This is a bug which is gone in the most recent versions, and has a workaround in older versions
The bug is: if you change the name of your captain or flagship, then you can't take off from planets or advance text when they transmit info to you for the rest of the game session.
Workaround: if you change the name of the captain or flagship, then save and quit, then relaunch and load the saved game. You should be able to take off again (press the key that backs out of menus).
