I'm saying nah to more in-game options unless it's absolutely necessary or brilliant.
And there really doesn't need to be an in-game option for something that can be easily added by putting the file in along side the remixes.

Actually, yeah, it's quite perfect as is. I hadn't looked into the mod in detail when I made the observations: Erroneously assumed every feature you had was going into in-game options, such a silly camper Tongue But no, it's far better these extra things go on the installer.

I see the projectile weapons just fine on all three different resolutions

On a large monitor, yes. On smaller ones it kinda makes you squint at times.
Notably:
  • Syreen's particle beam
  • Scout's energy dart
  • Eluder's B.U.T.T. torpedoes
  • Mauler's sniper bullet
  • Stinger's anti-matter particles

All I was saying is some projectiles could probably have benefited from being either larger (without affecting hitboxes), colored more brightly, or given a thin white outline (to more easily stand out against the black background). Just a very minor gripe with the original game!

End of transmission.

There are two things wrong with this. It's true that English has a lot of loan-words, but I think 50% is probably pushing it a bit.

I am of course generalizing when I say 50%. Do notice, however, than in just your two "English" paragraphs above there were 30 Latin words: probably, simplest, language, sense, possible, select, depends, partly, simpler, inflections, example, minimal, influence, tone, present, verb, distinctions, possibly, cases, related, location, emphasized, syllable, minor, effect, function, complex, certain, system, point. (And I wasn't counting repeats.) All of which are practically indistinguishable from Spanish, as one would naturally expect.

Even if it was 1/3rd or even 1/4th, the Romanization of Europa and subsequently the entirety of America is nothing less than absolutely enormous. And it's not just language, but culture: from holidays like "Christmas" to mainstream sciences (the very name gives it away: psychology, biology, astronomy, etc), to the ABC/alphabet to wedding ceremonies and funerary rites, to the calendar itself (12 months a year, 7 days a week, the BC/AD nomenclature), all the way to the clean-shaven military haircuts imposed on males and the fact that the 1 dollar bill declares "IN GOD WE TRUST". I could go on. Even "atheists" can't escape it. Ah, the irony.

More importantly, English is not the easiest or simplest language in any sense, and furthermore, it's probably not really possible to select an easiest or simplest language since the ease of learning a new language depends at least partly on one's first language.

Partly? Sure. But more importantly: it depends primarily on one's resolution above all. If you have a "knack" for tongues, it comes even easier (especially when you start to see how it all connects etymologically). All you have to understand is (Central) Europa is composed of primarily 3 language branches: Latin (producing Italian, Spanish & Frankish/French), Germanic (which English is the "bastard" of) and Slavic (Russian, Polish, Ukrainian being the primary examples)—all of which were "conquered" by the Holy Roman Empire all the same. Thus, if you at least know 2 of these, learning a third becomes exponentially simpler. And I'll maintain English is still the easiest.

For what it's worth: I've been teaching English & Spanish (primarily) to people of different linguistic backgrounds, and English was exponentially easier to pick up than Spanish in every case (sure, a "true Latin" language like French would probably be easier to a Spanish speaker due to familiarity, than a "half Latin" language like English). But once it "clicks", you realize English is far less complicated and much more simpler than "true Latin" languages.

This is all I was merely attempting to convey. Don't mean to bicker or squabble!

And just to be clear: I'm not here to glorify the Tower of Babble. Au contraire! I was drawn to etymology long ago because I had a "knack" for it to begin with, and because this "confusion of tongues" just irritated me beyond reason (because it makes people think they are actually different and unrelated when they are not—and differences lead to pride, discordance and ultimately bellicosity; figuratively or otherwise), so I just wanted to topple down the aforementioned Tower, to watch it crumble and fall away. Life is simple after all, like math, like truth, like beauty. I'd rather have us coalesce everything into just one global language so that eventually it too may be outgrown in favor of telepathy and a true (finally) Unified World. Wink

Apologies for dealing the thread, llamaparlante!

Signing off now.

@Orz?
I can definitely make an alternate remix pack with just those two songs. I won't even have to change any code.
The package will work even on other versions of UQM that use the Remix packs.

Right, it's nice to have that (uqm-remix-disc2) around as a separate add-on/downloadable for those who don't know how to manually swap the files. However, I was suggesting you could have it as an in-game option alongside all the other extra features (after all, it's minimal enough as to not make a huge impact: just 2 tracks). Or at least, there should probably be some dedicated list somewhere of external add-ons compatible with the game. Same goes for them orange-peel Melnorme Tongue Kinda like how you have old Kohr-Ah and new Korh-Ah ships available (I know one can just simply drop the old HQ Melnorme "comm" .png's into your mod, I'm only trying to simplify everyone else's lives here; since I heard others expressed a certain fondness for the orange-peel Melnormes).

Don't mean to overstep my bounds, it's your project. Just take these suggestions as potential improvements to the mod Wink

On a totally different note: I always felt what would really help Super Melee is if projectiles were recolored in a more contrasting way against the pitch-black starry background of space. Many projectiles are too difficult to see and easy to miss because of this (especially the super tiny ones). Alternatively, they could be given a white outline and that would probably resolve the issue.

Thoughts?

As a multi-lingual speaker and etymologist, I honestly wouldn't worry about the special characters being an absolute necessity in the subtitles. Except for the word "año" (year) being written as "ano" (anus) nothing else would stand out remotely as jarring (albeit humorously so). Most Spanish-speaking people don't even accentuate words nowadays, especially online, and most languages don't even expressly use textual accents despite words being nonetheless accentuated in actual speech. Spanish would be a much easier language without them Wink

As for voice-overs, I'd personally advocate against it: leave it in its native tongue (same reason any other work in French, Greek, Japanese or what-have-you, should be left undubbed and only subtitled at best). This is not only to save you a massive amounts of work, but because much is lost in the dubbing process (tone, inflection, characterization, etc).

Besides, most people know English nowadays. And if they don't, they should/will  Tongue

Anyway, lemme know if you need any input on the project (like spellchecking the entire game or whatever).

PS: Not advocating English as the "master language", don't get me wrong! If it was up to me, we'd be all speaking Latin (which Spanish is a "child" of, and English is 50% made of thanks to Holy Roman Empire conquest of Europa and subsequent spread to America). I'm just saying English is already widespread, and most (young) people nowadays are either taught or end up learning it one way or another (it's the easiest/simplest language too, after all).
5  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: My take on Stardock on: January 12, 2018, 08:28:38 pm
All I'm gonna say is this:

Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars flopped. The devs didn't seem to "get it" in terms of what made the originals (particularly Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares) so appealing (mechanically and otherwise) as to stand the test of time after so many years. They didn't even come close. They thought "if we make it a Hollywoodesque/Disney-like 'cinematic' experience with the likes of Luke Skywanker and other sci-fi Star Wreck 'legends' contributing their voice-overs to it... everyone would surely loooove it, nostalgics and newcomers alike, and we're gonna make lotsa, lotsa money!"

Civilization: Beyond Earth, the alleged "spiritual successor" to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, also flopped. Didn't hit the mark. Faaaaaar from it. Heart was in the wrong place. It was basically just a "skin mod" for Civ 5 in an attempt to milk money from all those nostalgics. Yeah, sure, you could argue the X-COM reboot, on the other hand, didn't flop. But as far as I could tell: it had nothing whatsoever of X-Com: UFO Defense in it save the brand name. It could be a "massive success" for all I care, but not because they slapped the X-COM brand on it. (For what it's worth, OpenXcom is the real "successor" here. By a long, looooong stretch.)

Likewise, the upcoming System Shock reboot and prequel (?), will likely flop too. Because of the same marketing gimmick: "let's turn the game into a Hollywood/Disney interactive movie"! That, and twisting SHODAN into yet another softporn, eye-candy female villain cuz "that will surely sell!" After all, you gotta have at lest one hyper-sexualized female character nowadays, right? (For those who don't know what I'm talking about: SHODAN was an artificial intelligence referred to as both an "it" and even a "he" in the original game—no genders attached.)

And so, unfortunately and regrettably (but not surprisingly or unexpectedly) Star Control: Origins will... probably also flop. Once again, the devs seem to have their hearts in the wrong place: profit over creativity, and flashy 'Michael-Bay' visuals over gameplay, character & story first and foremost. They focus so much on the "skin" that it ends up being a completely "soulless" product by the time it's released—an imitation and mimicry at best. Yet a cash-cow to be milked dry all the same, even if for only "5 minutes of fame".

Bottom line is this: the gaming industry is not the same as it used to be. It has lost its former "innocence", sad as it may be. It's basically the new Hollywood/Disney now, purely driven by greed and profit. And in this age of "nostalgic revival", they will psychologically prey on the weakness because they understand "nostalgia equals easy, safe, risk-free money" in their cold, calculating schemes.

It doesn't matter if these game are shit in the end, because they know people will still click that big, bold "BUY ME" button as they frantically drool "TAKE MY MONEY!" at the screen, like mindless zombies. Yes, these game will probably still appeal to the 15-year old audiences of today who will have a "touch n' go" with them and jump to the next flashy game right afterwards. Save for a few exceptions, video games are just not made for the same reasons anymore.

No, nowadays gaming studios are all about (a) maximizing profit by (b) appealing to the widest audience/demographic (wanky teens to old dicks) whilst (c) making the game as addictive as possible (hence the pervasiveness of "microtransactions", "loot-boxes", "season passes", "DLCs", and so on, in every major triple-A title). They are essentially creating virtual slot-machine casinos disguised as video games. And I can't support that kind of psychological exploit.

So although I may not "like" Zelnik's tone either, I understand where they are coming from. (Blizzard died after Warcraft III when it sold its proverbial soul to the devil and joined the "We're In It For The Big Fat Bucks" club alongside Disney, Microsoft, EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Capcom, Rockastar, et al).

But they aren't worst than those who continue to click that big, bold, "BUY ME" button. No, the biggest culprit here is the consumer who continues to consume the product they are being sold—and the addicts that defend their vice.

After all, they do say "don't bite the hand that feeds", right?

Apologies if any this comes off as too harsh or abrasive; just some raw, undiluted, brutal honesty!

It's just an internet forum, don't take too much offense for it! Wink

Food for though!

(Didn't bother reading the entire thread/topic, but got the gist of it, so probably shouldn bother replying to this post as it is not meant to initiate or perpetuate any kind of flame war.)

EDIT: Perhaps it wasn't the most clever idea to drop this post amidst such animosity. So I'll just add this: should we be having this conversation face-to-face, everything would reveal itself to be said in a much more amicable (and why not, humorous) tone than it otherwise may appear at first glance over the impersonal "wall" that is the interwebs Smiley

6  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: The MegaMod 0.8.0 has finally arrived! on: January 12, 2018, 06:24:17 pm
Created a topic a couple years back about swapping 2 particular tracks from the Precursor remix project that, I felt, didn't quite capture the original vibes. So I replaced them for more faithful adaptations (also by the Precursors, but oddly not part of the remix packs used in game). So I'll just drop this here for whoever's interested...

The 2 tracks in question (from Remix Pack 2: Neutral Aliens, Don't Shoot!) are:
- Hyperspace - Across the Galaxy (4:12)
- QuasiSpace - Through the Angles of Space (4:00)

And the replacements ("save link as" to download) are, respectively:
- Hyperspace - Lightyears Away (4:23)
- Quasispace - Mystic Shadows (3:53)

Perhaps Serosis might wanna consider adding them as part of optional/alternative content to the Precursors remix (otherwise replacement must be done manually).

PS: Although I mostly play in low-res graphics, gonna miss those orange-peel Melnormes!
7  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Utwig Dialogue Subtitles Fix? on: January 16, 2016, 04:34:25 pm
As I'm sure many of you already know, there are many dialogue/subtitle mismatches (and omissions) throughout the game: for the Ilwrath, Yehat, Dnyarri, Talana, etc.; but most noticeably, the Utwig.

Is there some fix for this laying around?

PS: Also, is version 8.0 coming out anytime? There's practically no updates anywhere.

8  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: How to change the UQM music remix package files? on: July 28, 2015, 07:14:36 pm
Thanks a lot, Justin Z!

It's all done.

And for anyone who may want to swap these two tracks, here you have them in ogg format:

Quasispace - Mystic Shadows (3:53)[

Hyperspace - Lightyears Away (4:23)

9  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / How to change the UQM music remix package files? on: July 10, 2015, 12:49:01 pm
Is there any way? I am talking about The Precursor remixes: http://www.medievalfuture.com/precursors/music.php

There's just 2 remixes I'd like to exchange. These are both from the Remix Pack 2 (Neutral Aliens, Don't Shoot!), namely:
1. QuasiSpace - Through the Angles of Space (4:00)
5. Hyperspace - Across the Galaxy (4:12)

I'd like to swap them with, respectively:
Quasispace - Mystic Shadows (3:53)
Hyperspace - Lightyears Away (4:23)

Both of these are alternate remixes listed under Additional Precursors Releases and, as such, are not part of the packages that are used for the actual game music. Unfortunately, these are much better (in my opinion) and far more faithful to the original versions and I'd really love to know how to swap them for the others. I'm sure it is possible, I just don't know how to do it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated <3
