1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Running SC1, 2, or 3 under XP? on: February 09, 2003, 08:01:07 pm
Here's how I used DOSBox 0.57 to run SC2 absolutely flawlessly under XP:

-Start up dosbox and at the Z: prompt type "CONFIG -WRITECONF DOSBOX.CONF" (without the quotes). Close DOSBox.
You should now how a file called "DOSBOX.CONF" in the dosbox directory, which can be "opened with" notepad or any text editor. Save a copy called "SC2.CONF".
-Create a subfolder in dosbox dir, called "CONF", and move "SC2.CONF" into there.
-IMPORTANT: In SC2.CONF, Change the option "keepsmall=false" to "keepsmall=true". This is what screws up the sound and makes it echo.
-Change cycles=1800 to cycles=4000
-In SC2.CONF, the bottom of the file should look like:

---cut (do not copy this line)---

[autoexec]
# Add here the lines you want to execute on startup.
mount c "(full directory path of SC2)"
c:
starcon2 -g:bios -s:sblaster

---end cut---

-If the directory that SC2 is in has long filenames or spaces, DO enclose it in quotes. Also note the directory path does not contain the executable file name.

-Create a file called "SC2.BAT" in the "CONF" directory you made, and edit it to contain:

--cut--

..\dosbox -conf SC2.conf

--end cut--

-Now you should be able to double-click "SC2.BAT" to run SC2 just like it used to.
-You can use "alt + enter" to go fullscreen.
-Try doing the same for other games that weren't working right before, it helps them too.
Anyway, good luck!

3  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Arilou and the Orz: What's the Deal? *spoilers on: February 06, 2003, 08:30:29 am
Just some observations:
If we in 3 dim. view the "unfolding" of 4 dim, like a series of projections, or 'time', then any n-level being should see time as the "unfolding" of n+1 dim., with similar uncertainties. (I guess.) If appears that to us, in 3 are unable to separate duality(n-1) from our thought, or communication. So I think, maybe Orz can only reduce it's thought or comm. to (n-1) too.
I think this corelates with some of the further above.
For those who read flatland, seeing a dim. below is not, in fact, like seeing it's 'future/past/present' but more like seeing it's inside and outside at the same time. If each lower dim. is projected from the one 'outside' of it, then time is an illusion from which no being escapes. The translator is 'translating consciousness. ' from our point of view(as someone mentioned).
I think many of the theories above are fascinating and I apologize if I repeated someone's ideas.

I have no idea if it means anything, but I did think about it the "mashing on the keyboard" thing. If it isn't, than why not a real word? This is, at least, the most confusing job the translator's had. The Orz are damned fascinating..

Sorry, but a pattern made by *fingers*.

Hey, look at how "**HYUIVBHJHG**" is entered on a key board. The letters are adjacent, and seem to make a pattern.

Thanks Chad, that would be an honor.

Hi again. I made a new (version 2) save game editor.
You can change R.U., fuel, crew, landers, main ship modules,(weapons, fuel tanks, etc.), thrusters, and turning jets.
It's got a better interface and works well.
Be glad to share it, anyway.

It's nothing fancy, it reads a POKE.DAT file, which can be added to or modifed to add more cheats. I added R.U., Crew(flagship) , and fuel. It's a small MFC windows dialog, and works well enough as long as the user enters sensible values,(i.e. don't give yourself more crew than you can hold, etc.). It's ~14 kb zipped, be glad to send it.
