The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Bugs to report
|

The link in the "DO NOT REPORT BUGS HERE ANYMORE" topic is broken. I couldn't find a place to do it.
And that stupid fuel gauge is STILL broken in 0.7. Shows short range with over 300 fuel.
Why make things so difficult?

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Swarming is broken

In my game I contacted Arilou., and then picked a random warp point. It dumped me across the map. So, I realized it was a mistake, and began going back to the left side of the map, visiting various systems. I knew the Ur-Quan were in there, but I figured I could run from anything I couldn't handle. Nnnnope!
I let someone catch me, in the middle of searching random star systems, and it was one of those two. You know how this works. It really didn't matter at that point if I fought well, if the Ur-Quan asked me to leave the area, or even if I had the portal device, because from that point on the game was softlocked into encounter after encounter. If you have 7 guys waiting, and more spawn faster than you can kill them or run, the game is over. Just continuing at that point is wrong; wrong for the game to imply you can continue and wrong for the player to hope he can succeed. GAME OVER.
I did kill quite a few and ran from many more, but it doesn't matter. Autopilot was already on before the first encounter. Game won't even let me transfer crew to the ship, let alone use devices or open the map. GAME OVER.
So, in terms of addressing this, I think it should be possible when being swarmed, if you manage to escape several attacks, you should have the privilege of retreat from a situation you cannot prevail in. Pretty much that "invincibility frames" type mechanic where, if you flee from a ship in a system, you have the ability to flee. It doesn't even make sense that you "escaped" from a battle, but didn't because you never moved from the point of danger.
I read the interpretation of some that "you shouldn't go over there, it's supposed to be dangerous" and I get that, but not only can you do this easily if you just deliberately avoid encounters/swarms, but that's not the point. Of course the area is dangerous. All Thrall areas are theoretically. The point is that the game is giving you tools to retreat and salvage a mistake, and those tools are a farce and nonfunctional when there's a swarm, and that is wrong.
At the very least you should be able to make progress on retreat if you are successfully killing or fleeing in battle, I am not supporting impunity in doctrinal space.

I've never run into the time limit myself, possibly because I tend to assume I am working against a time limit, rather than assume I have all the time in the world. This got a bit silly on my first play-through of Mass Effect, which turned out to be very brief (and unnecessarily hard) since I was saving pretty much all the side quests for when the immediate threat to the galaxy was taken care of. I was quite surprised when the game ended.
This is why you're defending it. I spent days trying to figure it out, investigating every scrap of information I could find, buying every tip from the Melnorme, landing on random worlds in vain hope...how is that not Evil?

Under the revised Zarf's Cruelty Scale of Interactive Fiction, UQM is firmly in the "Tough" camp; there are lots of ways to end up in a situation you can't get out of, but most of them involve entering deep into enemy territory without being prepared. SC3 descends into "Nasty"; saying the wrong thing to an alien can get you fired, ending the game! This is probably one of the reasons why SC3 is considered evil. All those save slots are there for a reason, people. That's a pretty cool site. As far as UQM is concerned, it's...Evil. Think - you have to visit various far flung worlds in a certain order, some of which aren't actually necessary and waste your time (it could add to the game, but that's useless if you have to start all over again to do it), and there's no indication that you've passed a point of no return. It's Evil and I struggle to think such a great game can be so evil. Can you tell I hate the time limit? Cruel at best, but really, since you have to invest in the game so many hours just to find out you're screwed, Evil.

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Thraddash vs. Pkunk = futile
|
on: April 15, 2010, 08:55:56 am

Here is what happened tonight.
I decided I would kill a fleet with the Thraddash. One ship. Unfortunately, that's not as easy as the experts say -
my first opponent was the Pkunk (The Peeled Eyes). I could not hit the guy no matter what I did. Once the Pkunk blundered into fire after the gravity whip, but that only slightly damaged the Pkunk, and every time I tried to get close enough to burn him, he hurt me.
Conclusion: Thraddash vs. Awesome Pkunk = pointless.
Awesome Pkunk is a really irritating opponent, but most ships have some sort of area or guided attack to deal with them.
FYI, I know that it can be done, any fool can do the gravity whip trick enough times in an hour, but then the Pkunk likely get ANOTHER ship! Yeesh.

I already sent the Mycon to Organon. I already gathered um, egg sac or whatever it is called in an effort to trade it for other Druuge items (Greenish later helpfully informed me only the sphere is helpful). I don't think I've found the Chenjesu. I started the civil war, and I don't see how that helps me win (unless it takes some time). I also turned the Pkunk away repeatedly, although I don't see how that specifically helps me either.
Unless I'm supposed to be wrapping the device in an egg sac to make it a weapon, which doesn't work, I don't understand.
I am getting good with Super-melee whilst this goes on, I can't play tomorrow though.
