1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: first star control memories on: May 01, 2003, 11:16:32 pm
1991. I was in my Computer Science course in high school. A relatively new course, and the teacher was kinda playing it by ear. Hence we had plenty of downtime.  We had a 286 in the classroom, and the first part of the year, us guys would huddle around and play Spacewars (if you're unaware, this is the game that inspired SC).  Then, later that schoolyear, someone brought in Star Control.  It was like playing Spacewars with lots of plastic surgery and steroids. We loved it. Our classwork suffered greatly to the point where the teacher, though he loved the game too, had to ban it.
2  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / General questions on: April 27, 2003, 01:16:45 pm
Hello,

I just finished the game, which brought back many fond memories of when I first finished it all those years ago.  But I'm left with a couple of questions.  Maybe some of this is explained in the ending, but since there is no ending (yet?), I'll just ask away:

1) The significance of the Rainbow Worlds is...? I guess it's just a big arrow pointing to where the Precursors went off to? I don't remember Star Control 3 at all (played it, finished it, didn't like it, and promptly forgot everything that happened in it), so was this answered in that game?

2) What's the Burvix Caster for? I don't think I ever used it.

3) What happens if you let the Thraddash go off and attack your enemies?  Unfortunately, I don't have a savegame near that point, so I can't try again w/o a lot of replay.

4) Explain to me how a seemingly feeble race such as the Zoq Fot Pik manage to survive within Ur-Quan space?  If the Ilwrath and the Thraddash can mutually destroy each other in a matter of weeks, how can a race with a sphere of influence of a handful of stars keep ticking?

5) Can you actually get yourself into a no-win situation and not really realize it until much later? Like say, you attack every single race, making an enemy of everyone, but you still need stuff from them?

6) I suppose I could look in the source code for this, but I'm sure someone knows... how many systems, planets, and moons are there in the game? Smiley

Thanx for all the help guys. Yeah, I'm pretty sure the 3DO version does not state where Juffo-Wup is. Same goes for the location of Syra.  I remember playing the PC version all those years ago and not having problems locating worlds (except perhaps Rainbow worlds, which took me the belated discovery of a ruler to figure out Smiley )

I'm kinda stuck here.

The Syreen told me to lure the Mycon to Organon. Ok, so I go to Beta Brahe I, tell them about Organon, then head on over to that system. But there's no one there on the closest planet.

What am I missing or what didn't I do?

Early on in the game, fighting the Slyandro was a bitch and a half. This is before your Precursor ship has sufficient turning+speed, upgraded cannons, or target tracking. You can beat it without any loss of life with a Spathi ship, but it's an extremely slow, methodical process.

Fighting the Mycon is a tad annoying since the AI is programmed to always stay as far away from you as possible.

Wow, I was about to pull my hair out before I found this thread. I don't recall having these difficulties when I played the PC game years ago. This time, I stumbled upon the Suppox by accident, and I had no idea they had the Ultron (I was trying for ages to get the Ultron out of the Utwig or to assemble an Ultron out of the 3 parts I had). Nothing in the 3DO version indicated the Supox had it.

Also, that little tidbit about where the Syreen homeworld is located is definitely not in the current version. At first I was searching all over the starmap for "Syra"; then I was systematically checking every star system near Betelgeuse, since I recalled they spent 75 years adrift after leaving Syra, so they couldn't have gone that far.

Two questions:

Was the Umgah homeworld ever mentioned? Again, this was a case of going through every system before finding it (luckily, it took me only four tries).

Someone above mentioned there's three egg fragments. Where did you find the info that indicated there were three?

Ok, I've done so.

The savegame I've attached also includes repeating "Shofixti have returned" message.
8  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Spathi / Starbase Commander message on: April 24, 2003, 02:30:34 am
I wasn't sure which forum to take this to, for I don't know if this is a glitch or I'm not doing something right.

I'll first say that this game sure brings back fond memories, spending hours upon end exploring star systems and beating up those Kohr-Ah. Actually, I think I still have my *cough* pirated *cough* copy of Star Control 2 for the PC somewhere. heh.

Anyway, so I visited Epsilon Gruis, made friends with the Spathi, then a couple weeks later, they disappeared, and I got the Umgah Caster from the moon. It's been well over a year of game-time, but I'm still getting the "We have a major situation!" message from the Starbase Commander. Other messages have come and gone, but that one's persistent. Why's that? What am I missing?
