1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Project 6014 is still waiting for you. on: July 10, 2016, 04:45:44 pm
I'm not planning to contribute any code myself, but I thank you for keeping the work done to date available for all of us to enjoy Smiley
You may want to update the link in the readme file, just in case someone gets their hands on a copy of this and tries to use that to find their way back to the homepage.

Wow, I didn't realize it was 10 years.
To be absolutely honest, I was taking Steve-O's comment at face value there. The wiki article on Star Control says that P6014 was started on February 2009.

Wow, only 2009?  It seems like so much longer. =P
3  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Project 6014 = Dead? on: January 18, 2015, 03:20:15 pm
so is project 6014 really dead? 2 years and no update?  if so thats a real shame, i somewhat enjoyed it, but i found the wrecked ship pretty fast...

I've been following P6014 for over ten years now.  It's not dead, it's just that it takes a long time to write such a massive game.  Especially when you're working in your spare time, with a large group of other people who are also working in their spare time, because nobody is getting paid to make this thing happen.

Genius!

Unfortunately most modern keyboards don't have numpad controls.

Please defined "most modern keyboards."
Unless you're talking about a smartphone or something, I have yet to see a computer without a numpad.  I'm sure there are probably some, but "most?"  I'm thinking not.
6  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Yargis Spaceship Shooter - Ur-Quan Style on: July 20, 2014, 05:16:09 am
I don't see anything particularly "Ur-Quan style" about this game.  Please elaborate.
I sincerely hope you aren't just grabbing the name from our website's title and using it to build some false association between UQM and your game, because that's just tacky marketing.

As for recommendations to improve, you might consider upping the graphics quality.  These graphics look great for 20 years ago, not so much for today's crowd.  I'm guessing that's having an impact on the Steam voters, too.

Hopefully nothing like the Small War will happen in the next couple of years.  I hear cold fusion finally broke even, it would be a shame to abolish the research when we're so close!

The link provided appears to be broken due to a miscreant apostrophe.  Here's the text you want:

The DOS box shows some debug information while the game is running. Right click on the icon you used to start the game, choose 'properties', and add '--logfile logfile.txt' as the first argument in the "Target" field. For example: "H:\Program Files\The Ur-Quan Masters\uqm.exe" --logfile logfile.txt --res 640x480 --bpp 32 --opengl --scale=bilinear --scroll 3do --audioquality high --addon remix

In this example, the window will open and close quickly but will put the output into "H:\Program Files\The Ur-Quan Masters\logfile.txt" for later examination via Notepad.

In original SC2, weren't you given a blank prompt for names?

Based on my vague memories of the PC version (not 100% sure if that was "original"), the fields are blank at first, but if you proceed without entering your own name, they are given default names.  Vindicator and Zelnick.

I believe the UQM HD version has an option to disable the Death march built in, if I'm not mistaken.

I always left it as "Vindicator."  Because that name is awesome enough as-is.

Also for me, the enjoyment of the game was going through it at a leisurely pace, exploring the galaxy and gradually building up my technology. If I have to rush through within some time limit then I am afraid it takes all the fun out of it for me.

When I first played the game, I went at a leisurely pace too.  I had no trouble finishing before the Kohr-Ah time limit.  Of course, I was playing the PC version where the Melnorme were always talking about their chrono-spike thingy which gave me some clue that I didn't have forever to wander around.  UQM is based off the 3DO version of the game, if I'm not mistaken, which unfortunately does not include that bit.

If there's one thing I'd like to see re-introduced to the game, it's that.  Even if there's no voice work for it, I feel like it's an important bit of info for newbies.  Not because it tells them exactly how long they have remaining or anything, but just because it's a regular reminder that they don't have forever.  That's all it ever told me, and all it needed to.

Also, IIRC, the rate at which time passes in the game is somehow based on the CPU clock speed.  Modern computers are much faster than the ones we had when the game first came out, so perhaps that means time wasted moving around solar systems is "more wasted" now than originally intended.

This could be why the orz took out the androsynth so easily. Their group of stars is a huge constellation.

No doubt.  If we combine the idea that gravity weakens interdimensional barriers with the known fact that the Androsynth were researching "dimensional fatigue," it seems likely that they chose this constellation to inhabit for this very property.
14  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: What do we REALLY know about the orz? on: December 28, 2013, 04:24:54 pm
If I'm not mistaken, we also know (from "Word of God") that whatever happened to the Androsynth, they aren't completely obliterated.  There is a chance they could escape/rebuild/return to our reality someday.

Good point. The distribution of star types is massively skewed towards heavier stars.

That's an interesting observation.  It implies that mass and gravitational fields have something to do with where one can (more easily) penetrate the dimensional fabric between TrueSpace and HyperSpace.  I like that.  I think somewhere in the back of my mind I always took that for granted, but it's nice to know there's some kind of support for the idea in the game.
