Bittorrent
« on: November 23, 2003, 08:37:11 am »

this is just a idea but i believe it would be great if the game was downloadable in bittorrent form.

few reasons:
1. in theory the downloads will be faster.
2. poeple can help the project by seeding the file.

if you have no idea what i am talking about check this site out:

what do you guys think?

Atleast 0.2 is/was downloadable. So maybe 0.3 is too. Search?

the setup's size is big, about 100 mb, seems pointless when it's aviable as direct download on sourceforge .

Bittorrent is really only useful when the ALL of following conditions are met:
  • The file(s) in question are very large
  • There are a large amount of simultaneous requests for the files
  • The host site has limited bandwidth
In the case of UQM, we're 0 for 3.  The first part is somewhat debatable, as 150MB on a broadband connection isn't too punitive, we're not even close to achieving the second (as much as I may wish it were otherwise); and SourceForge has mirrors all over the world, so the third isn't an issue, either.

Not that BitTorrent isn't a really cool technology, it just doesn't provide a measurable improvement over what we already have in this particular situation.
