The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / SC Winamp Skin
|
on: May 02, 2009, 02:31:16 am

Years ago I had several star control winamp skins. One of my favorite was of the Vux ship. At anyrate I got nostalgic today.. and found that I no longer have any of these skins. After an hour of googling turned up empty, I thought I'd ask here if anyone has some of these skins (Vux would be especially awesome) laying around on their systems. This is of course going waay back, but hey you never know and it doesn't hurt to ask. If anyone has them please let me know if you would be willing to share, i would be extremely grateful!!!!

There was a pretty active Ascendancy community for quite some time. Â Last I heard, several players had begun work on moding the game and fixing some problems. Â There was even an enhanced playermade AI floating around for awhile (not the antagonizor AI released by Logic Factory, which wasn't bad either). Unfortunatly, Logic Factory (the makers) went completely missing in action. Â The main community was centered around their websites forum and a handful of websites. Â Logic Factorys forums eventually closed after a few years of silence from the developers and as far as I can tell most of the fansites died shortly thereafter. Logic Factory has recently redone their website, and are touting a sequel "in the works" Â a massively multiplayer online Ascendancy. Â Forums, hype and any new news other then a redone website is unfortunatly non existant for the time being. At any rate, maybe they'll be able to pull through. Â What was your favorite Ascendancy race btw? Â Mine was definatly Shevar. *Edit* I did some digging and did actually find a few remaining Ascendancy fan sites.. though it looks like they're on their last leg. At any rate, probably worth browsing for old times sake. http://www.ascendancy2.com/oldsite/ascend1/http://www.geocities.com/greyknight3/jmp_asc.htm

Starcon 2 (obvious) Civilization Command H.Q. Master of Orion Sundog: Frozen Legacy Ascendancy (Awesome MOO-like game) Midimaze (Before there was multiplayer doom, and before there was single player Wolf, they said "Let their be multiplayer first person frags.. and behold, there was Midimaze) Empire (multiplayer space empire game played on PLATO, not to be confused with Peter Langston's Empire, which is a different game) Now I feel old

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Super Melee (possibly in-game too) - Vux battl

The Vux ships do (usually) start next to you in the PC version of SC2 also, I can vouch for this. An example would be, when fighting a fleet of Vux ships.. After you have destroyed the a Vux ship, the next replacement is likely to warp in to battle on top of you. If the Vux ship destroys you however, your next ship will warp in at a random (I guess its random) spot and the Vux ship will be floating wherever it was when it destroyed your last ship.
When you destroy that Vux ship, odds are the next Vux to arrive will again warp in on top of you. They don't do this 100% of the time, but they do it often enough to where I would eventually have to return to starbase for crew. (In the PC SC2 I used to destroy Vux ships with a fleet of Spathi to farm resources, when they warp in on top of you, they are sometimes able to nail you for a second with their laser.)
I would like to say however, that I haven't really noticed the Vux ships warping in on top of me in UQM. Maybe once or twice, but it doesn't seem to happen nearly as often as in the PC SC2.

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Star Control 3?

I was totally unimpressed with SC3. I had actually gone to the store to buy an entirely different game the day I bought SC3. I had somehow missed that it had been released. I of course immediately bought it instead and rushed home. At the time I didn't know it was made by a different developer, all though I figured it out soon enough.
Maybe I was naive, expecting the game to remain somewhat true to the SC2 in format. Afterall SC1 and SC2 are very different, SC1 being more like a turn based strategy game/arcade combat and SC2 being RPG/arcade combat. But after a few minutes of play I immedietly disliked SC3. It reminded me of a a poorly done strategy game. A master of orion interface (though horrid in implementation) , mixed in many poorly done quests, unrealted storyline, horific combat engine and then removed any element of SC2 that made you feel connected to the game.. like you were actually exploring, or that you were the main character and instead replaced it with the point and click interface. Blah
Every few years I reinstall it, thinking to myself.. "Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance" or that "Maybe my expectations after SC2 were too high, and with all the time thats passed I can look at it as a different game" It never fails though, it was awful then and its awful now.
I always thought the idea of controlling colonies might be interesting for a SC2 sequel. But I would expect something more streamlined, with a much better interface. And most of all it shouldn't take away from the gameplay itself but add to it. Anyway don't mind me, once I get going about how horrible SC3 is its hard to stop.

I usually scavenge for minerals briefly and work on maxing thrusters right off the bat. I will also work on getting an extra crew pod or two and more fuel.
Other then that, my first priority is to make contact with the Spathi, and purchase a few extra Eluders. At that point I usually find it profitable to make a few trips to VUX space and exact some vengence on those cyclopsed tenticaled abominations. The Spathi Eluder is excellent at killing Vux Intruders and it doesn't take long to collect a large amount of resources from debris.
Just find a nice well populated system and start blasting. If an Eluder gets low on crew(which happens since Vux warp in on top of you usually), warp that Eluder out and replace it with a fresh one.. after the battle transfer more crew from the flagship and your good to go.
The Spathi Eluder is excellent at killing both types of Ur-Quan, and the Vux. And if flown right just as deadly against the Mycon, Umgah and Thraddash. It can out fight pretty much any old Heirarchy member. I usually stock up on several early on for use later in the game.

I've got the Starcon Collection that has 1&2 in it.. Box, manual and a CD with many lame Accolade demos which do not deserve a place on my beautiful Starcon CD. Unfortunatly I lost my starmap while showing a friend the game many many years ago. I imagine it is stashed away somewhere in the depths of his messy room.. which does me no good since I live on the otherside of the country now. Amen for the maps on the pages of now and forever.

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / No Yehat Text
|
on: December 06, 2002, 02:05:57 am

I'm get no dialogue text when speaking with the Yehat. I have voice speech disabled. I can still ask questions and make comments, but their replies aren't showing up on the screen.. all though it seems like the game thinks they are as I have to hit the right arrow key to scroll through them.

Yeah, the problem with the Spathi ship and the BUTT bombs is listed in the manual and here in the forums. Problem with the collision detection. I kinda hope someone has this particular problem has a priority, I have always used the Spathi Eluders as my fighting ships. They are especially effective against the Ur-Quan, and Vux, but I usually ended up relying on them to fight against most other races as well. (With a few exceptions) Not that its too terrible, forcing me to use less effective ships and definatly increasing the risk. Making the arcade portion challenging again. Still though, I miss my Eluders.
