I'm years behind of today's games  I mean I'm play Baldur's gate 2 at the moment among others - like UQM *grin*
My top games would be (not in any order, can't just pick the number 1)
Might & Magic 6
Monkey Island 1 & 2
Discworld 1
Simon the sorcerer
Heroes of the might and magic 1,2,3 (3 expansion on-going)
baldur's gate 1 + expansion
BG 2 (on-going)
IWD 1 + exp
SC2 (on-going as UQM)
Neverwinter nights (on-going)
Arcanum
See? all RP or adventure games (or both)
I think that at the moment flight simulation-games are pop and quite good ones too (IL-stumovik and such) - at least what I have noticed, though, I my self do not play 'em.

System Shock was better than its sequal IM(ns)HO. There was far too much nanite management in SS2, but the game engine of SS2 beats its predecessor.
They're not freeware, but here's the jist:
System Shock started with you (a hacker) tampering with a space-station's AI, removing all ethical constraints so that the head of te station could embezzle funds. SHODAN, the AI, had other ideas. While you were in a healing coma from the military-grade cyber implants you recieved for your reward, SHODAN re-examined its purpose - without the ethical constraints. SHODAN decided that to increase the quality of human life, it should mold humanity in its own image: cyborgs, bezerk robots, and hideous mutations abound on the station by the time you wake up. It was the first FPS that had a real plot & puzzles. It also had a trully 3D engine; you could go under things (unlike the psuedo-3D maps that Doom used).
In SS2, the faster than light ship(s) find a planet with life; but first contact isn't kind to the humans. Nor is it really first contact... It's still very modern looking graphics, and it's probably being sold for $15 US or less. I doubt SS is being sold anywhere. If you do buy SS2, make sure to find a basketball when you're out in the city streets and take it with you all the way to the ship(s); it's a fun little easter egg.
Ah, almost forgot about One Must Fall. It's a good example of both A) a fighting game done well on a PC and B) a fighting game with original ideas (even though its an old game; break out your moslo for this one).

Sorry for the double-post but, I just bought System shock. (for 1$) I love yard sales!!!  Only problem is that I am having trouble getting it to work on windows XP. The intro movie was pretty cool though.

Just got it to work. I had to download 4 things for the video card to work. 3 for the sound to work and 1 for the keyboard input. 3 more for just getting the game to run as well as a upgrade for System shock and a XP patch.

I would have just made a DOS boot disk. Far less trouble (and less chance of a trojan).
When playing it, remember to compare it to its progenitors but not its progeny. It looks awfully old by today's standards (of course if you're an UQM fan, you probably don't care).

Tried that - For some reason it did not accept it. Besides, I have friends who have the same software and they have no trouble.
