playing with voice acting on is a crime against sc2. never ever do it. the graphics, text, the talking style in dialogue gives more character than a hired voice mimicking actor can give, to the aliens.

I disagree. While the voices admittedly have their flaws, they are not this all-corrupting entity that you and some other people make them out to be. Can you listen to them and honestly tell me that the Ilwrath and Thraddash voices are not simply magnificent? Also, you should listen some time as Fwiffo discusses the "Ultimate Evil". The voice acting nailed that line at least, don't you think?

(Actually, due to the breathing noises in the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za voice acting I was initially under the impression they had abnormally small lungs, thus causing them difficulty while speaking, but that is another story)

actually i say they are that all-corrupting entity that we make it to be.

it is only evident during long sessions. if you play with sound off, (preferably with pc version), over the long hours you will see that your subconscious starts to draw pictures of the characteristics of the aliens, from what they say, their history, and their responses.

in long term, this is much more a vivid picture than any picture that is tainted/overwritten by voice acting. humans are psychologically conditioned to give more credence to sound, voice, the way a person talks, then the content of what's said, the goings on and whatnot. this is only natural.

and since no voice actor is actually an alien, there is no way they could correctly and precisely vocalize an alien culture.

there is ?

you need to set the uqm config to 'pc' settings, instead of 3do. there is all the info you need to make it fully synced with pc version.

yes i think story info should never be given out, and the people who are writing and coding the story should be hiding it even from the people coding other parts of the project, so that the fun wont be spoiled.

I've recently downloaded original PC version of SC2 from some wierd site, but I think I was lucky to find this rarity.
I use DOSbox to run it. It's really cool. sound quality sucks but nevertheless.
It looks better to play the game in 16:10 widescreen (320x200) format as it was default in PC version and there are those text lines wich are missing in 3DO version and UQM.
It sucks to know that PC source code is lost, it would be so useful to have it  Embarrassed Embarrassed
Then we would be able to make widescreen version of UQM without any text lines missing.

sound quality sucks ?!!?!?

pc version has the best sound with high speed interrupt mod music. even with default pc speaker it can blast.

you need to play with sound settings on your dosbox.

God, I hate the Utwig. Their voice is so annoying.

playing with voice acting on is a crime against sc2. never ever do it. the graphics, text, the talking style in dialogue gives more character than a hired voice mimicking actor can give, to the aliens.

That theory has been bandied about before, but isn't that likely. The Melnorme only refer to one Mileu race from our sector of space, which would be the Taalo, which means the Faz are likely somewhere else, possibly still stuck under their slave shield. Of course, with 20000 years to try to find a way out, maybe they broke it on their own, or died out for one reason or another.

or, got out of slave shield in another sector of the galaxy, and migrated here, to this quadrant. despite they were not living here as a milieu race before (unlike taalo), they now, are.

9  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: A campaign for a new Star Control on: January 04, 2010, 03:33:01 pm

As I see it, we should focus on showing Activision that they could make a profit on such a project. Testimonials about how much any of us liked the original Star Control II are all good and well, but it's not going to help much to convince someone who's job it is to decide which projects give the best chance of making a decent profit.
I think that we should show that:
  • there is a broad support for SC2/UQM
  • games which are similar (in some way) to SC2 are currently successful
  • the concepts behind SC2 appeal to gamers today
  • SC2 has influenced the creation of other successful games
  • SC has the potential to become a successful franchise
  • SC has something to offer to Activision which is missing in their current lineup of games
all of these points can be proved by showing the success of the game mount & blade as an example.

not only it is an indie game, (only recently being published by paradox) but also was developed with nil budget, and community support. last year, it swept numerous high reviews and awards online and in gaming magazines, and is selling like mad.

the current gaming industry is in a stale state. the only thing they are doing is rehashing old games and old formats so that they wont fail to make a profit. but people grew bored already, as shown by the success of Wii and its emphasis on fun and innovation, rather than tried and known concepts. mount and blade example only support this.

the moddability of the game further extends its lifetime. even if you dont produce anything as the IP owning company, someone produces a huge scale mod, which is almost like a new game, gives it out for free, and people who want to play it still come and buy your game, because it is a mod for the game in the end.

in short - such an innovative or semi-forgotten format (mega hybrid) game with infinite moddability would be an eternal cash cow for them.

they shouldnt approach the game with this mindset though - even these considerations are necessary in corporate world, having that mindset is detrimental.

basically if they screw up our new star control in any way whatsoever, they can be sure that we, 'the people' on the net will shove it up their butts. they should be customer oriented, or die.
