1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Mysteries of the Star Control Universe... theories much appreciated! on: June 19, 2009, 07:37:01 pm
Races in SC2 tend to not know much about other races beyond their immediate neighbours.
Not much suggests that the Mycon are new to the area. We only know for sure that they (relatively) recently found the Syreen homeworld and destroyed it (Some time before SC1).

The only thing that might suggest that the Mycon are new is the following logic:
If the Mycon were created by another race that had hyperspace technology, then the Mycon had hypersace since the day they were made.
If they have memories from 50,000 years ago, then they were made AT LEAST 50,000 years ago.
If they had 50,000 years to find worlds suitable to their deep children, why didn't they find Syra sooner.
But if they are new to this sector, then it explains it.

Other options are:
1) The Mycon were created by a race without HS tech. They only developed it recently. (Means they are not Precursor constructs, their creators had advanced biology knowledge but not as advanced physics).
2) The Mycon didn't turn life bearing worlds into shattered worlds until recently. This fits with theories that this is some kind of problem with them, and not part of their original design.

I'm not going this discussion again, but I just wanted to poitn out that if the Kohr-ah are good at record keeping, then they know about the Slylandro.

The brown Ur-quan have met the Slylandro in the distant past. Just FYI. Smiley
3  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: There's something wrong with this forum... on: June 12, 2009, 06:54:03 pm
From the topic title I expected the thread to either be a complaint about the forum, or a post in the spirit of "Dark Forces are gathering, I can feel their malice in the bones!". I really didn't expect tech issues.  Tongue

P.S - I know the post is totally unhelpful for the thread, but it looks like the original purpose of it has been achived.

Enhanced strategic game will be great.
The ability to play it over the net is, of course, the most obvious and the bestest enhancement.

A special ability to each ship will also be great (right now the only "spcial abilities" are the Arilou's ability to pass fortifications and the Ur-quan's ability to singlehandedly destroy them, IIRC).

And then add the SC2 ships...
*sigh*, yeah, I've been dreaming about that thing for a while now.
Hopefully Dragon's remake will answer my wishes, becase it'll be a while before I can try making my own version. And even then it'll only be 2D images salvaged from existing things.
5  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Don't forget the Mmrnmhrm on: June 12, 2009, 12:59:48 am
Meh, I prefer the Chenjesu to be naturally evolved.

But if they were not, then we have even more (!) unnatural races around. And ALL of them are attributed to the Precursor? No thanks.
Besides, compared to the Mycon (and Chenjesu and Taalo, if you MUST) the Mrn are not impressive at all.
It is quite possible that the Ur-quan, Melnorme and Arilou all have the technology required to constructed a race such as the Mrn. Therefore it is very plausible that another race of a similar tech level created the Mrn, and not the Precursors.

At the end, none of it is cannon (even the Chenjesu and Taalo origins) so right now it's all a matter of taste and personal preferences.

The only "advantage" I see in having so many unnatural races, is that it explains why space in the SC universe is so teeming with sentient life - other, more ancient races put them there.
Meh, I still don't like it.  Tongue

Dragon, those problems with vertices and JNI, that's just because you use 3D rendering right?
If someone were to use 2D images for the game's graphics, Java would've been fine?
7  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Don't forget the Mmrnmhrm on: June 10, 2009, 11:12:26 pm
I don't see what's wrong with the idea that the Precursors created the Mrnrnmhrm. Sure, they disappeared 20,000 years(?) ago, but the disappearance was of the "went somewhere else" type rather than the "became extinct" type. It's perfectly conceivable that they may be still alive somewhere else in the galaxy (or in some other galaxy, or even in a QuasiSpace-like place).

The Precursors disappeared 300,000 years ago (or 200,000, but I'm pretty sure its 300,000).
At any case that's MUCH more then 1,000.
Also, that's not my main gripe with the idea of the Mrn being Precursor creations.
It's more of a case of "wow, yey, that's original. MORE precursor leftovers". That's especially true after SCnot3, in which EVERYTHING was made by the Precursors.
Lets just have some original things around, PLEASE. Smiley

Apart from the Evil Ones, those aren't constructed races. Rather, they are modifications of existing races. The only intelligent constructed races are the Mrnrnmhrm, Chenjesu(?), and Mycon.

You say Potato, I say Potato Smiley
None of them are natural in any case (natural - created without intervention by intelligent beings).
Also there is absolutly nothing that hints that the Chenjesu are constructed.

P.S - you can add the Chmmr to the list of un-natural races, I forgot them earlier.

I'm really glad the project doesn't use UQM's code and graphics.
Better graphics and more angles for ships rocks.

But that's just me Smiley
9  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Half-breeds in SC? on: June 09, 2009, 02:02:40 am
In one of the earlier TW ideas for a visit to an alternate reality (that was half a joke from the start) a Shmmr was suggested.

I always liked that idea though. What if the Mrn chose to merge with the Shofixti? Smiley
Shmmr!

I know I'm only a very new programmer (fresh out of a C# and JAVA course) but it is a bit discouraging that I have NO idea what you are talking about most of the time.

What's a vertex? what's a vertices?
What's JNI? GNU? GCJ?

Should I be bothered that I don't know what all those things mean?
And most of your previous posts?
11  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Is this a bad thing? (personal) on: May 29, 2009, 12:08:57 pm
I think asking an online forum with an assortment of random people is not the right approach to such matters.

Better have a talk with your dad. Smiley

Why C++ and not C# or Java if you want to avoid memory leaks?
Garbage collectors are just for that, aren't they?
13  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Sadomasochism (sadistic people) on: May 27, 2009, 08:01:18 pm
The poll's first option says "sadistic people" which was a bit confusing.
Anyway I voted now (second option).

As for what you said. I think people sometimes confuse fantasies (sexual and other) with what people really want to HAPPEN.

For example, fantasizing about something horrible happening to someone you hate does NOT mean you really want it to happen to him.
Same goes to all types of fantasies, including the sexual ones.
Same in the case of BDSM, I assume (and I should mention that everything I say here is IMO and I'm no expert). One fantasises about raping or abusing, the other fantasises about being in the reciving ends. It does not mean that they want it to happen for real.

P.S - no time for spell checking, sorry if it shows...
14  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Sadomasochism (sadistic people) on: May 27, 2009, 01:27:29 am
So the poll is about the sexual habit, or the mental disorder that get people hurt badly against their will?

Because I'm find with badly hurting people against their will, but I'm against consensual sexual activities that are not the most basic form of intercourse and are aimed for procreation.

And for those who don't get it when I'm joking (there are always a few of those around) - I'm fine with people doing whatever they want with eachother as long as both parties want it and no one ends in the hospital.
I'm against harming people against their will. Or even harming people when they do want it (and I mean injury causing, not some hot candle wax games that they enjoy).

So right now I still don't know how to vote. Need clarification,
15  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Don't forget the Mmrnmhrm on: May 27, 2009, 01:16:10 am
Only what I said in the first post.
The Mother Ark arrived here about 1,000 years ago and begun building Mrn until it stopped.
They have a mission but they won't tell what it is.
The Ur-quan are mildly impressed with their tech level (which rule out Precursor origin IMO, even if you somehow ignore the fact that the Precursors disappeared 200,000 years ago, and the Mother Ark arrived to this sector only 1,000 years ago).

The Mrn story is therefore open for almost anything. Which is perhaps a bit of deterrent for people who prefer to build upon existing material.
