Topic: v 3 not working.... (Read 5807 times)

I just downloaded the newest version of UQM v 3, and and after installing I click the shortcut. The program looks like it's beginning to work (screen goes black, the little mini-window comes up), and then 2 seconds later I'm back to desktop without anything running at all. I uninstalled v 2 before installing v3, as per the install instructions. So please, if anyone has any idea why it's doing this let me know so I can make it happen.
If it helps.... I'm running an AMD Athlon 1.7 Ghz processor, NVIDIA GEForce 2, 512 M RAM, on Win XP. Version 2 worked great and never gave me any problems, save that for some reason none of the command line options seemed to work, which I was kinda hoping would work with this version for me.
Again, any help is appreciated

You can give yourself a better idea of the problem by running the game in a command window. Type "cmd" without the quotes in the Start Menu -> Run box. Then type cd\Program Files\The Ur-Quan Masters (assuming you installed it there) and then type uqm. Any error messages will stay on the screen that way.

I did as you asked, and here's what I've got for ya....

I didn't understand a single line in your configuration file. This is likely because you're still using a 0.2 era or earlier keys.cfg.
The control scheme for UQM has changed since you last updated keys.cfg. (I'm using control scheme version 1, while your config file appears to be for version 0.)
Renaming keys.cfg to keys.old and retrying. Copying default key config file to user config dir. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I uninstalled the old UQM to make way for this one...why is this an issue? And what's the best way to make it work/fix it?

same problem i was having. heres what i did:
first off put everthing .03 off to side some where like your desk top. data zip, voice zip, music zip. ok next:
erase everthing in your "the ur-quan masters" file. c:\program files\the ur-quan masters\
now run the installer but only select executable only option. send it to: c:\program files\the ur-quan masters\ you with me so far...
now open up C:\Program Files\The Ur-Quan Masters\content\packages carefully place thoes zip data, voice, music files here.
now exit everthing, go to you shortcut, or whatever you use to run the game and ... so did that do it? dont be hesitent to ask questions. ill be around and so will others that are far more gifted than i.

That didn't work for me I'm also encountering the same problem. Does Urquan-Masters have a registry key that it does not remove from .02 when you unistall in xp. That may be the problem.

NM I did what the post said and it worked. What I found was that the unistaller does not remove the content directory for some reason. I deleted the content directory manually and just did an "exe only" install and copied my content zips back to the content directory and it worked.
Just wish i could get my gravis gamepad to work with urquan masters.
TY for all the help guys.

Is your gamepad plugged in and registered with Windows? I'm pretty sure SDL forwards to DirectInput calls, so once you can make XP detect the joystick at all, setting up the new keys.cfg to work with the gamepad should be pretty straightforward. (I use a Playstation 1 Dual Shock hooked up to a USB port, and it works great.)

Back up "content" and all subdirectories thereof.

So, which one of you is the Fot?

Though I'm not doubting your word, it appears my content dir is only about 20MB. Yet, I recall the voices file was very large, 100+ MB. I'm not sure, the files may have been deleted at some point though.
Ah, and if it is of any importance, the size of my "The Ur-Quan Masters" directory is 158 MB, 350 MB on disk. Or so says Windows XP...

This could be part of the problem, if the content packs are misplaced. It sounds like only the base content is there, though. Find your "uqm-0.3-*.zip" files and make sure all of them are in content/packages. A full install will have three such files; content, 3domusic, and voice. Check your recycle bin, too, in case you deleted them by accident.
