How is it possible to make 100+ posts and still not know that you can download it for free? Huh

He probably knows you can download it for free, but that doesn't prevent people from selling it in the stores; the GPL allows commercial distribution, and several collections of GPLed programs (e.g. Linux distributions) are available in most software stores.

Selling the final version of UQM actually makes sense. For example, it may be easier to get a deal allowing the distribution of the 3DO videos (which would be nice if we don't produce better ones ourselves) if we pay the copyright holders a small sum for each copy. Obviously, this is not possible in a freely distributed version.

Also, installing from CD is a lot easier than downloading hundreds of megabytes if your Internet collection isn't very fast.

I think you may have just "cracked the code" for how we can get the rights back on the name, videos, etc.:  contact all of the copyright holders and offer them 30% of gross sales if they license use of the copyrighted materials to us.

Since 30% of $0.00 is $0.00, we should have no problems affording it  Smiley

Excellent! Time to write a little shopping list:

  • Rights to use the name "Star Control" and variations (e.g. "Star Control 2 - The Ur-Quan Masters").
  • Distribution rights for the 3DO videos.
  • Distribution rights for the original PC and 3DO versions.
  • Uh... Anything else? Smiley

I'd be happy to pay all of that $0.00 personally, but I'm sure we won't have trouble finding contributors.

Heck, alter the license a little so that it reads: "The distributer may sell UQM for  US -$0.01"  (Yup, that's a negative sign)  Then tell the copyright holders that we'll let them have 100% of the sales.  Why not make them pay the end users?  Roll Eyes
