The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Static vs. Dynamic typing

I use a bit of both and I don't think there's a particular advantage of one or the other. That being said.... I find it easier to read other people's code in static-typing languages. Every so often one runs into a coder who likes to just throw in variables and make them do whatever is convenient at the time. That gets frustrating. It's bad enough if variable "abc" is used for different purposes, it gets worse is "abc" is a string at one point and a number later.

My biggest complaint about the Skift is probably warping into weird places.... like in front of the enemy's gun or into the planet. I like taking the SKift and fighting Druuge with it. Putting the planet between the two ships pretty much acts like a sheld while the Druuge runs out of battery.
My all round favourite is probably the Yehat's Terminator. It's speed isn't all that great, but I like it's thrust, the shields and the double-dose of death that comes out the front.

That is strange . I have had multiple occasions travelling in UQ space when I was ganged and after a while I'd loose my whole fuel supply ... Might be because my autopilot was on ?
That would probably do it. Every time you came out of a battle, the auto-pilot would likely use a small amount of fuel, trying to get you back on course. If you turn the auto-pilot off and just fight, it won't use any fuel.

Oh , and Zeep - if you're in hyperspace , the battles do drain your fuel .
No they do not. I just opened up UQM, flew into VUX space and went through about ten battles to see if it had any impact on fuel. No fuel was consumed sitting in hyperspace and blowing up enemy ships. Even warping non-flagship craft out of battle doesn't reduce fuel.

Maybe most people don't do it this way, but my solution is to avoid mining. Get just enough minerals in the Sol system and surrounding areas to buy a bunch of thrusters and fill your fuel tank. Then head to the right (in hyperspace) and meet up this the VUX. Your Eluder and Cruiser should be more than a match for the VUX ships. It'll take a while, but you'll quickly gain resources at virtual no cost (sitting still in hyperspace, waiting for VUX ships doesn't burn fuel). One or two trips will give you enough resources to complete many of the early-on missions.
I also make a point of selling most of the ships given to me, which provide extra RUs. Using these two methods means I rarely need to pick up minerals and makes the game go a lot faster.

I think it was just a look the artist liked. The ships all appear in the Super Melee portion of the game and I don't think it has any serious message for us. Though the Chenjesu were considered the head of the Old Alliance, I suppose the artist might have put them in for that reason. As I recall, the starbase commander sends you off looking for the Chenjesu if you ask for information about the various races.
