1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Gamespy ranks Star control 2 as #1 most wanted remaster! on: February 26, 2008, 08:52:54 am
I noted the writer says "the galaxy" numerous times. As we all should know, the given map is only a section of the galaxy, possibly a very minute section as well.

And to be exact, Star Control 2 *has* been brought back to the modern world. But I agree on one thing; I too would like to see Wing Commander, X-wing and TIE Fighter be remastered.

Should we now congratulate Iranians for their good taste?  Tongue

Despite this being an old thread, I reply.

My nick was born the instant I punched my keyboard with both hands. It spelled out "fsidib" and I added the hyphen in-between. Ta dah!
Er, so how did you get two of the same letter in there?
I'm skilled at mashing with vibration!
4  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Old memories of Star Control 2 on: February 03, 2008, 11:37:47 pm
Childhood memories of Star Control 2 are rather golden to me, even though I finished the story mode as late as 2003. I'll explain why as we go forth.

I was 6 years old when Star Control 2 came out, about the same age when my brother brought the game home. I was a frequent spectator when my brother was playing, but I don't have any clear memories of any events that took place back then regarding my brother's playing. Anyhow I fondly remember the copyright protection method; identify a star by its coordinates. Even around the age of 6 to 8 I was able to remember nearly every constellation on the map, excluding the ones in Ur-Quan/Kohr-Ah space.

And of course I had Legos. I built all kinds of stuff from Legos, mainly starships. Yes, starships, always starships actually. I remember having a bit repository of pistache shells... I placed the constructed ship on the floor, and stacked pairs of shells on the sides of the Lego starship ... representing crew and batt. Some might view this as deranged or cute. Or both. I had numerous concepts for "my own ships", as I believe many have had, at any age. Even right now!

I once tried to play the story mode about when I was 8... even though I was Finnish and most shows made for kids where undubbed, I didn't excel very well in English. I understood basics; play, load, quit and that sort. The absence of internet slowed my progress. A shame. However; I remember getting in the story mode as far as getting the Portal Spawner, then I vaguely recall feeling uncomfortable as I found out from the Melnorme the whatever-orb was turning black, indicating a time limit (this piece of dialog is not in UQM or the 3DO version). Some might say I was a bit scared about the idea. And, well, barely understanding anything from the plot I found myself in a dead end; I didn't know where to go next, and with the time limit knocking on my door, I guess I felt anxious.

Nevertheless Super-Melee never left. Until some poopy operating systems changed. I truly regret for not having a perfect memory. I want to re-live those days.

Do *you* have such memories of Star Control 2, back when you were young?

Aren't those screenshots in Star Control 2 section from Ur-Quan Masters? The gap between ship and menu, and menu is in text.
6  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Hillary bashing on: February 02, 2008, 03:43:10 pm
If McCain wins in the republican thingie next Tuesday, it would be a disaster to democrats. No doubt about that.

I've already seen at least reports and analyses that Hillary would have a harder time winning against McCain than Obama. Both of these analyses are in Finnish, thus I refrain from linking them.

This is not very far-fetched. Hillary divides people a lot. You see the effect here. And you can't really see people bashing Obama. Maybe Hillary supports your ideals, but in my opinion is not a winning candidate against the republicans.

Anyhow I've started to strongly believe McCain will win the presidental elections, mainly because democrats can't make up their minds.

Odd that no one gave the advice of using a Spathi against Slylandro Probe. Simply run away and shoot BUTTs.

I find it misguided, if someone votes for Hillary just because they liked how her husband did the job.
It's just as misguided for a Democrat to not to vote for her in the general election just because she gives off a bad vibe. In any case, you guys who have a beef with her best not forget to vote in the primary. Obama's gonna need it.
Correct you are. Never did I mean to imply that Hillary would be the utmost worst choice of all candidates. She's just not the one I'd choose as a first choice.

Edited to make clearer and remove ambiguous statements.

And it wouldn't look good for USA, if for 20 years there has been 4 presidents, all from two families. Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton. I mean, really, what?! Democratic nepotism?
10  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Hillary bashing on: January 30, 2008, 10:40:18 pm
I don't really have to worry about USA politics, but if I'd live there, my vote would be cast on Obama. Odd how most of the people I know seem to lean that way, huh.

I'll give my short insert in here.

If you are able to recreate the atmosphere that took place on Eta Vulpeculae II (Androsynth homeworld) and Arcturus I (Burvixese homeworld), all I can say is *go for it!*
13  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: How long will Star Control live? on: January 25, 2008, 02:24:32 am
At the current state, I'm making the best effort to make Star Control 2 and UQM as known as possible, whether it was irritating or not. I'm actually partly organizing small meeting and gatherings about twice a year, and I attempt to hold UQM tournaments. At least it gives it publicity.
14  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: What if you woke up, and the Ur-Quan sounded more like this... on: February 03, 2007, 10:00:52 am
Ur-Quan, certain parts could be spoken slightly slower, to give the atmosphere of authority.

Ilwrath, as many have said, somewhat deeper to make them more creepy.

Umgah, blobby, yes, but hard to understand. Better than the 3DO anyhow.

Pkunk, breathing is an issue for one, but other than that they sounded more like old witches than cheerful spiritual evangelists.

Yehat, they just didn't sound like a war-faring clan species.

One thing. If anyone makes Druuge, please make their voices raspy.
15  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: The bio (the species in our home quadrant) on: February 03, 2007, 09:23:15 am
Even modern day scientists gather many specimen, since one specimen doesn't reveal all the facts hiding in the species' culture, physiology, psychology, evolution, recent events etc.

I don't seek any kind of realism from the lander sequence. For one you can't travel across the north or south pole.  The species are not the same, just shown the same as some others.
