Several bug-cheats that we know and love from the PC days are being corrected. I don't think intentional-internal cheats will be implemented.

There's all kinds of cheats. To enable them, compile in debug mode, then run it under gdb, then hit Ctrl-C in the gdb window while playing.
Knowing the names of the variables you want to modify might come in handy, I suppose.

There really isn't much of a reason to cheat. The savegame editor is more than you need to easily beat the game if you are having problems gathering resources and arming your flagship to the teeth.
The only fun thing was modifying the parameters of the other ships with the ship editor. Those programs that did that on the PC version don't seem to work anymore or else UQM ignores the SHP files or something completely different. It would be nice to be able to modify ship properties without recompiling the whole program, like you say, just for fun.

this is kinda off topic, but i used to edit the earthling ship (pc version), that would give it the same thrust, speed, and turnig as a androsyth in regular form. it only seems logical that after the war we would try to match there ship to gain a little advatage. it didnt make a huge differance, but its boost in speed and thrust, gave it the edge it so very needed. well just my thoughts on that.
carry on...
