Quote
I have no clue how to and no one care (god know how many times I have posted help calls).

It's not that we don't care... it's that we don't like to hear DEMANDS (which is how you phrased it) rather than requests ("You have to give me the file NOW" -> "would you send me the file?") for files which are readily accessible from a public forum for which instructions are given (...read the technical issues FAQ...). Also, you were giving very little information.
ALSO, you were looking at help people gave you (e.g. the Starcon.key replacement to which Sage linked) and saying it was no use, then going on and asking for exactly what they gave you.
Now... it is so that there was little explanation as to how to use this information (since the link was to a post in which this information was assumed). If you had instead of saying, "thanks a lot, luser -- at least you tried" had said, "Excuse me, how do I use that information/ would you clarify/ where do I put that file", then you might have had your problem solved some time ago.

NOW! Down to brass tacks:
The Starcon.key file is the default file for keys.cfg. When UQM starts up, if it can't find a keys.cfg in the '.uqm' directory (which is hidden) in your home directory, then it will copy the Starcon.key file into that location. The Starcon.key file is kept in the uqm content directory. If you can't find that directory, take an aspirin and call me in the morning (or post here immediately)

Note that the Starcon.key file can suffer from line ending encoding problems. This being because each of the major systems encodes line endings in a different way --
Unix: <line-feed>
Windows: <carriage return><line-feed>
Mac: <carriage return>
My Starcon.key file did not work until I converted it into unix line endings from mac line endings (which I just thought of doing yesterday).
I do not know if this will be an issue for you, but it could. If the Starcon.key file you copy off of Sage's post does not work, it could be that - and within the restrictions of a GUI OS, I am not sure what can be done to fix it. Furthermore, if you try to FTP in a file, some ftp programs change the line endings to be native to your system, which I am pretty sure you don't want.

Wow, you made me look like the bad guy... I have never said loser and I always (or almost always) asked nicely. When you ask for help it is ok, but when I ask people get mad and start a war against me. Strange huh?

I don't think there are good and bad guys in this case -- just confused frustrated people.

let's see how this happened.
In the days leading up to this mess, you gave off a real aura of "I am right and the rest of you are wrong" with such posts as
"Spathi=coward life being

End of story. No black sqaurden. "

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! DON"T DO IT!!!! Don't repeat sc3 mistakes please. Leave the planet as it is now. I repeat. Do not repeat sc3 mistakes."

"... Oh now I get it!!! This was a joke right? Where is the real file? "

then you evoked confusion as to the problem with your post
"... Btw: Could someone send me the file uqm.exe, I accidently erased it... I thought that if I will erase the uqm2.exe file the uqm_frenzy.exe file will work. But oh well... (Damn cow mouse) Groz_F@hotmail.com "

When I suggested that you download the uqm installer to get yourself going, you said,
"What do you want from me?" indicating your confusion.

Of course, your situation WAS confusing because pretty soon there were two extant errors: your deletion of uqm and the keys.cfg problem. We all thought we had told you what you needed to know in order to fix your problem, so when you demanded a solution, we got confused about what your problem was. Especially when you asked for things that do not exist:
"Where can I download the patch for 0.24v?"
(there is no patch -- instead, you can update the content and get Striker's 0.24 build - Read The Frequently Asked Questions!)

Also, you were asking for a personalized solution (email to me) instead of using the web services that were available to all freely.
"Is it so hard to send me 1 file? Instead of downloading the game again? "
These two are actually THE SAME or very close to it. Why do we have an FTP server if we are going to end up doing the job ourselves?

In the process, you asked many questions that could have been answered in the FAQ -- and when the FAQ confused you, you did not ask for clarification, but instead said it didn't answer your question. Well, this is technically true in that you did not figure out the answer, but the answer WAS there -- you just needed help in decoding it. This is rather different from the point of view of someone trying to help you.

Meanwhile, you were getting rather heated:
"So since YOU created this mod YOU should solve problem like this one. Don't help if you don't want to. But then again, for who you are doing this? "

This is compounded with the question of what your problem was. The problem I was mainly thinking of was your accidental deletion of UQM. Brent can hardly be blamed for that; and the other problem... well, that was a hard one. I am still not sure what is wrong, but I do know how to fix it (get the file Sage posted).

and also evoking anger:
"See? I am not the only one with the problem. So you MUST solve it now."
(and that was posting that in a thread which had specifically been declared, "NOT TECH SUPPORT": melee ideas for frenzy)

That was the post that really got me annoyed -- free games are not a right.

SO... it was a confusing situation made worse by communication errors on both sides, some errors in judgement on both sides, and high expectations on both sides, and some inexperience in getting technical assistance on your side.

Tips for the future: if you have a technical help problem that is new,
1) read the FAQ.
2) If that doesn't solve the problem, post a new topic in technical issues rather than spreading your problem out over many topics in general discussion.
3) If you can't decipher the FAQ, note that if it's in there you can't understand. Then people won't tell you to read the bloody FAQ -- they'll clarify instead.
4) When asking for help, make sure that you're not asking for something that you can't do on your own.
5) Don't say you've searched everywhere on the site unless you have.

For the rest of us:
1) if someone asks for help and it seems that someone has already answered it, it should be apparent that the help has not been received, even if it was given. So ask, "Clarify the problem -- and why did that solution not work" rather than blaming the person with the problem.
2) suggest that the user follow the guidelines above if they are not being followed.
... I guess that's it.

I was in this as much as anyone... sorry.

I'm not sure where you get "half now, half another day" from...

Death's message was posted on 08/29/03 at 4:42pm.
It was last modified on 08/29/03 at 4:51pm.

So Death likely posted, reread it, and noticed either a glaring error or something that needed clarification, and fixed it. I do that a lot myself (as evidenced by this very post).
