Hello fellow Hu-Mans!
It has been some time since I posted on these hallowed forums (July 2003 to be exact) but it's for good reason I'm back today!

The original developers of Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters are celebrating 30 years of the game this month! They are looking for content from the fans related to this classic game! You can post with the hashtag #uqm30years on Twitter, reply to the team's Reddit thread, or email the team with your memories of UQM!

To cap things off, there will be an online celebration on Twice on November 30th. Check out the blog post here for more info:

https://pistolshrimpgames.com/2022/11/30-years-of-the-ur-quan-masters/

If this classic game means as much to you as it does to me, I hope you'll share your memories as part of this anniversary and join the stream on the 30th! And oh yes, support the development of the sequel UQM2 by the Pistol Shrimp Games team! If you're like me, you've been waiting 30 years for the true conclusion to this classic story.

Hehe... he said Uranus...  hehe.

Ahem. Wow, the Final Fantasy games are much more fun (IMHO... the only humble opinion, actually) when you use the character's real names.  That way you don't get totally confused with the names other people used when talking about the game on the internet. Hehe, much easier that way. Tongue

no a veg bean

Haha, I'll take that as a copliment.  I assume you meant to say a Supox bean, not a stinky old vegetable bean.

the precursors are smart it might be in there computers. ways to make them ways to turn them off
they might have wrote the book on shields and forcefields

The problem with this theory is that the Precursors came long before the Ur-Quan, so how could they know anything about disabling their forcefields?  Face it, only the Chenjesu knew how to disable the forcefields...  unfortunately, they're getting all cozy with their robot friends at the start, so you can't do much about that.
5  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Portals on: July 27, 2003, 02:48:20 am
There have to be dead ends in a game... if there wasn't a dead end somewhere along the way, what would keep you searching for the end?  The portals that seem to put you out in the middle of nowhere are kind've like those dead ends in the "Choose-your-own-adventure" novels.

Pick the wrong one and you're in the middle of nowhere.

How can we give you an answer?  There is none!  We tried telling you there is nothing there, then tried telling you why... we even tried inventing the idea that there was something there!  Nothing seems to make you happy, so maybe I should try a different tactic.

...

Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

If that didn't make you happy, I dunno what will.
6  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: The "Perfect Ending"? on: July 27, 2003, 02:44:20 am
It's called a Drone because it's a drone to the Ur-Quan hierarchy.  The ship's are called Drones, not the crew.  Tongue

I think the Umgah could play plenty of jokes on the Druuge.  I wouldn't mind, and I'm sure others wouldn't either.  I would also like to see (to answer what would be the best ending) the Spathi play a trick on the Umgah and get back at them for their infamous pranks pulled over the years.  I wouldn't care if a couple Drones blew up... would you?

I thought the mothership came out facing the direction you were facing inside the starsystem when you left it? So if you go out facing south, you'll face south in HS as well. Can't prove it though, as I haven't got UQM on this machine... Confirm anyone?

This is entirely true.  I don't know how many times I would rotate my ship while cruising to leave a start system in order to orient myself in the right direction towards the next star.  I thought everyone took advantage of that.  I definately did.  My best advice when leaving a star system and you know enemies will soon swarm is to just accelerate as quickly as possible.  It doesn't matter which direction you're going until you're far enough away.

The worst incident had to be in Yehat space for me, where I had no clue which of the ten ships around me were friendly or not...  I just zipped ahead as fast as I could, bobbing in between black dots as fast as I could until I was out in the clear.  Oooo, I love doing that.   Grin

Haha, yes!  Another Mauler fan!

I've destroyed five generators before my Mauler had little more than a captain left in its deck.  I survived for a long time drifting, but unfortunately you can't survive forever. ^_^  I have to say, the Mauler is tons of fun to fly.  I just love change directions so quickly.  It's pretty tricky against the Sa-Matra, and I've yet to get all the generators... lol.  I doubt anyone could.
9  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Question.... on: July 27, 2003, 02:32:43 am
I would say the Chmmr Avatar for obvious reasons... then again, there are obvious reasons against that choice.  There's the Marauder, which likes to munch on my zapsats.  The Jugger is always a nuissance, and a Dreadnought always poses a pretty serious threat.  Still, it's the best killing machine, especially when economically trying to annihilate a bunch of smaller opponents.
10  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Tactics: Melnorme vs. Mmrnmhrm on: July 27, 2003, 02:24:23 am
I guess you could say this match is fairly balanced...  then again, most match using the Transformer can be described as balance, just because of the two forms and two speeds the ship can achieve.  I tend to find that every match with the Mmrnmhrm, if not close-matched, is fairly drawn out or even.

On average, the Trader is slow and big, while the Transofmer (or the X-Form  Tongue) is fast.  Still, it's not small enough for the Trader to be unable to hit him with his glowing colour balls of doom.

Still, even after what you guys have suggested, I can usually smoke the Trader much easier than I can the Transformer.
11  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Tactics: Melnorme vs. Mmrnmhrm on: July 26, 2003, 06:23:25 am
I would say the Trader's best bet is to gravity whip.  I could also see it using the weapon at the front to block oncoming shots, but it becomes tricky when two little missles come flying at you; both at a very low point value.  I also go straight for the other ship with my stun weapon when in the Trader.  The Transformer (I call it that.  Tongue ) has a pretty obvious tactical advantage... I've flown the ship quickly up to the Trader before, transformed, hit him with the lasers, quickly retreating with ease.

However, the computer Trader's pretty good at smelling me coming and turns around right when I get in close and can't retreat.  I've been playing this matchup for a couple minutes, and for me the Transformer wins 75% of the time.  Then again, I'm not the most formidable Trader captain.

I'm sure we could find someone in the earthgov who enjoys song and dance...  you know, a connoisseur of fine arts.  A man who enjoys West Side Story or Les Misérables.  A man with substance and style...

... I think Captain Kirk has volunteered!  Congratulations!

When I was young I would have dreams about video games, and in my dreams things would happen in the game--and I would be absolutely convinced they were real.
I had a big crush on Princess Peach, so she and I had many dreams together....

*Ahem*  If you check out Yukki's site, she's got some goodies in her treasure box.  One of them is a bunch of icons for all the device ideas in the game.  No sign of any precursor data disks, but there are other devices that never saw the light.

If you travel to the nearest system to the portal you speak of, you can find the Mark II on the third planet...  but you'll have to fight a couple Mycon who drifted away from the pod.  It's a tough fight, but I'm sure you know how to fight the pitiful Podship...  Leaving the old ship behind is tough.  In fact, I cried at the touching moment when you trade ships and then take the new helm.  Well, good luck.  The Mark II is actually miniature-sized, so you'll hafta look really closely when you search on the planet.  Might take you a couple hours to find it...

By the way, we're not machines in this forum.  I mean, we may be god-like in our skills of reciting useless facts from the Star Control universe, but don't expect an answer to a question you never asked.  Even I can't answer those!   Grin

And you don't have the gene huh?
Haha... I was the first recorded case of this awful geek disease, my friend!

I like to prove, on a consistent basis, that my level of knowledge is lower than the average human being on the 'net.  And if I had to prove a point in every post, I'd stay away from the web altogether...  no way I could do that.

The Trader is a fun ship to fight against, even if you lose.  I hate how the computer still has an excellent steering ability even after you've stunned him with your second ability.  Still, something fun about pounding that huge ship with your guns.
