91  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Fully packed android version? on: November 01, 2013, 06:25:04 pm
Okay so I managed to download the most recent update of UQM on Android ...

... and I have two observations that kind of makes me sad:
1. I see no support for the generic USB controller
2. When I turn off the black command bar with the >> icon on the right, another black bar appears on the top, so I can't stretch the rendered image corner-to-corner.

Otherwise it's awesome!

I know, and it seems I've both phrased my question wrongfully and misunderstood onpon4's answer earlier. Such an idiot I am.

What I actually need is an apk that incorporates 3DO content, so there's no need to download anything. Never mind though, I managed to sideload the basic stuff in my mini pc (wifi sucks), so if I can upgrade it with the 3DO content in any other way that would be fine.

Somehow I just wanted to make a C64 version ...

Great! Another reason to play UQM through again for japanophiles like me. Smiley

Is there a list of the japanese dub cast out there? Some of them sound familiar to me?

Maybe an early Dnyarri design.

I do indeed use the SC3 puppet as the basis, though I found that the original doesn't have much content, so I made up some additional stuff to fill the screen.

The Real Syreen! An encounter with the Syreen in their original form, without the psychically induced freudian idealization of their image.

99  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Are shofixty too racist? on: September 08, 2013, 10:46:59 pm
I detect no fallacy in onpon4's response. Nobody said writers need to be perfect, however if your work is so heavily affected by the aforementioned qualities, you shouldn't expect anything good coming from people you're addressing with it.

In other words, the consistent misspelling conveys only that you -- while claiming witch such a conviction that you're a writer -- don't give a shit about the quality of your writing. You've been critiqued numerous times for your work by numerous critics, but instead of a rational response e.g. "Okay guys I'll fix this" then presenting an improved product, you blame others and make up excuses for your failure.

Presenting updated versions would be very easy, but you refuse to do such a thing and try to cover behind the concept of drafting -- a defense that might work in case you're working with pen and paper, but in an age and situation where editable digital medium is at your hand it's none less than obvious bullshit.

When it comes to you, bullshitting regularly comes in a package deal with constructing erroneous arguments, this time about the ancient traditions of storytelling. Rather than doing the more reasonable and less labour intensive solution of correcting yourself, you sweep the responsibility over to the reader saying "it's fine as long as it sounds English". It's not. Writing is not telling or vice versa. Writing was invented for a reason, which is to make records more accurate and reliable than oral accounts. Reliability is an important component of making records, that's why there are rules to writing, ensuring the right spelling and grammar. Those who read are reading with these rules in mind, and becoming distracted by errors, and beyond a certain level of tolerance are simply annoyed by them. Now, as an alleged writer, is your goal to distract or annoy your readers? I guess not, because allegedly you made a record of your ideas to be reviewed and discussed by other forum members. So here's an advice: make it reviewable and discussable!

However if you insist arguing with how correct writing is not important, here's an alternative solution from someone who does give a shit: don't write, and don't call yourself a writer! If you have such a confidence in your theory, then for you it's more effective to tell us your story orally, and call yourself a "storyteller".

It's a shame indeed. Would that one came out, it could have been the first custom shipset released instead of my N'Grath.

Even if P6014 performs something truly awesome it won't be anything more than an alternate timeline to official, even if it follows the premises built by TFB. SC3 is a viable continuation of SC2 and at the time it was made -- like it or not -- it was official. Consumer preference might say otherwise, but that sentiment only is not enough to declare that a mere fan project is the true continuation of a storyline. You either have to own the franchise -- and on an official level that alone is enough -- or need to have an influence in it's creation, none of which you do.

StarDock owns the franchise now, and they decided to leave the TFB timeline to be continued by Paul and Fred whenever they wish, while SD reboots the franchise in an alternate timeline forking off from the first encounter with the Chenjesu. With this, Brad Wardell and his boys not only demonstrated how they have way more class than you have, but also made a statement that unless Paul and Fred decide to make a sequel to SC2, the conclusion of the TFB timeline is that there's nothing worth a videogame plot happening after Grandpa Zelnick's tale ends. You have no influence in this matter. The only thing you can do is to admit that whatever you make won't ever be the mainstream, just a highly appreciated alternate work at the best.
103  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Stardock Highest Bidder on Star Control Trademark on: September 06, 2013, 11:04:51 pm
Regardless of your intent, the fact that P6014 is merely a fan sequel automatically makes it's story play in a timeline alternate to that of the TFB official

That would only be true if TFB had already came out with their own version, which they haven't.

Wrong. The TFB storyline ended with the destruction of the Sa-Matra, with some hints about the future that aren't necessarily worth a new plot. The fact that TFB didn't make a sequel doesn't make P6014 anything less alternate.
104  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: UQM-SE5 shipsets on: September 06, 2013, 10:51:27 pm
Heh, the SE3 demo was one of the first PC games I ever played ... the good old days Smiley

I had a long relationship with SEIV but now I'm stuck with SEV because that's where my quasi-art is "needed". I don't play with it frequently but I always return to it from time to time. Since the series is dead now, some of us started a project called FrEee to create a technologically fresh version of SEIV, with some elements borrowed from SE3 and V.

Based on the fact that we didn't really see anything from the Arilou other than the Skiff, I took some liberty in designing the capships. If you Google the Arilou Skiff you get pictures of two different colorations. I chose to model the original one-colored Skiff as a "Fighter" -- visible only on the ground combat screen -- while making capships follow the more complex blue/light blue alternative. I decided to add some markings to the textures to increase the overall complexity of them, and to act as a factor for differentiation between smaller and larger ships.

Beech's stuff was always strong quality, his Tylmai is a huge bucket of win on SEIV. I often changed the portraits and race names associated with the shipsets, so in my library the Angelicans became the Aos.
105  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Stardock Highest Bidder on Star Control Trademark on: September 06, 2013, 09:04:52 pm
Well it's very simple: The intent is not to write about other realities, it's to complete the storyline into the sequel with events based off of SC2. If we wanted to write about other realities, why would we only write about 1 other possible reality?

Regardless of your intent, the fact that P6014 is merely a fan sequel automatically makes it's story play in a timeline alternate to that of the TFB official or the StarDock official. You have no choice in the matter.
