PC vs 3DO (help a newbie out)
« on: August 03, 2003, 12:53:13 am »

I've never played this game before, and I want to play it as close to the original PC version as possible.  I want to know what I shouldn't install.  I'm not installing the voice, but what about the 3DO music?  If I don't install that, does that mean there will be NO music, or that the original PC game music will there in place of the 3DO music?  Or does it matter?  Did the 3DO music replace any of the original music, or was it extra?  If it was merely extra, do you think it's a nice enough addition to the gamre that it's worth getting, or should I just not bother?

You can install everything (it will be much easier to do so).

In the command, select all the game-content options to be PC (these are listed in the manual.txt file in the download).
Set voice volume to 0.

I may be forgetting something, but that will basically do the job.

(See DEFIANT's post for the exact options you must use to do this)

-T           (or --speechvol)

Set speech volume (0-100). If set to 0, game runs in 'no speech' mode and
oscilloscope reacts to the music.
[set this to zero(0)]

-m pc        (or --pcmusic)

Use the .MOD based PC soundtrack everywhere.
[use this for pc music]

--cscan pc

Use PC style planet information when scanning (text).
[pc text instead of symbols]

     --menu pc

Use PC style menus (text).
[self explanatory]

--font pc

Use PC style fonts and colors.
Default.
[self explanatory]

--scroll pc
Scroll voice-over/subtitles 1 page at a time when using left/right arrow keys
Default.[same]

there you go, enjoy

I want my titles of "crew" and "batt" back on the ship panels in melee.  Those little pictures of a person and lightning bolt just don't rate high on my nostagia-meter.   Tongue

I wrote a patch to do this a few months back, it's in Bugzilla; but they're holding off until they have the new resource system and can use screen shots from the PC as it doesn't look 100% identical (but it's really close)..

If you're wanting to be extra-bleeding-edge, you can apply the patch and build your own super-custom version, else you can wait for the "official" builds to contain the fix..
