Nah, he probably means the Ur Quan Dreadnought.

Hm, you're right about the Spathi being powerful though, although a little goading can make them easy prey.
2  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Your LEAST favorite ship on: January 08, 2003, 03:45:14 pm
I hate the Earthling Cruiser. Their lack of maneuverability and low speed, coupled with a very WIDE side profile and a glaring blind spot in their firing arc makes them easy prey for almost everything in the game.

*off topic*

Conversely, I love the Umgah Drone and Illwrath Avenger.

The Umgah Drone is, to me, the ultimate Chmmr Killer. Simply hold down the primary weapon, spray his zapsats, use the Zip motion to escape his tractor beam. After that, simply keep the antimatter cone up to block his laser and fry him.

And the Illwrath is a hoot for HyperMelee. I've learned how to located my own ship a long time ago, so whenever I play the Avenger, I can keep my friend on his toes by playing mindgames.

But I HATED the ships from SC3. A lot of them lacked creativity. I mean, yeah, there were the really interesting ones, but most of them were rehashed versions of SC2 ships. Maybe it's difficult to come up with unique ideas, I agree, but still... But the Exquivian ship was my fav in SC3. ;p

But although SC3 had the worst interface, it had the most interesting game idea. I love the idea of colonies and shipbuilding like that. And sending 'diplomatic' vessels out is a great plus.
3  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Chmmr Reproduction on: January 08, 2003, 03:34:43 pm
Wouldn't it be possible for these scenarios:

1) The Chenjesu and Mmrnmrhrm (sp?) analyzed their own build, and the Chenjesu, after some research, discovered that it was possible to replicate the Mmrnmrhrm parts provided that it was altered slightly and bonded with a Chenjesu, thus bringing about a Chmmr?

2) Metal is crystalline in structure. That is, it has a structure similar to that of crystals and resembles a crystal formation at high magnification. It is totally possible that given enough raw materials/'nutrition', a completely new Chmmr can be synthesised from parts of a Chenjesu and Mmrnmrhrm. Of course the sentience may require some 'parent' circuits from the Mmrnmrhrm's part, but it is totally feasible. So while the 'first' generation Chmmr (and possibly second) are still seperatable hybrids, future generations may become inextricably bonded.

Just some ideas.

My Utwigs used to be able to wipe out just about everything that came at them. So Utwigs it is.

S-weet! Grin

The term you are trying to describe sounds like the Leyland Gravity Whip. It is possible to get the Earthling cruiser to go so 'fast' while whipping that it can run over its OWN missiles. Try it. You can also shoot down your OWN missiles with the PDS if you're moving faster than usual.

Again, solution to this problem is the same as the Mycon: Fire backwards.

<<Earthling: 11 !
Pkunk: 20 !
Syreen: 13 !
Vux: 12 !

Ships marked with an exclamation mark (!) are suprising low or high to me. >>

I agree... the earthling cruiser should get an 8 or something. Tongue They are really useless... they get chewed up by almost everything else. Even the Arilou has some strengths going for it.

Pkunk : These are powerful guys. Don't underestimate their staying power. They can go toe to toe with an Ur Quan and win. Also, their 'resurrection' ability is a big plus. I had one resurrect over 10 times in a single battle. 20 is a great compromise for staying power and superior speed/turning over a slightly-weak offensive ability.

Syreen : Actually a quite alright score. Their attack does 2 pts damage and is decently long ranged. Their siren call can either strengthen the Syreen and/or weaken the enemy substantially. It is actually almost more dangerous than an Ur Quan under the right conditions. The no. of crew jumping is dependent on no. of crew present on the enemy ship.

(Like a planet: You will get 6 pts damage for around 30 or so, then it will drop to 4, 2, and finally 1.)

VUX : Hm.... hard to say. Their Limpet attack is a really lousy compensation for their crappy maneuveuring abilities. The laser is quite nasty, but eats batteries too fast to be useful against fast fliers, even if they have one or two limpets on them.

Well, my $0.02's worth.
8  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Tips for all newbies on: January 06, 2003, 06:09:07 pm
Been playing the game since I got my first 286. I'm sorry if my memory is foggy, but in my own experience, the hints have gotten me very far very fast.

I'm also speaking from the PC experience.

Hm, you're right though, the scale is only from 1-8. Sorry.

But as for 1 having NO earthquakes, you're wrong. For weather, you're right about 1 having no lightning. But as for tectonics, even a 1 will result in minimal earthquakes. They are VERY rare and because they are scattered around the planet, you may never encounter one.

I didn't mention anything about Gravity. But good point there.

I mentioned medium sized red worlds are very valuable. Small red worlds are rarely, if ever, radioactive worlds. These have such small yields I normally discard them as a waste of resources. Mostly, you get Dust worlds, Carbide worlds, Infrared worlds, Crimson worlds, or other similarly worthless planet.

Purple and Violet are the same thing. Violet is the graphic designer's/artist's term for Purple. I've never encountered many valuable small purple worlds, although they still contain rare minerals, again, small yields are not worth it.

Hm, the Dill-Rats are not critical to finishing the game... I DID get the Aqua Helix without trouble, once your mothership is fully upgraded. But I agree that they make your life much easier. Still....

Scott: Thanks for clearing that up.

The Umgah can be found in the general area around the Orion system. You can buy the information of where the talking pet is off the Melnorme, I think. Again, fuzzy memory.

Well, cheers.

hm...? Sorry then... hehe. Was it Corvi? Been a while. Please correct me.
10  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Good Captain / Ship Names on: January 05, 2003, 03:42:33 pm
No particular captain's name, but my ship is always called the 'Precursor'. Tongue
11  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Just an artistic issue on: January 04, 2003, 06:56:00 pm
I agree... the PC's menu interface was the easiest to use. I also miss the easily identifiable planet statistics (the icons are a little hard to decipher), but the zoom feature is a great boon.

Well, I eagerly anticipate 1.0...
12  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Fastest Ship in SC2? on: January 04, 2003, 03:28:41 pm
Well..... we were both stunned, at first, and besides, if my friend was so kind as to wait for me to stop flying across the screen at warp speeds, who am I to betray that consideration? Wink
13  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Tips for all newbies on: January 04, 2003, 03:27:31 pm
*Chuckles*

Well, that PDS one was for fun. Imagine what it would be like to take on 3,000,000 Ur-Quan Dreadnoughts and not lose a single crew because you could intercept all their shots, then disgrace them by killing them at point blank.

But that aside, the tips are for those who don't have time to figure out everything at one go...  I should know... (grumbles)

Ah, so the ZFP have THAT use eh? I never took that long to finish a game, except on my first try (when the game ended in another less pleasant way.   :-/ ) Thanks...
14  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Tips for all newbies on: January 04, 2003, 11:28:48 am
Oh, a note for people who want to play with point defense systems in their game: Every PDS you add to your ship increases the damage the PDS can do by one point.

If I remember correctly, an Ur-Quan fusion blast does 6 pts of damage. Using six PDSes, you can cancel out the shot in one go. Try using that as a weapon.
15  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Fastest Ship in SC2? on: January 04, 2003, 11:25:07 am
I remember the time I played a Hypermelee back on my 486.... can't remember which ship it was, but I got stuck in an asteroid. I mean, I could NOT turn. Move. Nothing. This went on for a few seconds.

Suddenly, *BANG*! My ship was sent flying in one direction and the asteroid another. To give you an idea of how FAST I was moving, I wrapped around the screen once every second. Every asteroid I hit simply bounced off and BARELY scratched my speed. I only managed to stop because I kept thrusting in the opposite direction for about 20 seconds. My friend was kind enough to wait for me to stop flying.
