Because they were never shown anywhere... there was some talk about a proposed "races" section on the 'new' PoNaF, so that was more or less the intended target, but of course that never materialized.

Good ones Kwayne, proper oldskool!

Might as well drop this old stuff here Smiley

Still using FF3 so can't test this - although I do get music, and a nice-looking playing field with two Mycons (all 100% static).

Serious question from an amateur who's only ever dabbled with Flash:  what makes HTML5 (in particular) so good for web games?  Isn't most of the nitty-gritty actually done in Javascript?  How steep is the learning curve if one is already familiar with ActionScript?  Do evangelize. Wink

Yep.  Although there are other strategies available if you get creative - you can go the "i failed teh spelling bee lol" route ("Digg", "Reddit"), for instance.
5  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: UQM 0.7.0 release candidate 2 on: June 04, 2011, 09:17:56 pm
Not yet; there is something else going on right now. I will not go into details until we are sure. One of the problems with the reconstructions is that there is more Mycon dialog which is not covered.

Interesting - might have a look at the dialogue differences again, I'd love to try my hand at more of these some time anyway.

All other considerations are up to you and the team, but there's always the option of an add-on (credit to Anym - thanks man).

new content from TFB.

already makes this version awesome.

- Added the missing bits to the no-voice versions of Mycon, Syreen and Utwig dialogue

So do the texts in question reflect the original PC version now?  I've posted my "reconstructions" of the missing Mycon audio elsewhere on this forum, a couple of years ago I think.  Perhaps now they could be considered for inclusion?

Also, what about the Melnorme "MetaChron" dialogue?

Given the stupid current trend for gibberish brand names, I'm surprised that Star Control hasn't presaged every other big name on the internet these days.
To wit:

Wooxie
Hulu
Frengo
Skype
Yuku
Noovo
Vevo
Meemo
Bing
Wakoopa
Thoof
Wixi
Kijiji

Tell me that this doesn't read just like the list of captain names for a new alien species in the SC universe.
I guess they'd be kind of like the Druuge, but with even more worthless gadgets on offer.  A few melee characteristics:

SHIP:  changes its own design every two seconds.
PRIMARY WEAPON:  live streaming content delivery for 4 HP/frame.  Charges enemy credit card.
SECONDARY WEAPON:  "socially networks" with enemy ship.  For 30 seconds, all enemy controls result only in status updates and "like"s.

....what do you think? I think it's TRENDING!

turns out I don't have that one Wink. Perhaps on my laptop though.. Remind me to check that.

....Reminding you to check that  Smiley

Nobody else?
9  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Starcon: TimeWarp: Gob update on: July 04, 2010, 03:12:24 pm
(Excuse the thread necromancy)

Does anyone happen to have the latest .exe that orz_tw had posted?  The version hosted by Gekko above has the 26-Oct-2008 executable, which is what I have, and this doesn't include all the new ship upgrades / tweaks / additions.
See the date on orz_tw's post below - I assume that this newer executable should be dated December 2008, so if anyone happens to have it and can host or send it somehow, it would be much appreciated.

update:
You can get 99% of the changes with just the new exe:

10  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Star Control series (I, II, III) on: June 28, 2010, 07:41:35 pm
I think that "standard" Amiga video modes were limited to 32 colors (=5bpp) around SC1's release, while the PC version supported 256-color VGA, so there's indeed a decrease in color depth but it's only really apparent when vieweing the ship info screens.  The rest of the game rarely ventures beyond 16 colors anyway.

Sound was superior on the Amiga of course, but the Alliance had cooler victory music on the PC IMHO Smiley
11  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Activision & Toys for Bob on: June 18, 2010, 09:09:35 pm
That King's Quest fan project wasn't called 'King's Quest', either; in the presented material it was merely called 'The Silver Lining'.  Didn't stop Activision from burying it.

Then again, if they had a way to strangle SC-related fan projects they most probably would have done so already, so I feel more optimistic for the simple reason that it hasn't happened yet.  Maybe a subtle difference in intellectual property status between these two cases; a lawyer I am not.

The damn shame in all of this is that Activision can't be sued for infringement for stealing their entire corporate philosophy from the Crimson Corporation.
12  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Precursors, Precursors where art thou? on: June 18, 2010, 07:05:23 pm
Hmmm.
Several remixes released by The Precursors were actually submitted by other people - on invitation by The Precursors team.  Chmmr (by yours truly),  Shofixti and Utwig at least, though I could be wrong.

If the team members have lost interest in the project (which I understand and can empathise with... I know all about losing steam when something is 95% complete Grin) - why not open the Syreen remix for outside submission as well, perhaps a contest?  Just for the sake of having a complete package.
13  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Activision & Toys for Bob on: June 18, 2010, 06:53:11 pm
If you want sequels, you'd be better served watching the fan projects being made around here and at SCDB.  Those will most certainly be more faithful to the game we love, and even with the risk of of not being finished due to author delinquincy (an ever-present threat in the fan-made community) I still think there's an infinitely greater chance of seeing these sequels come to pass than anything "official" out of Activision.

Take a look at the linked article.  Especially what it says under February 28, 2010: Activision has actually terminated a non-commercial fan project with a cease-and-desist.
Who's to say that future Star Control fan projects are safe?
14  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: What does Star Control II lack? on: June 11, 2010, 06:31:49 pm
Other ways of gathering resources (in the beginning stages), rather than just mineral-hunting.  From what I've seen, this is the only part of the game that new players tend to find somewhat tedious.
For example, different "mini-games" other than planet landing; aliens sending you on potentially dangerous side-quests for minerals/money; or even multiple variations on the "Druuge fuel trick" theme.

Sylandro Probes

Waiting for them to spawn randomly isn't very interesting either.  Plus, for new players, it takes a while before you get strong/experienced enough to actually gain some sort of steady cash flow from Probes.
15  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Aalib with version 0.6.2? on: June 11, 2010, 06:21:35 pm
I dunno..... I mean, it's nice and all, but II tend to prefer the ANSI build.

Wow, how do you do that? Is that a mod of some sort, or just some obscure compile option?

Haha.... just http://picoe.ca/products/pablodraw/ , I'm afraid, and then some window border/title forgery.
