I just remember recently that there was a Ad  of Star Control 2 back in some 1993 or 1992 issue of Computer Gaming World the cover was preview of game Battlecruiser 3000 A.D which we know end up sucking like a tornado the ad had a melee screen fight between the Thaddash and Kohr-Ah and strangely enough the pic of the Kohr-AH captain was a brown Un-Quan but, unforuntely I threw out the magazine sometime ago

Well, while there WERE brown Ur-Quan, there aren't anymore... perhaps this was a forced change of plot due to budget restrictions?

Well, it's well known that the original Star Control 2 box on the back that the two ships that were fighting had the wrong captain pics prehaps Accodale marketing people get the pics messed up well, BTW I remember it was like that when the magazine was new also the graphic of the Un-Quan look somewhat different then the Kohr-Ah and had red eyes and strangely enough it caused a debate between my brothers about whatever the brown Un-Quan actually exist in the Star Control 2

prehaps the picture that I remember was concept art on the Kohr-Ah that P&F later abandon with one we are familar with can you Paul or Fred confimed this?

Speaking of beta screenshots, does anyone know what version of SC2 this screenshot is from? I spotted this in an article about classic games in the Finnish computer magazine Mikrobitti (January 2000 issue, give or take a few months).

My guess is that SC2 mutated somewhat during development (the expression "expanded like a blowfish with water retention" appears in a text file in the PC version), and a lot of reviewers got sent weird preview versions or something. That could account for the brown Ur-Quan as well.

I am hard-pressed to figure out what state of affairs would lead to that screenshot.
It was probably a mock-up.
Consider that
-your ship has NO MODULES yet 312 fuel.
-there is an indecipherable scribble where we'd expect the crew to be.
- the year is 2192 or 2102 or 2109... none of which are near the dates of the game (and some of which predate the first Ur-Quan war)
-you are saying that the presence of the Ilwrath is an act of war ¿on the part of the Syreen?...
On the whole, it looks like someone was having fun writing this one up... and it was not arrived at in the course of a game.

OMG, that's not the Alliance of Free Stars, that's the Sentient Milieu!  Wink

Ok, so maybe those pictures of the Yuli or Yuptar look amazingly like the Syreen, and actually "Syreen" and "Druuge" were codenames for different Milieu races... and maybe they had a different system of keeping track of years...  and... Grin

It's also possible that SC2 actually looked like that at some stage of development. The text file supplied with the PC version says (as I remember it) that Paul and Fred disappeared for about half a year in order to add insane amounts of dialogue and music to the game. Could it be that the screenshot I linked to reflects SC2 before that monumental overhaul? I seem to recall that Accolade wanted to release the game at quite an early stage of development.

It would be nice to hear about how SC2 was developed; early ideas and prototypes, finding artists and musicians (does anyone have any details on that music competition?), publisher relations and so on. Now, I don't expect Fred to write a 200 page novel about "The Making of Star Control 2" (although I'd certainly like that!). However, I'd appreciate a few answers to specific questions, such as "Did the plot for SC2 change during the development of the game, and if so, how?".

The marketing team probably got the box and all the marketing material ready way before the game was finished,

Another difference is the reply under the highlighted one -

Would you consider an alliance with Earth and Melnrome forces against the Druuge?

maybe Fred Ford and Paul Reiche were considering different
story lines? or they just didn't get the proper budget for the whole thing...
