another melee music remix
« on: January 04, 2004, 12:36:54 am »

'lo everyone.  I've been a SC2 fan for some time, and I've been following this wonderful project since its inception.

I'm currently working on a remix of the Melee music because I love it so, and also to add some variance to the game.  Right now, I just have a few patterns and its really more of an auditory sketch, but I would like the community's feedback on it and any kudos/suggestions you might have.

This is still just a sketch and while the timing of those really nifty spacey strings you hear is correct, I don't actually plan on having it come into the song that soon.  Anyway, here it is.  Let me know what you think.

It's not a sample, actually.  It's a synthesized bassline.  The only sample the song has at this time is the alarm sound.

What do you mean by "better"?  Please describe so I can work on it.  If you can't really put it into words, perhaps there is another song you've heard with a bassline that you think would fit.  Tell me, and I'll give it a listen and try it out.

I agree with Chrispy and I have another thing to mention: It doesn't sound good in loop. You need to create a track that if it is played in a loop, we won't "notice" it.

Oh definitely.  Like I said, this is a draft.  It's not meant to loop (yet!).

I have tried to add a bit more depth to the main bassline, yet still keeping it simple (as an homage to the original)

See if you like what I've got for you now.

Bassdrum is a bit too booming, drums clip in general (you're mixing those too loud). Alarm is quite quiet and panning bothers me a lot.

About the basslines, the one you start with could use some lowpass filtering, or adjust the cutoff and resonance down. When the other 303 sound comes in, those sounds overlap too much and they get mixed. Doesn't sound that good for my ears. Simple EQ'ing might work well too.

Hihats have quite much flanger. Try simple panned delay too, works nicely to get those wider.

Also missing some pads to give some feeling into it Smiley

Yeah, well, the equalization between the two sounds (bass & 303) is definitely my first concern.  The drums are based off of a 909 machine, which is why the bass is so booming and why the flanger shows up so pronounced.  I'm working on fixing that.

I rather like the panning, but I'll try slowing it down.  I guess the panning would bug me a bit if I were wearing headphones, but the general idea was that it was going to be listened to on pc speakers for the most part.  I'll take a look at it.

The plan is to add pads at some point, but not until I've covered this stuff first.

Good suggestions in general.  Keep them coming.

the background sound that enters at the 28th second doesn't enter right. it sounds wierd...

also dont forget to add the nice few seconds added at the 3do remixed version(starting at the 59th second). =]
