The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: UQM Mod

I've noticed something if you save on and UQM+ while travelling though hyperspace and then load it in UQM your ship "slides" meaning it travels but is facing the wrong dirrection. Odd, I'm curious as to why probably a slight difference in the coding of game saves as mods are no longer present and are certain ones you can't reactivate namly Probe multiplier and Ur-quan/Koar-ah Agression. Is there anyway (within reason obviously) to program the setup screen to prompt upon starting of a new game and to play a modified game without having to go to setup to restore your settings? What exactly do you mean? The options in "setup" are stored in the savegame and loaded with everything else. I don't see any point in forcing the setup screen when you start a new game, you can just as easily go to the menu yourself.

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: GPL?

The GPL is not really comparable with freeware and shareware, as they have different functions.
Freeware/Shareware distributions:
Freeware is software that is provided at no charge. Thus, it can be binary distributions of proprietary software, or it can include the source code under a particular license.
Shareware is software that is usually crippled in some way (eg. a limited time trial). The user then must purchase a license to receive the unlimited version of the software. Shareware is normally distributed as binaries.
Software licenses:
The GPL is a software license agreement. Software under this license must be distributed with the source code, including any derived works.
The LGPL is like the GPL but it allows for proprietary software. IE, derived software does not have to be distributed as source code.
The BSD license basically just requires people to include the original notes of copyright/ownership in redistributions.

I don't think the Precursors or the Rainbow Worlds have any significance regarding Orz. As for SC3, I wouldn't say people think of it as evil... more like, a bad game that shouldn't have happened. The story was not written by TFB, which is a definite minus, but the main thing is that the game was dull and uninspired. http://www.classicgaming.com/starcontrol/sc3/sc3www.shtmlThere are probably many other points you could add to that list. One of the game's two primary goals: "Find the cause of Inter-Dimensional Fatigue, and reverse it to restore Hyper Space travel" is already enough to warrant a red flag. IDF causing the collapse of hyperspace travel seems ludicrous. The plot was full of problems. All-in-all, none of the elements in SC3 stood out. It was poor as an adventure game, as a strategy game, and as an action game.

Yikes. The BSD license "less free"? Crazy.
Anyway, after some work, I managed to add a new race to the game. Incomplete, but still a working test implementation (in this case, the "Black Spathi Squadron", built with the original spathi stuff). One of the first things I did was add new devices to the game and that was easy. The difficulty options are also good to have.
What this means is, I have all the things I need to begin adding one or more new side quests. I could really use some help in this... with ideas, graphics, conversation, story, etc. etc. Basically, everything that could go into a new side quest.
Let me know if you're interested. My e-mail is lightman AT bluemail.dk

Michael: Thanks for the help in making the patch.
Zeep-Eeep: As Michael mentioned, I wanted to get the source cleaned up a bit. I hadn't posted it before because the source is likely to fluctuate and also because I wanted to reach a stage where I felt comfortable with a real release. I just put the .exe up in case anyone wanted to try it out as I was working on it.

For shame lightman; make him read the FAQ! In the original PC version they told you this, but because of the "voice pack" from 3D0, it's not getting put back into the conversations until a way can be found to have voices with the text. I'd suggest putting the extra conversations in the comm/*/*.txt files, but only show them when voice volume is set to 0. That way, both the 3D0 and PC versions are retained. Heh, the FAQ could use a little organizational work, but I'll try to keep that in mind. I don't really understand what the problem is, anyway. When I played the 3DO version, I had no trouble understanding what was going on.

Ok. I'd never used CVS before, but I just tried it out and I think I've got the hang of it. It might be optimal to try doing a merge from the current source (without replacing my changes) and then make a patch. I will also want to clean things up a bit... __int32 won't do, you know. Zeep-Eeep, I used the 20040208 CVS (v0.31)

Bwahaha: Thanks, that would be cool. As a temporary solution, the files are available here: http://www.freewebs.com/lightmanuqm/I'd like to see your menu, actually. That "setup" option is intended to eventually handle what eventually becomes the command-line options. Or is this just a variant of Paxtez's? I expected that the "setup" menu was going to be for that, I just needed something to work with at the moment. Try it out and let me know what you think. Paxtez's?

Yeah, the "Years to Kohr-ah victory" is just something I included since it was trivial. It might make the game harder... then again it might just mess things up. I need to find a place to host it... any suggestions? I'd better start looking...
