Nah, you'd get struck down very quickly. Take a look at FreeCraft and Blizzard - FreeCraft just had the *name*, nothing more, and was forced to shut down. MiB would be as well.

Probally through use of C++ classes you could.. have each key planet in some class like 'key', and the rest in classes for their star-system names, and then have a function that randomizes the X and Y coordinates for each non-key class's planets..

..if that made any sense at all.

Lith -- Once it's done, I might be amenable to that.  The source is a little sloppy and I'm leery about the idea of releasing the source to it while it's still a WIP; my concern is a desynching of versions and stuff.  Maybe once the prototype is finished, we can talk about rebuilding it entirely in C++ rather than my current plan of porting it to VB.  (Since I want to ultimately add graphics / music.)

That would be a good idea to port it to C++, and if you want some help in that I could offer assistance, yes. And I can see your worry about de-syncing, so I can agree with not releasing it yet.

Drop me a mail at Postmaster@[NOSPAM]Lithorien.net ((Remove the [NOSPAM]..)) sometime to discuss this, if you like. Smiley

Unfortunately, no.  My programming knowledge is limited to nigh-useless languages (Logo Writer, QuickBasic, and a smattering of Visual Basic), so unless there's any easy QB->Unix port, I don't know how I can pull it off.  Aren't there DOS emulators for *nix systems?

Hmm. Care to release the source code, so that I might be able to port it to C/C++ for us Linux-y types?

Any chance this will be coded for a *nix-based system in the near future?

Melee problem: I select my group of ships, and it goes to the flashing black screen with the question mark beside my forces. Controls freeze, I can't do anything and have to kill the game.

I got the caster, just a little annoyed with the idiots for abandoning me. Heh.. and if I should start over then I guess I will do that. Thank'ee kindly.. at least I know a few good systems to planet-mine now so I don't do so much guessing.. Wink

Heh, just did that. Apparently they're defending their homeworld?

And no.. no ships. Just the flagship is left.. lost the Earth Cruiser trying to fight them. Can't do Melee to train, the game freezes on me.

*sighs* I take it this is the hard part of the game?

Edit: Those backstabbers.. they hid from me!

Aug 12, 2156. BIG new sphere of influence, the Korh-Ah. And what happened to the nice Spathi? I don't see them anymore.. the Zok Fot Pilk are in danger, and I can't kill the Korh-Ah with my flagship.. I tried. What the heck do I do /now/?

*shivers* This isn't cool, no.. the Syreen are near to death, too.. how.. why.. *sigh*

Quick guide to get you started:

The quest is 'save humanity, contact aliens races, defeat the ur-quan hierarchy'.  You do have one, just no clear starting point.

But if you've been to pluto, you do have a good starting point.  Fwiffo, despite being the escort ship most frequently used by starcon players everywhere to kill just about anything, is a complete coward, and if you paid attention, he told you the exact co-ordinates of his homeworld, and the super-secret cypher.  Go talk to the spathi, and interrogate them for every useful piece of information they possess, and do their little quest.  Should give you some additional places to look.

Afterwards, enough time should've passed that the starbase commander should have recieved information that he'll give you upon your return to earth.  That should start the ZFP path, or give you a hint to where to meet the alien traders.

If at any point you find yourself completely out of things that seem to need doing, go buy information from those alien traders - they're so well informed, they're very close to omniscient.

Cheers, and good luck.  Oh, and don't expect to win the first time - it's quite common for the first playthough to end....badly.

Yes, I have been to Pluto, actually.. Smiley That little guy was freaky.. and I sold him off for the RUs. *blush*

I've talked to the ZFP's, and see their sphere of influence, as well as the Ilwrath's (impossible to kill with the flagship!), and the Spathi's. So I suppose I should be heading there (a year after I start.. whoops).

One thing this screwing around has done for me, though, is given me a decked out flagship.. hee.. Four ion cannons, three fuel pods, two crew bays, two dynamo's, and three storage bays.

Yeah, cookies in solar systems.. Wink

Ok. I've been mining for about a year. I can do cookies in solar systems and get from Sol to the Syreen homeworld in about 5 days. But I don't have a quest!! I don't have anything to do, because the Syreen havn't said anything to me and my commander won't tell me anything.

*sighs* First time playing, this game is confusing yes.

Played StarControl 1 for the Genesis, nice to see a version of StarControl 2 out that I can play in Linux. Smiley

This is sweet!! The voices are a very nice touch.. well done, all who helped on this. Smiley

PS: Never read the boards if this is your first time playing something.. Wink They tell you too much. Wink
