1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Ur-Quan and Syreen on: March 14, 2010, 12:45:52 pm
I think the Ur-Quan didn't kill the Syreen because their inflexible bureaucracy didn't allow for it. It's the same reason they wouldn't let the Spathi change their slave status once the decision was made even though it wasn't the Spathi's true decision.

The Ur-Quan are quite advanced but they're not perfect and neither is their system.
2  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Toys for Bob RSS on: August 16, 2009, 06:48:35 pm
What I was saying is I don't think Activision would think it wise to allow TFB to create a sequel to Star Control II, in favor of fresh new games with modern gameplay.
Just because the sequel is to an older game doesn't mean the gameplay of the sequel can't or won't be modern. SC2 was quite different in terms of gameplay than the first game, there's no reason a hypothetical third game couldn't follow suit.

You are asserting that a sequel would fail because most people haven't heard of its predecessors, while at the same time saying it can't succeed because it isn't "fresh" enough... despite most people not knowing about its predecessors. If so many people are unaware of the star control franchise then a sequel would be fresh to them, and to the fans it wouldn't matter anyway.  Whichever of your opposing assertions you're going with, good marketing and branding can bypass the problem anyway.

Maybe you are unaware that you are coming off as someone who is adamant that there will definitely never be a sequel and that you are just trying to bring everyone down to that level, but... I guess I find the idea that there might be a sequel someday to be a much more rational position to have than saying there definitely will or won't. Just an observation.
3  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Chenjesu on: October 04, 2008, 11:17:03 pm
I love reading the different ideas here. I don't really have anything original to contribute (I know I suck) but I'm pretty good at remembering the "lore" and reading this thread reminded me of a few things.

For one, the Chenjesu transmit and receive hyperwaves naturally so this would probably play an important role in communication.

I also came across the following in the IRC chat from long ago, fwiw:

<_Stilgar> <zenir> Q: how did the chmmr/taalo evolve.. especially to sentients?
<Fwiffo> Adaptation and evolution require the ability to change in response to the environment.  The Taalo and Chenjesu must either be the product of a previous culture, or they must be mostly software with some kind of field maniulation ability.

I wonder if any of the ideas presented in this thread would change that opinion?

I don't see any reason to think the Joker was telling stories about different scars
Yeah it was pretty obvious they were different stories about the same scars (the ones by his mouth). I like the idea that maybe he's not inventing stories so much as he literally does not remember it the same way twice!

Pretty great all around. I'll be buying the dvd when it comes out!
6  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: New Batman movie on: July 23, 2008, 07:23:13 pm
what makes you think he made up those stories? There wasn't really a hint of that, was there?
Well his different versions had parts that were contradictory, so one would assume he was inventing at least some details.

Edit: Thought the movie was amaaaaaziiiiiiiiing!
7  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: The Zoq-Fot-Pik Stinger is a great ship. on: May 15, 2008, 08:45:28 pm
Still just preference I guess, but I can beat a wider variety of ships with the Skiff than I can with a Stinger. But really this depends on the definition of "better" in this context. I still think the Skiff is a more effective ship, but that doesn't mean it is more cost effective (a point which I never disputed).
8  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: The Zoq-Fot-Pik Stinger is a great ship. on: May 15, 2008, 06:15:31 pm
I was with you right up until you said it's a better ship than the Skiff. Maybe I just suck at using the Stinger, but with an Arilou ship I can consistently take out Androsynth, Chenjesu, Mycon, Orz, Spathi, Supox, Syreen, Thraddash, Ur-Quan, VUX, and ZFP ships. I can much less often take out Mmrnmhrm, Umgah, Utwig, and Yehat ships. Granted some of these battles require a lot of patience or a little bit of luck, but human players always make mistakes and the AI is pretty easy to fool.

Although it's not my favorite ship I still have much love for the Skiff. =)

I actually get that...

I'm a big fan of her art, but it's hard not to pick up on certain things!

- You have a hopeless crush on Admiral ZEX, to the point where you sigh hopelessly about him and are loath to kill him for the sake of the Shofixti.
I...Is that you zarla?
11  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: A problem with the Hierarchy on: April 28, 2007, 01:08:41 am
Well we know that slaves get to decide their status by popular vote. Why would a species vote to be battle thralls if they're just going to end up being shielded anyway? Why help out the ones who conquered you if things will just end up being the same if you don't? If even limited autonomy is denied in the long run then there is no incentive to being a battle thrall. And the Ur-Quan don't seem to be the type to be deceptive about this since it conflicts with their philosophy (to lie is a sign of weakness).

The best explanation for the plothole would be that the Kzer-Za prefer to leave battle thralls in their local region of space and leave behind enough Dreadnoughts to support the infrastructure of their Hierarchy and to thwart slave revolts. This leaves the question of what those others are doing now that the Sa-Matra is destroyed and the Kohr-Ah death march ground to a halt.

Never thought of it like that, but it does fit...

13  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: flagship bounty hunter setup on: December 10, 2006, 09:32:21 pm
My battleship setup is pretty standard fare, I think, but it gets the job done pretty well.

2 hellbore cannons (front)
2 tracking modules
3 shiva furnaces
3 dynamos
1 point defense
3 crew pods
2 hi-eff fuel tanks

I could just as easily put 2 crew pods and 3 hi-eff fuel tanks as I dislike refueling and the time it wastes. But I think the 3 crew pods is important so I can keep my escort ships crewed if I need to while still giving me some wiggle room in case I really mess up and get hammered in a ship battle. Which doesn't happen very often, but sometimes all it takes is one mistake...
14  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Pkunk, Yehat Encounter on: December 05, 2006, 08:27:34 am
Or is there something in the text which indicates no friendly fire?
Nothing that I recall. I personally cannot imagine the Pkunk absorption as being completely bloodless, though I doubt the Pkunk would fire on the Yehat given the peaceful nature of their mission (and their general attitude towards the Yehat and Reunification). I seem to remember that if you ask the Yehat what happened to the Pkunk fleet, they give a rather terse reply indicating that the Pkunk have been absorbed and that is all they will say on the matter.

Don't remember if that bit is in UQM though.

Also, I can't resist linking to zarla's picture about just this event.
15  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Suggestions for SC (really) 3? on: October 22, 2006, 05:18:28 pm
I don't want to tell TFB how to do their jobs, but whatever it is, I know that they put their heart and soul into it...
I know it's fun to speculate and all, but this is really the best answer there is. The only thing I can add to it is if they do put their heart and soul into it like they did with SC2 I know it will be great. How could it not be?
