This is going to seem like a totally clueless question: should I unzip the packages before putting them into <game dir>\content\packages ? And the three files (3domusic, content, voices) all go into <game dir>\content\packages ?
Thanks!

Short answer: No. Just stick them there.
Long answer: Well, you can also unzip them directly into content\ (NOT content\packages) but this will cause them to override anything in the zips, including any addon packs. You should do that if you only want to use some of an addon pack, but you want to do that all the time.

Thanks!
Just so to be clear, we are talking about the three Content packages,
This is what the download pages says, "you need to get the zips yourself and put them to content\packages\ directory under the dir where you installed UQM, e.g. "C:\Program Files\The Ur-Quan Masters\content\packages\" if you used default location. See "Content" below for links to the packages."
As you can see, no mention of whether to unzip or not. So I'll just put the 3 Content Packages in the Package directory then.
Thanks again.!

No, it doesn't say to unzip them. Therefore you shouldn't.
