In Super Melee, has anyone ever battled Earthling Cruiser versus Earthling Cruiser? It is one of the few battles involving two of the same kind of ship that's actually quite fun and doesn't always leave both participants heavily damaged. Earthling-Earthling strategy is interesting. One must make a balance between using fuel and precious time launching more missiles or deflecting those of your adversary. "Mutually Assured Destruction" takes on a whole new meaning.
The only other such match-up that is more entertaining is AI Ilwrath against Ilwrath, yet it lacks the sophistication of cruiser vs. cruiser warfare. With both their Cloaks Of Darkness engaged, they just approach and open fire on each other.

The very few times I've done mellee online I've seen the strategy being launch of two nukes in different angles, so that they approach the enemy close, but not together, thus not giving the PDL two targets OR time to recharge for second discharge. When playing hotseat with my friends, usually the tactic is trying to get the other player to discharge PDL on asteroid right before the nuke arrives. I actually like the Cruiser vs. Cruiser matches (not against AI, that's just quick and boring)
Earthling vs Earthling is a match which I dislike quite strongly. The problem is that the best strategy is to wait for an asteroid to float near your opponent, then firing a nuke so that he zaps the asteroid a moment earlier instead of your nuke. Using asteroids / the planet is pretty much the only method to get damage in without taking some back yourself, which makes the match highly based on luck. I usually simply decide to not play that sort of game with the other player and rush towards the opponent into a hasty and dirty point-blank range zap-nuke -battle.
If there is a cool mirror, then it is the Druuge mirror. That can get a bit boring if none of the players refuses to use some ammo for recoil, but usually is somewhat interesting and exciting. Occasionally we see Kohr-Ah mirrors too, and those rarely leave a bad taste to your mouth. Slylandro mirror is an example of a stupid mirror, among the vast number of other bad mirrors.
