Update - turns out the issue is that I don't have mikmod2 installed, and am unable to find a convenient way to install it (libmikmod3 is the current, no packages for libmikmod2 that I can find).

Annoying - I didn't even plan on running the game with sound.

The non convenient way for Ubuntu is to enable legacy trusty repositories, then:

You've probably figured it out by now, but there is a potential spyware tool residing at

/usr/share/uqm/uqm.autodlrc
which is invoked by
Code:
/usr/share/uqm/uqm-functions.sh
, which in turn is invoked the first time you try to run the game by normal means.

What this does is fetching the 0.7.0 files from sourceforge.

If you want the HD or Master Mod, you'll have to install manually.
