31  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Question to the Devs on: January 31, 2007, 03:12:20 am
To date nobody's found any fatal bugs in 0.6.2, so with luck we won't be releasing for awhile.  0.6.1 and 0.6.2 both exist because of instantly fatal problems in the immediately previous version.

We haven't decided yet whether we're going to do regular micro-releases on the way to 0.7 or not.

If my Ancient Greek is up to snuff, "Xenoteratomorph" -- the name they gave it, just means "Alien Monster Thing".

The voice processing for that speech is gold as well.

(I also recommend trying this with the Syreen Shuttle, idly, if you haven't.)

If you intend to play the game directly, the best choice is probably "Release", not "Release - NoAccel", since Release uses MMX/SSE for the graphics code.

You can also override sound settings with commandline options:

uqm --sound=mixsdl

Will restore original behavior, and visiting and leaving the setup menu will preserve the changes.
35  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Installer suggestion on: January 26, 2007, 04:34:45 am
Logic has been added to the Win32 installer to do the rename if necessary, so this should work in 0.6.2's installer.  If it doesn't, please let me know.
36  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Breaking the Kohr-Ah on: January 18, 2007, 09:39:13 am
Ships that can beat a jugger:
Chenjesu - disables shields with DOGIs
Orz - clever marnine deployment essential - easy againt AI not so sure about player
Melnorme - disables shields with special function thingie (remind me what its called)

Note that a good Jugger pilot can gun down DOGIs before they close, but in doing so, he's not closing on the Broodhome itself.  It's a more even battle than you'd expect.

Also useful vs. Jugger are craft that can ping for single points of damage or launch fake-out attacks.  The Supox and the Mmrnmhrm in Y-Form each ping for one point of damage; a successful shielding of their attack will usually consume at least two fuel units from the Utwig.  Once the Utwig is at zero fuel, it's all over but the shouting.  Imprecise homing attacks like the Earthling (or, again, Mmrnmhrm) -- firing for near-miss -- can fake the Jugger pilot into shielding unnecessarily.  Keep that up enough and anything that can outrun and outrange will wipe the floor with it.

I haven't done experiments with the Shofixti yet, but I think it doesn't quite have the necessary range.
37  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Graphics fix for Matrox in 0.6.0? on: December 25, 2006, 04:17:15 am
Yergh...

Is this yet another post 0.6.0 bug fix?

No, which is why it's not in SVN yet -- we have enough trouble with bugs that are already present without doing sudden major changes to core systems.  It's just that the graphics backend in general has been due for rewriting since 0.3 (in order to make fixes to things like Bug #455 not be nightmares) but it's hasn't been a priority for quite a while.
38  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Graphics fix for Matrox in 0.6.0? on: December 23, 2006, 08:23:42 am
If this is Bug #914, apply this patch to the 0.6.0 source before remaking the patch or it will become near-instantly obsolete again.
39  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Music in 0.6 on: December 22, 2006, 08:15:50 am
I also noticed that there are no longer UQM directories or files, in the Documents and Settings directory.

That sounds fairly ominous.  When you do the report, can you give the beginning of the stderr.txt log that indicates where saved games etc. go?
40  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Mycon related to the Taalo? on: December 22, 2006, 02:51:19 am
One of the Mycon rambles is somebody else saying: "... planetary transformer biot 94-18: take your place at the transporter dais..."

I'm not sure if it's absolutely canon that they're a Precursor planetary transformer biot, but given that the Pod of Juffo-Wup is identified by Solbase as a Precursor tool, it seems to be at least a vaguely reasonable guess.
41  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Control Pad for Ur-Quan Masters on: December 22, 2006, 02:43:11 am
Er, yes.  UQM goes through the OS's general input layer on its own, so if Windows doesn't see a joystick (or Linux doesn't see /dev/js0 or whatever) UQM won't see anything.  The console dump at the very start of the program will list what joysticks the OS is reporting.
42  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: keys.cfg help on: December 21, 2006, 08:03:45 am
For that specific version of keys.cfg,  take all the references to "joystick 1" on the right-hand side of the colon and "Player-1" on the left-hand side and change the "Player-1" to "Player-2".  I think that should cover it.

UQM is written (almost) entirely in C, and only touches assembler when it's doing graphics scaling.  All I/O is handled via the SDL libraries, which we don't deal with at all.  I suspect the Xbox's input regime looks a lot like DirectX's DirectInput libraries, though.
43  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Control Pad for Ur-Quan Masters on: December 21, 2006, 08:00:05 am
An added note -- there's a known issue in that starting UQM *without* the controller plugged in will scramble or obliterate the joystick configurations.  You can get the default config back by going up one directory from the savegames (which should be linked in with your Start Menu) and deleting keys.cfg.  A fresh copy will be created the next time you start.
44  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Control Pad for Ur-Quan Masters on: December 21, 2006, 07:57:35 am
(a) Have your controller plugged in before starting UQM.
(b) Start UQM.
(c) Go to Setup.
(d) Go to Configure Controls.
(e) Change Player One to "Joystick 1".
(f) Optionally, select "Edit Controls", pick "Joystick 1", and remap the buttons for fire, thrust, and special by selecting them, pressing ENTER, and then hitting the button you want at the dialog box.
(g) Repeatedly hit SPACE until you get back to the Main Menu.

At this point you should be good to go.
45  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: 0.6 crashes on: December 20, 2006, 01:48:59 am
Hum.  I managed to scare up a PS2->USB converter and thus try it with a joystick, and it's not crashing there either.  Another possible stab in the dark: You don't still have old content updates from CVS snapshots floating around, do you?

Also, on this Athlon 2800+ XP I'm looking at about 25% CPU usage from the main menu.

Also, all early adopters should do an MD5 sum check on their installers using a utility such as http://www.md5summer.org -- we had a showstopper bug report after an upload of the installer but before release, and the patched version may not have reached all mirrors yet.
