Injection 5: The Precursors
« on: November 13, 2003, 12:49:11 am »

Following the gist of Lukipela, I've decided to inject a bit myself. The question:

What were the Precursors?

Since the general thought of SC3 around here brings about a reaction similar to a VUX looking at a human, I'd like to hear your thoughts on what they were, how they looked, society types, etc. Anything you would imagine the Precursors as.
What other undiscovered types of technology would they have possibly created?
What type of planets would they have inhabited?
Are there MORE Rainbow Worlds?
How did they discover/harness Anti-Matter? (The Vindicator's engines are anti-matter)

Honestly, I kinda like SC3's explanation of the Precursors as cows. But maybe that's just me.

Rainbow Worlds are generally known as being Precursor "dump sites". What they dumped is usually some sort of Antimatter material (This is all SC2, mind you), and the assumption is that the rainbow effect is from the antimatter interacting with something (SC3*cough* said that it was the "shielding" keeping the antimatter from tearing the planet apart).

Spurk: If they really were cows, I wonder what the controls on the Vindi's control systems looked like. Big pressure plates on the floor of the deck?
IMO, I agree that they were large and shaggy, probably biped (a human assumption, no?) and omnivores. That way, if they made something they didn't like, they'd just eat it. Tongue

Never having played SC3 (started it up once, hated it, deleted it), I would go for Yeti's the size of a house. All races seem to concur that the precursors were shaggy and giants, so that fits the description well. Another theory of mine is that they might have been the first sentient race in the SC galaxy. They were the first in walking upright, the first in inventing fire, and the first in inventing space travel. When looking around the stars, they either found:

a. Too primitive cultures
b. cultures who were just discovering space
c. cultures that couldn't explore space (the Slylandro for example)

Why they left? I don't know. Perhaps they had some terribly important business to take care of in another dimension (like paying bills ;-) ). They might have just decided on a "Prime Directive" and went on their merry ways, leaving the 'barbarian' races out on their own.

Rainbow worlds? The Precursors might have been interstellar terraformers/explorers. It reminds me a bit of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, where there is a corperation that makes planets, shiny ones, blue ones, yellow ones, rubber ones, etc. The Precursors might have been able to create planets with their technology as well, and the Rainbow worlds might be a result of their experimenting.

Okay, that's about what I have to type, fire away.

If you talk about sc3, no they weren't the first race to walk and talk, but second. That is why they disappeared. No more sc3 shit. But then again, you mention it for time to time in sc2, but they mean nothing to you. You don't find their devices ( well you do, but the credit is for the race who owns it) and ofcourse several races mention them, even the most wired ones... So I assume you guys talk about sc3, because there they are the story. Correct me if I am wrong.

Why not cows? After all the muppets got pigs in space... ;-)

What can you tell me about the Precursors?
Hell, you probably know more about them than I do, but here goes... about 200,000 years ago
when our great-to-the-nth-grandparents were just starting to play with stone knives and bearskins
a starfaring species suddenly appeared on the galactic scene and spread like wildfire.
We've found evidence of their presence just about everywhere
from an orbital platform in Alpha Centauri, to a stack of DataPlates in a cave on Pluto
to some nameless widget found in a voodoo shop in New Orleans.
Though we've never found a Precursor body, or even a picture of one
we can conjecture what they looked like by examining the scale and layout of their equipment
Such an analysis indicates that they were giants, say 5 to 8 meters tall and twice as wide.
I don't know if they looked more like a brontosaur or an elephant.
Anyway, about three thousand years after the Precursors made their dramatic appearance
they vanished, poof! As far as we can tell, it took less than a decade to happen.

Doesn't sound much like a biped to me;  maybe a quadriped with multiple grasping organs near the head?

Other types of technology?
*Teleportation Diases  ("planetary transformer biot 94-18: take your place at the dais"): perhaps **HYUIVBHJHG**'ing the user to its intented location.
*Quasi-Storage: Storage compartments larger on the inside than on the outside (good ol' D&D bags of holding).
*Galaxy-burners: Copy one galaxy onto another. The newer versions compare the result down to the quarks.
*Snapple: a refreshing fruit flavored beverage.
