Well, do you *have* a joystick? AFAIK the Windows version of SDL uses DirectInput to figure out joystick stuff, so if you've got a joystick but DirectInput can't see it, you won't be able to use it with UQM.
If you copy "starcon.key" from from the content zip into the directory above where saves go (c:\program files\the ur-quan masters\userdata\uqm, it would seem), and rename it "keys.cfg", you should be good to go. If not, and you die with "kernel failed to load", then something wacky is happening with the content directories.

sorry about the prior test, apparntly adding "nospam" at the end of an email makes it an invalid Char. damn phorum is too smart for me.
ok, i am having the same problem, but joysticks got shit all to do with it. I had the error: --------------- Saved games are kept in C:/Documents and Settings/in10t/Application Data/uqm/sav e/. Initializing SDL (pure). SDL driver used: directx SDL initialized. Initializing Screen. Set the resolution to: 640x480x32 Initializing SDL audio subsystem. SDL audio subsystem initialized. Initializing MixSDL mixer. MixSDL using driver 'SDL_audio' MixSDL Mixer initialized. opened dsound at 44100 Hz 16 bit stereo, 4096 samples audio buffer Initializing sound decoders. Sound decoders initialized. 0 joysticks were found. Error: Could not copy default key config to user config dir: No such file or directory. ------------------ but then following the good advice of Michael Martin i now have some thing "wacky" happening inthe content dir, dispite the fact that eveyrthing is in place as it should be. (i followed the instructions to the letter many times already)
i now get the error: ------------------- C:\Program Files\The Ur-Quan Masters>uqm The Ur-Quan Masters v0.3 (compiled Sep 5 2003 03:55:46) This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY; for details see the included 'COPYING' file.
Saved games are kept in C:/Documents and Settings/in10t/Application Data/uqm/sav e/. Initializing SDL (pure). SDL driver used: directx SDL initialized. Initializing Screen. Set the resolution to: 640x480x32 Initializing SDL audio subsystem. SDL audio subsystem initialized. Initializing MixSDL mixer. SOME ONE PLEASE HELP ME!!! I dont have much hair to tear out anymore.
