1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: FIghting Melnorme on: August 13, 2003, 09:30:35 pm
... Primat, you've finished this game in every way humanly possible, haven't you? Out of curiosity, do you do this with all games, or is this an exception?

Actually it was around the time that everyone was asking how quickly SC2 could be beaten, I believe somewhere around March or so. What with my fiancee at work all day, I had lots of spare time. And I don't really do this with all games, to answer your question, just ones that don't bore me to tears upon replay.
2  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Portals on: July 24, 2003, 11:11:35 pm
Yeah, the Quasi-space portals aren't completely intended for your SC2 shopping convenience, otherwise I personally would have placed them in slightly different spots. They're just a sort of freeway system to get you places faster--note that in real life, freeways don't always exit at the exact place you want to end up, they're just a way of getting their faster and with less gas. Sometimes it's faster to go to places via surface streets.

Note that it does take 10 fuel units and several days just to utilize a Quasi-Space portal. It's not always more efficient. And yes, some freeways do lead to the middle of nowhere, where there's nothing important. Still, there are some interesting sights around (star systems) you'd probably never ever have seen otherwise.
3  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Precursor data discs on: July 24, 2003, 11:07:39 pm
Wasn't there some mention by Hayes of some abandoned data discs on Pluto that indirectly referred to the Precursors? Yes, it sounds like a bit of trivia and fluff, and I doubt it was intended as a serious plot device (beyond getting you curious enough to go look for Fwiffo) but who knows, maybe it WAS an abandoned plot device and Haye's conversation may have referred to it.

What can I say that you've not already said? They're incredibly calm and unshakeable under any situation, which makes them very cool. The whole, genocidal-slaughter-in-the- name-of-galactic-peace thing aside.

Well, I'd be remiss to neglect mentioning that they do lose their cool when you approach the Sa-Matra. Then again, I'm pretty sure any human religious zealot would be pretty darn annoyed if some pesky monkeys tried to desecrate a religious artifact of theirs.
5  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Eeeevil! on: July 24, 2003, 10:59:54 pm
Plus, in order to turn this into a black and white state of affairs, you need to actually define evil. What is it by your definition? The state of being under which one commits acts that inconveniences others? That harms others? What do you define as that fine line between 'okay' and 'not okay'? Killing? Enslaving? Torturing? Manipulating others for personal gain?

In each of those cases 'evil' is completely different.
The Kohr-Ah don't believe in torture, don't believe in manipulating others, don't believe in humiliating other races nor do they act out of profit at the expense of others. Yet most would define them as evil.

The Syreen however do enslave others, do manipulate others for personal gain, and do kill the Mycons in the name of vengeance. However, most people would define them as 'good' as well as perfectly justified.

So, yes. You can't really define any race as evil in terms of black and white, because none of them really fit the paradigm. Though I have to agree with Shiver; if any race comes close to completely 'evil', in my opinion it would have to be the Druuge and the Dnyarri.
6  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: How I get a better position? on: July 24, 2003, 10:52:10 pm
Though after 100 posts, it becomes a lot more incremental. 500 to obtain the highest position, and only Lukipela and Death999 have managed that as of yet. (Though yes, I am pretty close.)

Is it possibile to win game while having Melnorme Traders as your enemies?

Anybody tried?

How Drudge fit in this picture?

Yes, I tried to beat the game as fast as humanly possible once, without meeting the Melnorme at all and not finishing the Shofixti quest. I managed to do it by November of 2155, but I imagine it could be done even sooner, since I did bungle up a bit here and there.

And yes, you need to deal with the Druuge no matter what.
8  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Melnorme exposed! on: July 18, 2003, 04:53:55 am

I meant the exact oppisite.  I left out a 'not' or messed up the order or something.  Yep I agree with you, I was disagreeing with Ms.Kohr-ah over there =)

Sigh. It never ends does it? Whine whine whine. 'Oh boo hoo, we don't want to die. The price of galactic peace isn't worth it. Boo hoo.'

You'd think at least one or more alien races would be a little more accepting of what needs to be done. But noooo, the lot of them just HAVE to be a bunch of selfish buggers. *rolls eyes*

Evil, even a little, tends to lead to the Dark Side sooner or later, which isn't necessarily a good thing. In fact it tends to be rather the opposite. Kind of an evil thing really. Although in my darker moments I do have to admit that the Kohr-Ah have a splendid vision. No greed, famine or suffering. Just the cool emptiness of space. With them as guardians, the purity and simplicity of the Universe would be assured almost forever...

The Kohr-Ah are hardly evil. They simply wish to press for equality. Reducing everyone to the lowest common denominator as you will. They're the epitome of order in a maelstrom of intolerable galactic chaos.

Go to the Pkunk if you want to know the relationship of 'good' to 'evil'. Or better yet, for true evil, try and sit through a conversation with the Druuge.
10  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Spathi Minerals on: July 15, 2003, 10:29:58 pm
I'd have to agree with D-999...

A kiloton? One thousand tons? Ton being two thousand pounds? Two million pounds of poop in a Spathi space vessel that carries 30 Space Clams? Dear God!
11  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Whats the deal with the Androsynth?(spoilers) on: July 15, 2003, 10:27:26 pm
Androsynth? I don't know what you're talking about. Never heard of them. You're just imagining things. Do not speak of this again.

Okay, please don't get angry Shiver, but what REALLY happened to the Androsynth?
12  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: thin serpent? on: July 11, 2003, 09:44:18 pm
What I'd love Zex to say are the simple words, 'It's not the Horologii constellation." Everytime I play that game after a long hiatus (and forget where the beast is) I always head straight there. Why? Because it looks like an Ouroboros surrounding some sort of snack food.

I agree with Spathi. Nice job with the spoiling.
13  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Spathi Minerals on: July 10, 2003, 09:06:22 pm
I was always under the impression that the Spathi were offering you the, erm, resources out of their toilets...

Sorry, me and my potty humor.  Grin

They are, at least that's what I always figured.
Methane gas and interesting organic compounds.
Here, take all the Space Clam poop you want, enjoy!
14  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Big Uranus Glitch on: July 10, 2003, 09:01:50 pm
Just re-name the thing if it bothers ya that much :-p

I do, however the name Vindicator is 'default' most people know the ship as. Much as is 'Zelnick'. Kind of like those Video Games where you're given the option to rename your characters, but most people know them as their default name.
15  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Big Uranus Glitch on: July 07, 2003, 09:31:28 pm
Actually, that one crew member is Fwiffo himself..
When you're piloting the Vindicator (damnit I hate that name, I always prefer Liberator) the number of crew you have on the main screen is upped by one for space melee combat to factor in you as the captain.
