having problems with new version .03
« on: September 10, 2003, 10:24:39 am »

what do i need to do to get this working? i install ver .01, then i download graphics/sound libs, start menu shortcuts, desktop icons, and ver .03 content files. i then place the zipped ver. .03 content in the packages file in c:\program files\the ur-quan masters\content\packages. now i run the .exe and it says i need to replace keys.cfg to keys.old, so i do and the game crashes. now i tried a different approach, i uninstalled ver .02 and re did everthing i stated above and still get the same problem. so i tried yet another approach. i erased everthing in the content file and let the zipped ver .03 exract itself there and the ran the .exe and it worked... or so i thought. it runs ever so SLOW in between menus. it takes forever from transitions into and out of conversations. so is this how its supposed to be? i thought the game was supposed to reconize the downloaded zipped ver .03 in the packages dir and work from there? what am i doing wrong? do i need to download the complete ver .03? do i not install any ver before .03? i need some step by steps if some ones got the time. HELP! MAYDAY! RED ALERT! SHIELDS UP! am i missing something some where? i thought i looked around throughly? well if some one could help i'd be very thankful...

Okay, first you need to take ten or so deep breaths.  Panicking and flailing about never solves anything on a computer, and very very frequently makes it lots worse.

That said, there are various avenues you can attempt, maybe.  It's hard to tell what your current situation is...

You need to not install versions before 0.3, because it's different software.  In particular, nothing pre-0.3 can read the content packages.

How fast is your system?  There is a tiny little performance penalty for dealing with zip files, but it is -- literally -- the same code everyone else on Earth uses to unzip stuff with.  The cost is negligible.

Keep your content zips around if they're for 0.3, wipe everything out, reinstall (not installing the content, since it will try to redownload it), then copy the content zips into the packages dir.

Actually, for files that compress well (most of the files; the .ogg files aren't compressed), there can be a performance _gain_, as disk access is then more expensive than decompression.

ok. sorry about that. it is, after all, one of my favorite games. but point noted.

i erased everthing in my ur-quan masters file and used the .03 installer to install the executable only option. then i placed my newly downloaded data, music, and voice zips in the packages and BINGO it worked. without the slowdown. yhea!
it seems that the slowdown was coming from a confict with the old version that i failed to erase before. but anyways, problem solved and yes... im very thankful Michael Martin. and you too meep-eep. your help has saved yet another fan to computer unfriendlyness... Wink
SWEET! IT WORKS!

Greetings to all in the Forum!

(My first post will of course have to be a "I can't get it to work
" question..)

---  Regarding the above issue,  I've just freshly downloaded and installed UQM for the first time tonight, and am experiencing the exactly described slowdowns.      The game will simply pause/freeze every few seconds (for a few seconds).  Needless to say it detracts from the gaming experience! Smiley

I was hoping that getting it to run in a fullscreen mode would speed things up, but I can't quite manage that, either.

I'm running XP and have a machine I would consider fast for most things Smiley

I've reproduced similar behaviour (but less severe, the pauses are something like 200-500ms iirc) on my brother's pII-300mhz machine. It might be a new bug introduced somewhere late v0.2x development as I don't remember seeing it around July or so. I suggest you report it to our bug database.

I would certainly do that, althought now I can't get the game to reproduce the slowdows!    not that I'm complaining.... Smiley

Could it be that you tried the game right after installation?
My theory is that Windows cached the writes that the installation did, and only a little bit later (while you were running the game), performed the actual writes.

If this is the case, maybe we should force Windows to flush its cache before the installer ends.
