31  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Just a little Ur-Quan Ranting and Raving on: May 20, 2013, 03:35:37 pm
The game has some quirks that I've always wanted to rant and rave about.  Now I've found a place to do that!
I'll start slow...

With either of the 2 powerful hyperwave casters you can talk thru the slave shield to the Chmmr.  Why can't you talk to the folks at any other slave shielded world?

And why do we have to send the Illrath to kill the Thraddash?  By the time you do that, in the game they should be our allies,  Even tho Culture 20 doesn't like YOU, Captain Bozo, the "little theif" who stole thier Aqua Helix, they are still EARTH ALLIES!  They still send ships captains and we can build their ships in our shipyard right up until the moment the Illrath get to their space.  Instead of killing off our allies, we should be able to pick who we send them to kill, the Vux or the Druuge or maybe finish off the Mycons...

And who the heck programmed the Earth long range homing missiles... that MISS half the time!?!  You've fired your missile at a Mycon ship that is moving STRAIGHT away from you.  It doesn't maneuver and your missile is heading right for it.  Then, at the last possible moment, the missile SWERVES AROUND the enemy ship!!!  AAARRRRGGGG!  And you only had to hit it one more time to kill it and now the Mycon batt is recharged and it gives itself more life and now I've got to keep fighting the %$#@ thing!  Our Air Force has better missiles than that NOW, and this is supposed to be in the future, when stuff is more advanced!?!

Thanks, I needed that!  Anyone else have anything to Rant about?

Hint: don't be "too successful" in fighting the 6 guard ships (3 UrQuan and 3 KorAh) around the Sa-Matra.  Make sure you have at least 5 or 6 empty spots when you get past that last KorAh ship, even if that means letting them kill the outrider ships you fight with.
This is not universally good advice, since it depends on whether you've completed a certain optional side quest.

Actually it does work whether or not you make the Pkunk your friends.  If you don't make them your friends they don't appear to make their pilgrimage to the home stars, but if you've completed that other task then it still works.

The Dnyarri is also sure that the bomb by itself is too weak, hence why he refuses to use his powers at that point.

Of course, its called Game Drama!  Thats the way the game is made.  You can't go straight to step 3 if you haven't done steps 1 or 2.  Actually, getting to Sa Matra is more like step 11 or 12.

Anyway, one would think that an explosion large enough to "disperse an unwanted moon" would do some serious damage to any ship.  Especially if it is contained and concentrated within that fused asteroid shell.  The UrQuan wouldn't be able to repair that kind of damage even if the ship were not totally destroyed.  Sure they found it and figured out how to fly it and shoot a few guns.  In the centruies they've had it, they might even be able to make a few minor repairs.  But the level of damage that would likely be done by even just the bomb itself would be far beyond them to repair.  It should still have the desired effect - Urquan and Kohr Ah forces fall into disarray and Allied forced mop up.  After that, what's left of the Sa Matra would belong to US to study and learn from!  For my money, a better outcome than totally destroying such marvelous advanced technology.

And when you get there, don't forget to make a map of the exit points of "Pretty Space" also known as "Quasi Space."
35  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Stuck with a Skylandro on: March 27, 2013, 02:24:42 pm
Let it catch up to you, enter battle with your flagship, and flyyyyyyy as far away from it as you can. This won't be far cuz it seems like you're slower than it is. As soon as you can, hit the escape key and you'll zip out of the battle after about 5 seconds. You'll lose a few men but be safe.

NOT!!!  5 seconds is a loooooooong time and that Slylandro would wipe out his 21 crew in far less time than that.  I once made the mistake of doing that with about 100 crew.  When the ship finally warped out I had 35 left.

Question to the OP - why don't you have your friend Fwiffo?  Did you lose him in battle?  Because Spathi can kill the probes quite nicely.
As one other poster said, you'll have to start over from your previous save and make sure you have either outriders or something to fight with.

You mean without using the dnyarri? Because nothing else you can get can scratch the Sa-Matra.

Not the outer shell, no.  But once past the force field and to the actual ship inside, why not being able to destroy it with Hellbore Cannon?  Or why can't there be a way to deliver the bomb to the ship and retreat, detonating it once you're back outside the shell?  The fuzed asteroid shell around the ship would actually focus the blast within.  That shell might be left over, but the ship itself should be toast.  Because the ship itself is not made out of fuzed asteroids.  Its just a really big, defenseless ship.

Any ship can be destroyed once past its defenses, Precursor or not.  And given the physical layout of the Sa-Matra, the Utwig bomb should be more than powerful enough to destroy everything inside the asteroid shell.  There is no real need to destroy the shell itself, and destroying the ship should at least weaken the shell, breaking it into several peices.

Yeah, yeah!  Logic vs drama, and drama wins every time!  But think about it...

In the beginning make sure you make friends with the Pkunk.  Keep at least 3 of the ships they give you, they're worth it in the end.

Also, wait until the last minute to send the Illrath to kill the Thrads, first get at least 5 or 6 Thrad ships.  They kill Green UrQuan easily and are not too bad taking out Kor Ah either.

As for Avatar ships, they're crap.  The Broodhome and old X form fighters had 2 of the 3 Alliance long range weapons.  Now its not much better than a Vux.  Yeah, it'll go toe-to=toe with a KorAh or UrQuan, but only one.  Its not better than a Broodhome and the x-form ship that was fast and fired the 2 long range homing missiles was my favorite Star Control ship, I could kill anything with that one.

If you've learned all the tasks you must accomplish to get to the end game, then you just need to figure out how to do them all faster.

It'd be neat to have a mod which caps it at  like a few hundred or something. Then you can lander down and wipe out some life forms.

'... wipe out some life?"  No, I wanted to fight my way past the UrQuan around the Sa-Matra and try to destroy it without using the bomb.
39  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Thraddash. on: March 20, 2013, 05:48:27 am
In my game, after you've sent them off to fight in the UrQuan Wars and show off thier new "butt blaster" modifications, you only need to destroy about 5 or 6 battle groups.  Then you stop and talk with one who thinks that "Maybe humans can fight after all..."  Then you kill another 5 or 6 battle groups and they become your friends.  At that point in my game my ship isn't armed, I use my outriders to fight for me.  Earth ships kill the Thrads quite nicely if you stay in one spot and just lob missiles at them.

Side note: the comp does not fight with the Thrad ships very well, they really arn't very hard to beat.  However, when I use Thrad ships to fight, I cream the Green UrQuan easily.  If they'd have had the "butt blaster" mod before the UrQuan got to Thraddash space, the UrQuan would be the Thrads battle thralls!

I never thought about the Talana ordeal.  That will be more humor than anything else I think.

We gave it a go a little while ago.  The broken Ilwrath was a little much.  Didn't help that it randomly spawned fairly close by though.  I told her the truth: sometimes that one can get the best of us and we'd try again another day.

"...the Talana ordeal"Huh  Never thought of it that way before!  The first time I showed the "getting laid" scene to my girlfriend, she thought it was hilarious, then we ended up re-inacting it.  Not exactly what I'd call an "ordeal."
41  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Number of "home world" ships on: March 20, 2013, 01:14:34 am
Darn, not what I wanted to hear, but I suspected as much.  At the point in the game where I get the Sun device, my precursor ship is very powerful and can whip the crap out of Mycons easily.  I tried killing them all once but after about 45 min there didn't seem to be an end so I gave up and escaped out.  Sadly, I lost count of how many I splatted...
42  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Number of "home world" ships on: March 20, 2013, 01:09:28 am
When at an alien home world or at special places like the Chmmr planet in Illrath space (before you send them away) or the planet where the Sun device is in Beta Brehe or around the Sa-Matra, are those ships that seem to radiate out to infinity really limitless or is there a finite number of them.

In other words, if you fight long enough can you kill them all and get to the planet?
