An idea I've been kicking around... (SC Novel)
« on: December 16, 2003, 12:06:25 pm »

I've been considering starting work on a novel sized story based in the SC universe.

It's really just in the idea stage ATM, I was just wondering if anybody had any ideas about what it could be about.

Also, if anybody has a link with a very detailed history of events in SC, providing it here would be much appreciated. I want to decide if I could maybe flesh out a specific known story, or fit something of my own in. Ideas on either account are welcomed.

I'm thinking it will be based during the events of SC2. No more information then that right now.

Here is a link to the pages of now and forever star control 2 (aka Ur-quan Masters) - they have some great timelines and  all sorts of things that would come in really handy for you.

http://www.classicgaming.com/starcontrol/scwc/

I think that a novel would be a cool idea  -  it would take a lot of work to make it interesting - but I like the sound of it.

Hoped that helped!

FYI, there was an official novel that fit in between SC2 and SC3. I've heard it was horrible.

Star Control, Interbellum.  Check it out from your local library and burn it.

Since it wasn't a big hit in my country and I am sure in 100% that I wouldn't find it in stores, can you tell me why this book is so horrible?

I fear I read the book, as "research" for that Star Control RPG.  Big mistake.  The Interbellum Rant gets its own page.

So let me get this straight -- since Zelnick is the one major human hero, the platonic essence of "human hero" gathers around him. Then, instead of simply being there passively as any ordinary abstraction would, it instead transforms him PHYSICALLY into the platonic "human hero", having physically observable effects upon him, turning him into various heroes as time progesses?

I remember writting a number of SC2-based short stories when I was in high school. Probably a total of 200 pages of liniar time line in total. The basic idea was that it picks up where SC2 left off (ignoring SC3). The Alliance has been reformed, the Ur-Quan empire is falling and the Kor-Ah are running around like chickens with their heads chopped off.
However, the Ur-quan empire is still strong right after the Sa-Mara is destroyed....

I found such interesting sub-plots to work with such as:
The romance between the human hero and the Syhreen Captain.
The revenge of the Mycon.
The VUX trying to hurt the humans, mostly policatally.
Just what are the Orz doing?
The Druuge, of course, selling war supplies to the highest bidder(s)....enage in a trade war with the Melnorm.

I hope this gives you some ideas to play with. One thing that you might have to tackle early on, IMHO, is "Which races still exist?" Were the Thraddish & Illwrath wiped out, or just hurt a lot? Did the Pkunk survive re-uniting with the Yehat? Will the Spathi come out from under the slave shield?

Good luck on the novel!

"Check it out from your local library and burn it," as they said upthread.  But I don't condone vandalism, and you'd end up having to actually pay money as a result, so it's not really a wise move.  Besides, the fumes are probably hazardous.

You can do 3 parts novel:
First part- The mission to Ulzert(forgot the plant's name) when the war is in the background.
Second part- The life on the planet and the born of the captian.
Third and final part - The jounary to build a new alliance and stoping the ur-quan.

Chrispy, that's actually the only idea I have some up with so far, as far as a story goes.

I actually want to avoid just retelling the SC2 story, since frankly it was done so well with the game itself.

Is anything known about what happened on the planet, other then finding the facility to build the flagship?

My main concern on doing a story about the planet, is that it might not have a Star Control feel to it since you won't be leaving the planet visiting other races and such.

Novel of the Androsynth Revolution how about it? I'd make some sacrifices to read a good novel of that. The current info isn't enough.  Roll Eyes
