I'm not sure I would include Chenjesnu or Vux in that list, since they do hamper your ability to fight.  And Slylandro don't have a secondary ability even though they should have.  What happened to thier defensive missiles, a system that was "hard wired into the probe" something that could not be changed?

Well, completing that quest is not exactly easy for a beginner that isn't cheating (reading a walkthrough). It requires solving a riddle that is nearly impossible to solve without the original paper star map, unless you get a tip that you only get on one very specific condition (which isn't hinted at by the game in any way to be useful).

True, on your first try you probably will not complete that task.  But once you know what ZEX wants, Culture 20 tells you where to find it.  ZEX's clue is pretty meaningless.  And the Melnorme tell you that some Yehat are unhappy with thier state of affairs once you sell a few rainbow worlds to them and have the credits to buy info.

We all know you have to play the game a few times to really learn everything and put it all together.  Or cheat.  But once you know what to do, I don't see why anyone would not do it, given the reward.

And what's all the whining about mining?  I have no problem with current mining techniques.  I would NOT want to be forced to stop without being able to fill my hold just because the last spot of mineral on the planet is bigger than I have room for.  Sometimes I just want to pick a quick 50 or 100 (depending on hold size) of whatever mineral is there and not care if I waste half a big spot to fill my hold.  Sometimes you need to get in and out quick because your landers are not up to staying on the planet long.

Now, that being said, I don't do that with PURPLE!  Because purple minerals are worth sooo much more than any other, I make sure I don't waste any of it.   But for the rest, I like the way we mine.  And with auto mining, how would you collect the life forms when they are present?  Again, with life forms I am sometimes selective, depending on planet conditions and the life itself.  Some are not really worth chasing after.  I guess I'm a hands on type of person, I don't like letting some idiot computer do things for me that I can't control.

I would like to be able to choose what race I sic the Illrath onto.  At the point in the game when I send the Illrath away, something that must be done in order to get to the Chmmr, the Thraddash are Earth Allies.  They send thier captains and we can build thier ships in our shipyards.  True, they are not OUR friends specifically, because Captian "little thief" stole thier Aqua Helix.  But why kill off an ally when we can tell the Illrath to take out the Vux or the Druuge, or maybe finish off the Mycon?  Thrad Culture 20 are Earth Allies, lets not kill them off.  Besides, they are my favorite ship to fight with, and once the Illrath get to Thraddash space, we cannot build any more of them.

And why doesn't the Commander at the Starbase tell us the Thraddash or the Syreen are now our allies?

I too would like to be able to fight an entire battle group of enemy at once IF I CHOOSE!  The largest battle group one encounters is 5 ships during a random encounter in space.  Yes, I know that some specific places have more ships.  But, depending upon the enemy, I would like the choice to fight them one at a time or all at once, especially if there are only 2 or 3 ships in the battle group.
Yes, I know that would require an upgrade to the "auto tracking module" controlling our ships fire.

Ok, completing that task is optional, but I'm not sure why anyone would not do it.  Perhaps that's because the Yehat people are my favorite species of the game.  I"m not talking about thier ships, which are good fighters, but I'm talking about the people themselves.  We don't really get to talk with them too much, but they are my kind of people.  If I lived in that Universe, I would probably live in Yehat space.  At least until the bird-brained idiots got there.

Never mind the great benefit you get at the endgame for doing it.

You can go to settings and have the Cyborg fight for you, but don't put it on Cyborg+ or ++.
Why not?

Because on Cyborg you can watch the fight at normal speed, see what's happening and perhaps learn a tactic or two, or more likely learn what NOT to do since the AI is such a poor fighter, especially with the Precursor ship.  Remember, the OP is a beginner.
On Cyborg+ the fight happens so fast you really cant see much until one ship explodes and the fight is over.  Too frustrating.
On Cyborg++ you get to see nothing.  The computer decides the outcome and you don't even get to watch or know why.  Totally unacceptable.

Not all ships chase you, the Mycon don't always and neither do the Spathi.

Now that you mention it, the few times a rock has done something good for me was when it bumped a Mycon that was running from me.
23  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Orz... True Form? on: May 23, 2013, 02:32:49 pm
NO, definately not older than or even as old as precursor.  But way older than US, because in the game they say "we knew the first human."  They've been tinkering with our genes since the beginning, they may have even created us!  But I think they've been where the Orz came from for a long time, in fact they might have even been tinkering with our genes to protect us from the Orz or others like them.  At least they say something to that effect in the game.

What, no one else with anything to rant or complain about?  Well, I've got another...

Those $%^&* Rocks!  Those blasted asteroids.  Those stupid rocks are always popping up out of nowhere and blocking my path.  Against most ships my primary tactic with the Predursor ship is to retreat away from them, keeping them at optimum range and blasting the crap out of them.  Most ships are killed by the Hellbore Cannon with 1 or 2 shots, the  Kohr Ah take 3 or sometimes more.  And the rocks rarely seem to do anything to the enemy ship that is in my favor.

Its bad enough I've got to fight the enemy ship, why the %^&*() do I have to fight the darn GAME too?!?

2v2?  I wouldn't mind trying 1v 2 or even 1v3.  Depending upon the enemy, but after your Precursor ship is upgraded to the max, its pretty powerful.  I think I could take on 2 or 3 other ships.  I think the hardest would be the Kohr Ah, they're pretty tough.

I don't like the 16-angle limitation, but there's no rant do do there.

Yes, the 16 angle limitation is a pain if you are using a directional, non homing weapon.  Not really a factor with homing weapons, which the Precursor ship has once we have purchased the auto tracking device from Mel Torme.
27  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: The end game on: May 21, 2013, 03:50:54 pm

This is not universally good advice, since it depends on whether you've completed a certain optional side quest.

Actually it does work whether or not you make the Pkunk your friends.  If you don't make them your friends they don't appear to make their pilgrimage to the home stars, but if you've completed that other task then it still works.

"That other task" is an optional side quest.

Yeeaahh... I believe the other poster mentioned that.  And your point is...?

For that one, a bit of lore can explain the reasoning. The Chmmr retains the natural sensibility to hyberwave broadcast of the Chenjesu. By the virtue of this fact, they can detect what is coming through the slave shield while other enslaved planet will not be able to do so. I think that at some point, the game mention that no matter how good the hyperwave broadcast is, it doesn't match the capabilities of the Chenjesu. But, I am not sure about the last one.

Never heard about the Chenjesu hyperwave capabilities.  So no other planet has hyperwave machines on the surface?  If so, you know there are always those die-hard idiots who keep it turned on "just in case" or "for old times sake" or whatever the reason.

Really?!?  So 150 years from now we can do no better than plucking old ICBMs from their silos and stuffing them into launch tubes aboard our ships?  Obviously without upgrading thier targeting processes!  I guess no one ever heard of putting some ECCM into the missiles targeting sensors...

Most of those were MIRVs, with anywhere from 10 to 20 warheads.  So why can't we attack a whole fleet with one missile?

No one else with anything to rant about?

Thank you. Well, that answers a part of my post in the Quick questions thread.  I guess, combat is such a relevant part of the game, that I either learn it or let the game be. Maybe it's just to fast for an old man  Grin
Well, I'll try again. Maybe the gods are with me this time. Can I pause a combat at least?

Combat isn't a HUGE part of the game, but you do have to fight sometimes.  As the game goes on, you can add weapons to your ship and make the primary ship a better fighter.  BUT, you can also carry up to 12 outriders, ships that can fight for you if you choose.  You start with an Earth cruiser as an outrider and when mining the Earth solar system, make sure you go to Pluto and make friends with Fwiffo, the Spathi ship you find there.
Because you will have to fight any Slylandro probe you meet, and Fwiffo does that fairly well as long as you use the right tactics.
I recommend going to SuperMele and practice fighting.  The ships you will have access to as the game progresses are Earth cruiser, Pkunk, Spathi, Orz, Arilu, Thraddash if you create Culture 20, Utwig and Suppox.  In the beginning, practice with the Earth ships and the Spathi, since those will be the first ones you have access to in the beginning of the game.  Hint - both those ships have homing missiles, Spathi are shorter range, Earth's are long range.  Your best tactic will be staying away from the enemy ship and lobbing missiles at them.  Hint2 - every ship, exceot the Precursor shop, has 2 weapons, a primary weapon which is fired when you press "control" and a special weapon whis is used by pressing  "shift."

You can go to settings and have the Cyborg fight for you, but don't put it on Cyborg+ or ++.
This isn't specifically a fighting game, but there will be times you must fight and most of us enjoy the fight.  Especially as the game goes on and you acquire the assets to really power up your Precursor ship and make it really strong, capable of beating any other ship out there.
