The Sa-matra wasn't on full power?
Are you totally sure about it? (can I see a quote, I once checked and found no proof of that).

What you were fighting wasn't the Sa-matra itself, but the defenses attached to the outside of the asteroid shell.
Consider: after you have destroyed the shields, the weapons stop regenerating. But you have not yet hit the Sa-Matra itself.

With evidence like that, I don't care about quotes...

Also, if the Sa-Matra were to attack a fleet of Broodhomes with those fireballs, it wouldn't work very well - the fireballs would take a long time to get to the ships in question, and they could then dispell them with a cloud of crystal shards. At close range, it could be a different story due to the rapid replenishment of the fireballs.

Hey -- is it possible to hack a save file to give the player arbitrary ships, such as Broodhomes, X-forms, etc?

I am curious as to how certain ships would fare against the Sa-Matra. For instance:
Ilwrath (close range which is bad, but invisibility might make the defenses unable to latch on, and it does a lot of damage)
Kohr-Ah (FRIED can clear away the defenses, and you're always in range -- no need to get close)
Chenjesu (Similarly long-ranged. Probably don't regenerate quickly enough to neutralize the fireballs AND do damage)
Mmrnmhrm (fast, perhaps enough to avoid the fireballs... could drift by at high speed with the laser, perhaps?)
Androsynth (Probably ineffective, but it depends on the HP of the fireballs -- after all, the acid clouds have a lot of blocking power in them, cumulatively. Also, you might - MIGHT - be able to dodge effectively with the blazer)

I'm not at all curious as to how the Mycon or VUX would do... it would be a complete wash... Same with the Kzer-Za, since the fighters wouldn't lock on properly.

Hmm...
-Would DOGIs prevent the Sa-Matra's shields from launching more fireballs/bouncers?
-Would the Kzer-Za fighters attack the shields?
-Would the Vux limpets make the Sa-Matra slower?  Roll Eyes

You might be able to change what *gift* ships you get at the end (assuming that you solved the civil war).  I haven't even looked at the code for this, so don't take my word for it.

Similarly, you could save the game just before the final battle, then edit the entries for the ships in the save file (via a hex editor), and potentially take in whatever ships the game allows in.
