mapped by the Chenjesu. Due to the fact that the Chenjesu names were unpronounceable, traditional astrological names were randomly assigned by the UN.

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: How does the New Alliance win the war?

My guess is that the Alliance victory was heavily contingent on the Ur-Quan and Kohr-Ah fleets being thrown into chaos after the Sa-Matra's destruction. Perhaps several high ranking officials (ie Lord 1 & and the Primat) were killed in the explosion. They also probably blamed each other and began to fight a total war, as opposed to a war within a predefined set of rules. The resulting destruction gave the Alliance the opening they needed to topple their empire.
Just a guess though.
